If a leadership figure (or anyone, honestly) calls for unity in one breath and then calls out a member of a group they are not a part of for being a "problem," they are not actually calling for unity.

Look at what your political and spiritual leaders are saying after they make the socially required call for peace.

If yesterday they begged for unity and today they are referring to members of another political party, ethnicity, or religion as especially violent or problematic, ask yourself why they want you to not to trust that group. Ask THEM why. Because with those words, They are not actually calling for peace.

Make them explain themselves.

ok i’m going to explain the kuleshov effect because im a film student and its fascinating to me. basically its the principle of film storytelling that states that you can juxtapose a blank expression with an image and the audience will read a different emotion from the expression depending on the juxtaposed image. its incredibly interesting to me.

It doesn't "describe why people don't help each other".

It describes a genuinely harmful and reductive behaviour in which people start becoming the wardens of their own prisons as a trauma response, thus transmitting that trauma to others. Of course crabs don't naturally come in buckets; it's not describing natural human behaviour.

Example: patriarchal mores demand that a woman be subservient, quiet and houseproud to be successful, or she'll end up on the streets. A woman internalises this, and insists her daughters therefore meet these same standards. When the next door neighbour chooses to have a job instead of staying home with her husband, the woman judges her harshly, because how dare she! Doesn't she know that's not how you Woman successfully? Doesn't she know she's shaming other women by comparison? She should be shunned as Wrong. When her daughters grow and say they want jobs too, the woman punishes them, and eventually disowns them as Bad Women who bring her shame.

The fact that this shitty behaviour is ultimately triggered by patriarchy does not make this woman less of a cunt to her neighbours and daughters. It is important to name and critique this phenomenon. Crab bucket mentality is an excellent metaphor for it.

yeah sure, so slope intercept form (sometimes called “a linear equation”) is simply [y = mx + b], and it is basically just one way of mathematically condensing all the information you need to generate an infinitely-long straight line

y and x represent the y and x axes of the graph, and aren’t ever going to change, really. you could do [x = my + b], too, but no one really does that because it just overcomplicates things. so, for the most part, just ignore x and y. they’re just variables.

m indicates the slope, or steepness, of the line. so if m is 3, then for every 1 unit you move right (x-ward) you’d also move 3 units up (y-ward). larger m values indicate steeper lines. a negative m value indicates the line slopes downwards to the right

b is the y-intercept: where your line intersects with [x = 0]. this basically just shifts the entire line up or down on the y-axis, which is necessary for figuring out where the line actually is in 2d space

get some graph paper and a ruler and practice making some lines using this formula, changing the m and b values to whatever you like. you should be able to grasp it pretty quickly with this hands-on approach. good luck in your studies!

i like working at plant store. sometimes you ring up someone and there's a slug on their plant and so you're like "Oh haha you've got a friend there let me get that for you" and you put the slug on your hand for safekeeping but then its really busy and you dont have time to take the slug outside before the next customer in line so you just have a slug chilling on your hand for 15 minutes. really makes you feel at peace with nature. also it means sometimes i get to say my favorite line which is "would you like this free slug with your purchase"
