The Signs in the Practice Room

Aries: Tearing up sheet music, bending over stands, screaming in sheer frustration

Taurus: Staring longingly out the window

Gemini: On their phone, texting their friends: OMG I am SOoOOooOo BUSY  PRACTICING! I GTG b/c I am SUCH a GOOD MUSICIAN!!!!

Cancer: eating food 

Leo: just sits there because….ego

Virgo: *Breaks instrument in half*

Capricorn: They wouldn’t even be in the practice rooms to begin with 

Sagittarius: SCREAMING FOR SEVEN HOURS STRAIGHT

Dear music majors,

Sometimes, you’re going to have Days. Your Days are going to suck. You’re going to feel inadequate. Maybe it’s ear training, or that sixteenth note run you just can’t get up to tempo, or that skip to a note barely in your range that you keep missing. You’re going to have Days and you’re going to want to quit and you’re going to want to give up and change your major and just not have to deal with this anymore because it’s grueling and it sucks, it just SUCKS.

You’re going to have those Days.

I want you to know that, despite those Days, you’re going to have better days too. Intervals are going to click for you. You’re going to nail that run. Chords are going to finally make sense, they’ll finally start sounding different. You’re going to have fantastic days.

The horrible Days and the days that are just kind of “meh” are pretty numerous, and the great days might feel fewer and further between than they actually are, but the great days make the meh and the Days so, so worth it.

Stick to your major. It’s a hard one. You picked a major where you’re going to suffer and no one but you and your profs will recognize you for your suffering. That’s the nature of music. That’s it. But it’s so, so worthwhile. You’re doing what you love. You picked this major for a reason. Remember what it was, refocus, and get to work.
