I know he’s remembering this moment…
Sanji x Nami / Road x Gerd paralel in the latest one piece chapter 1182
I've seen a lot of discourse surrounding OPLA Sanji talking about Sora. Full disclosure, I have not seen the latest season of OPLA, but I did watch the first. Too many moments that endeared me to the characters, had been changed in a way that I felt missed the initial intent of them, and put me off watching further seasons.
Any way, this is a vent of sorts. I just wanted a place to collect my thoughts on it. If you enjoyed the scene, that is fine. You are welcome to enjoy the change. That being said, this post may not be for you.
So, again I have not watched the 2nd season. It might make sense in the show why things played out the way it did. When thinking about how things happened in the anime/manga, it would make more sense for Usopp to be handling Nami's sickness poorly. As a reader/watcher, we are already aware that Usopp lost his mother through sickness. Nami and Usopp have a great bond in the animaga, so it could have been a sweet way in the LA to sort of develop it more.
It's only with hindsight that you could theories, that Sanji kept watch in the crowsnest, as he was unable to sleep from worry. Maybe he was so adamant to travel with Luffy up the mountain, as he wanted to be able to do something to help, when he wasn't able to with Sora. This is only speculation though, as it was not hinted to be the case in the original source.
I know there is a chance that Oda did not plan Sanji's second backstory that far back, but I'm also sceptical of that. Mainly as his first story started with Sanji being 10 years old on a cruise ship. There was no mention of him losing his parents in the storm. There is also this SBS that came out around Arlong Park.
This could be a joke from Oda as a lot of the SBS answers tend to be jokes. That being said, it could have been foreshadowing that there is more to Sanji, than we initially thought. So I agree that Oda did not fully plan Sanji's backstory; Sanji was only a quad due to Oda's daughter (I still think Sanji was always meant to be the 3rd kid, due to his name) but I think Oda planned some of it.
Now why Sanji telling Nami would not be in character for OG Sanji. Even though Sanji is emotional, he is not vulnerable in front of the crew. If he does have a vulnerable moment, he is pretty much corned into it, or he is with Luffy. Only Luffy has seen him cry at the Baratie and in WCI. Nami did find Sanji at Enis Lobby, but I don't remember him crying in the manga. He was definitely fustrated at himself, but not sad. I suppose Sanji telling Zoro to get a new cook in Thriller Bark and asking Zoro to kill him in Wano, could be considered as vulnerable. Actually, now that I think about it, Sanji admitting that his body was acting strange, could be a sign of vulnerability. Also Sanji asking Robin for help. These last 3 examples are after WCI, when begins to start healing after everything that happened to him.
Sanji is pretty traumatised after growing up in Germa. He was beaten for showing emotions. When Sora died, Sanji was thrown into the dungeon for 6 months forced to wear an iron mask, when he cried at her grave. When Sanji ran into Judge after trying to escape, Judge told Sanji to never speak about where he is from. It's not too far of a leap to come to the conclusions that Sanji would be too scared, or at least hesitant, to talk about Germa and, by extention, his mother. (Even if it is subconsciously) This is the guy that was told by Zeff that he would pretty much disown Sanji if he ever hit woman, so would rather die than kick a woman. Sanji sort of takes rules to the extreme. Sanji is extreme and needs therapy.
OG Sanji never mentions Sora to anyone in the crew, during or after WCI. The only person he talks about his mother to, is Reiju. I can't remember who brought Sora up.
I get people's point that the LA may never reach WCI, so what's the harm in showing things early. I don't really agree with it, as it spoils things for people who decide to pick up the animanga after. (Like Garp existence in the LA. Which is something that ODA did not agree to. People seem to think Oda has power over everything in the LA, but he probably has the same level of involvement as he does in most of the OP movies, which is not much at all) That being said, there were other ways Sanji's second backstory could had been hinted to. Did you know that Usopp's goggles are from the North Blue?
There could have been a line where Sanji states he recognises the design. When Usopp states that they are from the Navy in the North Blue, Sanji can cover his slip up by saying he probably saw a customer at the Baratie with them. Y'know, hint at Sanji's past, without doing anything too OOC.
So. Yeah. There are my thoughts, thown out into the void. If you have gotten this far, thank you for taking the time to humor my rambles.
This is exactly what i’ve 💭 , Sanji’s low self-esteem would make him think he doesn’t deserve conpassion from anyone, this makes him avoid his feelings and it’s the reason he never talks about it. In addition, it’s been will said by oda that the strawhats pasts doesn’t matter, because them being strawhats means they’ve overcome their ties to the past to join luffy. This is basically why no one ever speaks about their past, because luffy cares about the future. I defend like the concept of nami reminding sanji of sora, but i’ve liked it better if it was more subtle.
In honour of opla, friendly reminder that Sanji and Nami remind each other of their respective mothers.
