Problematic because: "he’s a recovering alcoholic who breaks sobriety once the crew discovers the cargo is just mouthwash, then spends more and more time drunk while everyone is already starving, injured, panicking, and trapped on a dying ship. he gets volatile with the axe, damages the ship’s screen/window area, refuses jimmy and daisuke access to utility while anya is locked in medical and her and curly's lives are at risk, and lashes out at daisuke even though daisuke is the one person he seems to be trying, in his messed-up way, to protect. jimmy manipulates daisuke into crawling through the damaged vent, daisuke is horribly injured, and jimmy makes it worse by using mouthwash on the wounds after the disinfectant is gone. swansea realises daisuke isn’t going to survive and kills him with the axe as a mercy killing. that’s not the same as murder in the usual sense, and jimmy is much more to blame for the situation, but swansea is still the one who has to do it. he might be the only adult on the ship who sees jimmy clearly by the end, but he’s also bitter, drunk, verbally cruel, secretive, and far too late."
Propaganda: 1. "swansea is awful old man representation. drunk mechanic, mean to the intern he’s secretly trying to save, axe privileges revoked, somehow one of the only people on the ship with any accurate read on jimmy. horrible bedside manner."
2. "The Daisuke stuff is arrrgghh. Swansea is horrible to him. He snaps at him, talks down to him, makes Daisuke feel useless, and then by the end you realise he may have been saving the cryopod for him anyway. He cares, but he can’t make that care kind while it still matters. The only clear act of mercy he gives Daisuke is also the worst thing he ever has to do. He’s a bitter, damaged man whose love comes out late, badly, and with an axe in his hands."
3. "He’s such a good character because he looks like the obvious useless drunk at first. The guy blocking access, yelling at Daisuke, drinking the mouthwash, making things harder while everyone else is trying to survive. And he IS making things harder. He’s not secretly blameless just because Jimmy is worse. But then the late-game material reframes him without turning him into a saint. Swansea sees through Jimmy’s cowardice. He understands that Daisuke is the one person left with any real future worth saving. He knows the cryopod matters. He knows the crew is done. And when Daisuke is dying, Swansea is the one who does the awful thing nobody else can make clean. He’s not sweet. He’s not pleasant. He’s not even always useful. He’s just heartbreakingly human in this ugly, blunt way - a man who failed at gentleness, failed at sobriety, failed at saying what he meant, but didn’t fail to notice who deserved to live."
Problematic because: "He starts as one of Gotham’s more obvious child victims - his father Gerald kidnaps people, harvests their adrenal glands for fear-serum experiments, then overdoses Jonathan with the toxin and leaves him trapped in constant hallucinations of a monstrous scarecrow. After Arkham, he’s abused again when Warden Reed sells him to criminals who force him to remake the toxin. But once Jonathan becomes Scarecrow, he starts spreading that trauma outward. He gases Grady, goes back to Arkham to dose Reed and the inmates, tries to make Gordon kill himself through fear hallucinations, helps Jerome and Tetch break out of Arkham, releases dozens of inmates, helps modify toxin for Jerome’s citywide chaos plans, and later allies with Jeremiah during the No Man’s Land mess."
Propaganda: 1. "Scarecrow is one of those characters I wish Gotham had used even more, because his setup is genuinely strong. His father’s fear experiments are already horrific, and then the show brings him back older, worse, and fully committed to the idea that fear is not something to overcome in a healthy way, but something to become. That is such a good Gotham villain premise. He’s also useful - Jerome needs chaos? Crane has the toxin. Arkham needs to get worse? Crane can make that happen. Jeremiah needs another monster in the room? Crane fits right in. He’s not the loudest villain in the show, and he’s not the most emotionally central, but every time he appears, he brings a very specific kind of danger."
2. "imo he’s really underrated. gotham has so many theatrical villains that scarecrow can get lost in the shuffle, but his whole thing is genuinely nasty. he’s not just killing people or robbing banks, he’s making them hallucinate the worst thing their brain can come up with"
