“oh, jeez. uh … okay, that’s a tall order, but i’ll give it my best shot.” mostly because of the way she smiles; genuine nostalgia by proxy, eager to share in the most trivial of memories from a time long in the past. “it was — calming, like how the sun feels first thing in the morning in summer before it gets too hot. there was always this hint of … have you ever smelled a hubflower, when it’s just starting to grow? kind of like that. just — fresh. clean. like the olfactory equivalent of a comfort food. this probably isn’t helping, huh?”
maverick’s nose wrinkles, brow furrowed in concentration. the sun in the morning, before it gets really hot. hubflowers, at the start of their bloom. bits and pieces of a world she knows that just fall short of the scent he’s trying to thread for her from a time she’ll never experience. she opens her eyes, smile a bit broader. “gonna be honest, i was a little worried there wasn’t gonna be anything clean enough in this time for you to try to describe it, but i think ... i think i get the picture. it’s not the same as your clean laundry, but if you go out to the melon patches when they still have blossoms, right before they start budding fruit, it might be a decent substitute. you have to go early in the morning. i’d say before the sun even really comes up over the horizon. the scent changes then.”

“checks out.” god help her, she’s almost giggling. “— they could mix and match, too. the savage worms. the wiggly bonecrushers. i literally met a girl named bittercup once. and a kid named knick knack, and a grown man who said his name was ‘sister.’”
“was there someone else named paddywhack? i’d like to change my name, if not. you can be bruiser. it fits nicely with butch.”

“please tell me that’s verifiable. please tell me we’re gonna be able to find a raider gang called the wiggly worms. let me remember what serotonin feels like.”
“listen, i can’t say for one-hundred-percent sure. but odds are we will. how many times can ferocious bundles of people use things like ‘ savage ‘ and ‘ bonecrusher ‘ before they end up with wiggly and worm as the only options left?” she taps her temple. “math.”

“shallow, huh?” a soft, nostalgic smile touches his mouth, pooling in the warmth of his gaze. “alright — hot showers, for starters. fresh coffee, clean bedsheets. clean everything, really. most guys i knew wouldn’t touch laundry with a ten - foot pole, but there was something almost … therapeutic about it for me. plus, the smell. people out here might be calmer if they could just smell clean laundry. i sound crazier than mama murphy, don’t i.”
all of those things sound unachievable. like parts of the fairytale narrative they’d just been talking about. undoubtedly, it’s how he’s talking about it, with a soft look akin to the warm glow of a candle, that has her intrigued. “crazy? no. that’s a stretch. odd, yeah. a bit, i can’t lie.” her smile broadens and lingers, but she closes her eyes. “describe the smell for me. let me see if i can understand where you’re coming from.”

“everything in black and white — ? yeah. i’ve heard the fairytale versions. an idyllic fantasy was never how the world was, but … people believe what they need to. whatever helps them get through the day. as long as they’re not hurting anyone else, who am i to tell them otherwise?”
“we all have things we hold on to. in some form. you’re right, that happens to be theirs,” she nods, resting her chin just atop her pulled up knee. “what do you miss most about that time? don’t be afraid to get shallow with your answer, i won’t judge.”

“i guess people were just as greedy then as they are now, and greed makes you do desperate things. it wasn’t all bad. hard to believe, i know.”
“... it’s not, actually. a lot of the hearsay involving back then paints it out to be like some fairytale. all the idealized parts or all the brutal parts. never an in-between, you know? you make it sound more real.”
