So the response is to threaten the NGOs that support Democratic causes with antiterrorism laws and removal of tax exmpt status (something they already tried to do with the Big Beautiful Bill earlier this year but that failed due to public pressure), thus removing an avenue for applying peaceful public pressure and solving differences via negotiation.
Result: fewer things can be solved peacefully, more violence.

Well, here we are under Trump again, and everyone working in domestic counterrorism or monitoring foreign malign influence at the FBI or Pentagon has either been fired or reassigned to immigration, and all of the funding for de-escalation and deradicalization has been clawed back.
And now the polarization and calls to violence are back again, with a vengeance, egged on by people at the highest levels of power... particularly Stephen Miller and JD Vance, who aren't just calling for war but holy war. While at the same time Peter Theil lectures silicon valley elites about the political usefulness of invoking the Antichrist to create an enemy and consolidate your own power.
Some things can't be negotiated out.

he new defense bill allows guns-for-hire at the border. More people should be worried about what happens when you allow a mercenary army into this country. Donald Trump wasn't able to use the national guard as his private army so this will be the obvious next step.
Democracy is the only way out of this, but MAGA have to see it that way too. My MAGA father in law told me recently he thinks Russia, China and "the Middle East" are increasing division in the country and he only wants a better world for his grandchildren.
The day after Charlie Kirk was shot there were bomb threats against the DNC and eight historically black colleges and universities. Yesterday two students at HBCUs were found hanging from trees on campus. The bomb threats remind me of Russian bomb threats against polling places in democratic areas in 2024. But the looks-like-lynchings strike me as probably home grown.
As Hankyoreh, a South Korean leftist newspaper, observed in an opinion piece yesterday "The sight of our workers being led out in chains resembles images of African slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries being dragged out by their owners."
None of it looks good, the people at the very top want conflict, want violence. They are encouraging violence while removing tools to prevent violence.
Anyway, think about attending a protest. Do it now while we still can! Millions of people have been protesting peacefully every other weekend for the last six months. Odds are your local protest will be peaceful too. There are many more of us than there are of them.
