Ash crossed his arms. The only reason he wasn’t huffing was that he had to act mature in this situation. Even though part of him wanted to storm off to the lakeshore and fish until he felt better.

“So, we wait then.” Ere could have told him about her nausea and other symptoms before they had gotten in the car. Ash would have settled for her mentioning it before the halfway point. Instead she had mentioned it when they were 2/3 the way there and Ash had to keep driving til they hit the town near the lake because he refused to pay for a price gouged pregnancy test at a gas station.

“Yeah,” she agrees with no small amount of hostility in her voice. “We wait.”

She flops back onto the bed so that she doesn’t have to see that stupid stick of plastic staring back at her. Inwardly, she reviews every little thing that brought them to this point- they barely made it to the charging station because someone (quite possibly her, though she’s loathe to admit it) forgot to plug the car in last night, their lunches were soggy from a spilled water bottle, not to mention the nausea as she tried to hold breakfast down when they set out.... and now they were alone together in a picturesque lake cabin for a week. Miserable.

Propped up against the pillows, she still glares at him, holding him equally responsible for their current misfortune.

She doesn’t laugh- her face just deepens into a frown. Even responding feels like more than the “joke” deserves for a few tense seconds.

She spares a glance to the test, which still lies innocuous on the table. It’s cheap and poorly-made, and the directions on the box told her that it would take a few minutes to show results. That means they have a few more minutes to bicker before getting results.

She wants a drink, but she probably shouldn’t… at least until they know the results.

“Coulda’ known by now, if you would’ve stopped earlier.” Her voice is accusatory, now blaming him for their stressful predicament here and now. That’s what she really faults him for in the moment- the tension of not knowing.

Ash sighed, crossing his arms defensively. “I drove as fast as I could to get here.” He thought that the sooner they got to the lake house, the sooner Ere would feel better. Fresh air, not being stuck on the car, and the wonderful feeling of not being in the city.

He recognized that his ‘just carsick’ theory was foolish. Denial had just led to things getting worse and more tense. But, he was scared. Sure, he and Ere had talked about having kids. But the second Ash was faced with the possibility of becoming a father, he panicked. Not the best instinct, he thought.

They had zipped up the highway, Ash making tight, fast turns as if trying to outrun his fear. Him driving the same cocky way he flew shuttles had probably made things worse. “I’m sorry, Ere.” He hung his head. “I was a real jerk.”

Ash caught Ere's glare and and glared back, hoping she'd notice. It wasn't his fault he was terrible with people feeling sick. Or that the road to the lake was so bumpy. Okay, the first part was his fault. The least he could do is have some sympathy for his wife.

Ash's instinct was to go and pull the cover off the boat. Take it out on the lake and fish until his head was clear. But running off to *fish* of all things was too much of a stereotype.

"I guess you don't want to go out onto the water while we wait?" Ash winced at his joke. Instead of breaking the tension, he had added to it. "Sorry."

i think part of the problem was that they primarily cared about him as a twist/plot point instead of as a character. also that they didn’t think through the implications of what they had written.

i especially like the “black ops preying on traumatized veterans” bit  (ETA: @onaperduamedee informed me that this point was first made by @nomi–sunrider​) because that’s what i assumed was the reason ash joined section 31: he has no place else to go. in a very literal sense, he’s not the ash tyler that joined starfleet. the klingons think he’s dead and a traitor, and the mere fact of his survival is information that might destabilize the klingon empire and peace between the empire and the federation, so the federation can’t really take him back as a regular crew member, who’d show up on crew manifests and such. (and that’s without taking into account that the federation, in-canon, doesn’t fully understand the voq-int-ash procedure, so it had to be undone by l’rell. if you don’t understand it enough to undo it, how can you be certain this undoing is permanent and doesn’t have any side effects?)

side note: and now he’s head of section 31? because what? process of elimination? you’re the only one who didn’t die, so you must be good at this stuff.

all of this is not really well thought out, and it makes me sad because there is so much potential.

I’ve written a lot of posts about how Season 1 of Discovery understood that part of what makes Star Trek great and endure for so long is its ability to look at the worst parts of humanity while still allowing us to hope for a future. The earlier shows and spin-offs mainly had to use metaphors for this, shine that spotlight on humanity’s failings through alien hijinks and a plucky crew saving the day with big speeches. But it’s always there.

The original series was able to make a lot of statements just in the characters the wrote and the actors they chose to cast. Some of the later shows were able to do more, but the episodic nature of the shows generally forced them to deal with an issue within the time frame of 1-2 episodes. This allowed them to look at all different kinds of issues in our society and humanity in general.

