I just realized the added layer of tragedy of Maisie being a orphan inside of a orphanage funded by the King and Queen who probably sent half of those kids parents to die "a great death" leaving them alone.

The Sea Beast saying poc can be in historical fantasy for no reason. Just inherently a part of the world is something I needed so badly as a young indigenous girl. That I could be a swashbuckler without guilt. Or without having random assholes tell me "um actually" or that any self indulgent work was pandering mary sue things

didn't expect the cute sea monsters animated film to go so hard for "imperialism sustains itself through violence, exploitation, and monopolistic revisionist history" so that was a nice surprise

I love you How to Train Your Dragon. I love you The Sea Beast. I love you “everything we know about you is wrong”. I love you “you can be a hero and still be wrong”. I love you children questioning generations of propaganda. I love you adorable yet dangerous creature winning over a child with an act of kindness in the midst of a war. I love you children ending your parents wars through an unlikely friendship. I love you children teaching your community to chose forgiveness and peace. I love you power of friendship overcoming generations of hate.

little inconsequential details i like about The Sea Beast:

only the royalty speak “proper English”. everybody else, and notably the main characters, speak with accents that are usually considered “poor” /“improper”/ or “stupid”

Maisie’s hair when it gets wet looks like how real natural curls do when they get wet

all the actual ship lingo. like audiences don’t have to understand it to still get the gist!

Maisie getting to have a black woman (Sarah Sharpe) to look up to as a role model

all the gender ambiguous/butch characters populating the world

The Sea Beast has shown me that we don't have enough How to train your Dragon esk movies/series and honestly it's a crime. Give me more "younger generation realize that the 'monsters' they were thaught to hate arnt actually monsters, and then go out of their way to prove it."

The Sea Beast is full of women characters, none that are reduced to be "the woman" pirate/sailor, the only woman in the gang (smurfette) or romantic tropes.

Normally these type of stories are composed of entirely male ensembles, but just look at this group shot where you can see how diverse the characters are. They all look different and unique, from design to voice acting.

Even small roles like the lady driving the carriage - these minor characters that are always male, or the person serving drinks being a man (yes I noticed it people who made this movie!! I see what you did there).

Great movie, can't wait to watch it again today

Cant stop thinking about that line from The Sea Beast that Maisie says:

"I have every right to speak! I come from a long line on Hunters, that died your great death. Your Kingdom was paid for with their blood! And their blood"

The clear message of the effects of nationalism and imperialism can have on the people, the land, and their history how it can quickly take over and use its lower class citizens as pawns for their dirty work.

How Maisie changes from seeing her parents as great war heros to victims to the crown as so many others were human and sea beast alike.
