On Deedee Magno Hall being possibly MAGA: I hate being one of those guys who was like "she was always sus and had bad vibes!" because that kind of thinking can become very dangerous and lead to wrongful accusations and hubris when dealing with public figures, BUT I have to admit with how staunchly and openly religious she was and the kind of demeanour she gave, I am sadly not as shocked as I feel I should be (given she played one of the gayest cartoon characters to ever gay).
I always gave her the benefit of the doubt because I'd be shocked that someone like that would even work on SU, it's not even like Nicki Minaj going MAGA given that she did a voice only once and only when before the show got really popular.
While I don't want to be definitive, I do feel there's a trend with many people becoming more openly conservative and reactionary with the success of the MAGA movement, so I'm guessing if Deedee always had those beliefs, she feels more confident to express them because of this.
And if she didn't, then this massive reactionary Christian nationalist movement probably seduced her with the appeal to her faith. I don't know, and probably shouldn't fixate on what is actually going on. But I do think this is emblematic of conservative people feeling bolder now.
Also, if our fears are indeed true, this is ironic not just because of how freaking gay Pearl is, but also because her story is literally about how her reactionary programming still affects her and causes problems even as she was free from the regressive slave role she came from.
Anyway... again, very disappointed if this is true, even if I'm regrettably less surprised than I should be. I wonder how this is going to affect Lars of the Stars, since I'm sure Pearls are going to appear there (one of the off-colours has a Pearl in her fusion for example).
Su fans are surprised on how could a voice actor who work on a progressive show be MAGA. It because they don’t acknowledge their own issues in the fandom. As long as there’s lgbt representation it all good. But they don’t care if the show is antiblack, albeist, or misogynistic.
Hey guys, remember that episode where Pearl mopes about not being "strong enough" in Steven's eyes because he was too busy in awe of Sugilite's power, and the episode ends with her, the delicate, feminine and graceful white-coded woman subduing the boisterous, destructive and beastly black-coded woman Sugilite, who was the fusion of two black-coded women, that had a very sexualized fusion dance, and whose black voice actress was never properly paid for her performance?
Apparently the voice actress for Pearl in Steven Universe is possibly right wing (she follows Charlie Kirk's account, though that could honestly mean anything), and a lot of people are like, "How could she be right wing when she worked on STEVEN UNIVERSE?" and like.
Beyond just having a basic understanding of how jobs work (which should be enough to make this question silly/irrelevant), I think it's time we all finally accept that Steven Universe--beyond its pro-queer stance--was not particularly progressive in its messaging.
I know this is a hot take because people love to pretend one of the most successful children's shows of all time is somehow the most put upon piece of media in existence because someone they don't like made a YouTube video criticizing it, but like. Can we actually honestly address some of the issues and flaws with the series? Can we accept that maybe a show that had some spectacular aspects to it seriously fell short in other ways? Can we do this without people either saying, "it's a show for kids so what did you expect," or pretending that anyone who does criticize it is dogheaded and wants all media to be perfect and cozy?
Can we--and I can't believe I have to ask for something this basic--actually engage in honest, critical media analysis of the show for once? For all that people get defensive whenever someone talks about this show in a less-than-positive way, I actually think it's more insulting to not treat the show as a serious work of art that can be analyzed (and thus criticized) as such. Sugar has even said that they wanted the show to provoke deep discussion, and this immediate refusal to shut down any conversation about it because you don't like what people might say is contrary to those aims.
