This is a copy paste from a comment I just made but in regard to CATS: The Jellicle Ball:
I’m sorry but i genuinely have to disagree with a lot of the wording and how this is describing Cats: The Jellicle Ball specifically.
Jellicle Ball is about Ballroom culture, something that is prominent in NY among queer POC esp around the time of the AIDs crisis. It is an important artform that is still alive and thriving that tbh the general public wouldn’t understand, much less how Voguing competitions are run.
Cats the Jellicle Ball may not be a production that the average Cats fan will enjoy if they go in with the expectation of this being another “Cats in x location or theme”.
It’s a non rep. Like all non reps it’s not gonna be exactly like the source material.
Is it more digestible for people who don’t like Cats? Story-wise, yes. It’s more UNDERSTANDABLE when put into this setting and in the context of ballroom culture.
Someone being taken into a house after tension and conflict and performances from members of the house sounds similar to other media with Voguing as its focus ( Ex: POSE or even Paris is Burning)
It doesn’t mean that the production is suddenly this heteronormative, more “normal” showcase of song and dance, but instead transforms into a celebration of a subculture with a long standing history in a way that people can enjoy both that and Cats itself.
I say all of this as someone who isn’t entirely fond of this production but can understand its context and what it is showcasing and doing to the material.
sorry

i didn’t like victoria when i was 14 as i was fresh out of a childhood of ostracisation from pretty popular mean girls and i dismissed her as such an archetype which in hindsight is very funny cus she’s just a kitty cat and her one character trait in the show is that she’s nicer and more empathetic and openminded than everyone else
been obsessed about cats actors with comically oversized object props