Discovery’s serialized set-up allowed them to choose ONE facet of humanity and spend FIFTEEN HOURS looking deep into how war and trauma can bring out the darkness in even the best of us and how important it is to choose what’s right over what’s easy especially in the darkest of situations. And whether you believe they executed it well or not, their message and intent was VERY CLEAR. Every character played a part in getting this message across from the Captain from the Mirror Verse who’s grown up in war and is used to manipulating everyone to get what he wants to the scientist whose work was stolen and repurposed for a violence he never intended it for to the naive and ambitious young cadet to the alien who is always anxious and on alert to the prisoner of war who is LITERALLY forced to turn into someone/something he’s not in order to betray the people he loves to the woman who grew up in two worlds and whose trauma inadvertently helped start this war they’re now in and who has to learn to put all of it aside in order to save both sides of the war from themselves.

Discovery’s first season had a POINT and Ash Tyler was an integral part of that point, the message just isn’t the same without him, just like it wouldn’t be the same without Lorca or Stamets or Tilly or Michael. 

Discovery’s second season was a reaction to all the pissbaby fanbois who took one look at the first season and declared it “Not Star Trek”. Because of Klingons, because of Spock’s sister, because of dark, because of war, etc. So the second season just became a nostalgia romp that was no more than a sci-fi adventure told over 15 episodes. It had no interest in looking into the depths of humanity, it had no interest in trying to critique modern society and how we can do better, it had no interest in continuing the story it had told in season 1 because that story is what they had heard people didn’t like.

And now all those pieces that fit so perfectly together to tell the story of how war pushes us to become the very monsters we think we’re fighting are left in a story that doesn’t support them and doesn’t need them.

This is why the characters that have the most screen time and the most presence in the story are Pike and Spock. Because this story wasn’t about the Discovery crew, it COULDN’T be about the Discovery crew. The Discovery crew is there to tell a story about WAR and TRAUMA. And Season 2 did NOT want to be about war and trauma and how that can affect people. Season 2 could have been a really interesting look at what happens to soldiers after the war is over who now have to either come home or keep moving and working. It could have looked at how this crew now has to figure out how to go back to being scientists instead of soldiers and how they heal from the experience.

Season 1′s characters do not fit into a narrative that’s just fun sci-fi drama with no substance. They just don’t. So characters got added who they could write to fit the narrative they wanted for season 2 (or expanded, as Airiam was and Saru to a certain extent). The rest of the main ensemble was shunted off to the side, barely to be seen around the narrative.

Ash Tyler suffers the most from this as he’s the only one who got written off, but he’s by far not the only one who had a lot of promise that got entirely squandered in Season 2. Here’s hoping the rest of the ensemble can get some redemption in Season 3 and the narrative can go back to being character-driven rather than plot-driven again.

Although to be fair, I never really explored that, because in just about every verse, Ash adopts the baby L’Rell had, because he refuses to left *his* son be raised by *her*. (also I make the baby half human)

She nearly hisses, or maybe growls, when she hears him outside the bathroom. He would ask.

She puts the cap back on the test, flimsy and plastic and old-fashioned as it is, and stalks out of the bathroom. Slaps the test down onto the dresser with a little more force than necessary.

“It’ll be a few minutes before we know.”

(”Because someone said we should stop at the store to get a pregnancy test, but someone kept driving and put it off till the last minute, so we couldn’t even get one that looks like it’s from this century.” This goes unsaid, because she wants to maintain some semblance of dignity, but it is felt.)

“Don’t you worry,” Chris said, with the kind of “I’m-almost-ignoring-that” voice that’s intended to ignore the comment, not the person. Instead, he skipped the mounting block and hopped straight onto his horse, a big brown mare nearly two hands taller than Ash’s horse. “I pulled Two-Step out of retirement just for you, he won’t hurt a fly and he never bucks. Two steps, after all.”

He guided himself and his horse back around to offer Ash a hand on the block with a grin, proud of his own joke and the distraction.

“Get it? He won’t take more than two steps if he has to.”

Ash laughed. “Ah, okay.” He accepted Chris’ hand, stood on the block, then mounted the horse, trying to not fall. He was surprised when he found himself actually sitting on the saddle. Ash shifted trying to get comfortable in the saddle. He quickly gave up though, realizing that her nerves were the real problem.

“What now?” Ash asked, picked up the reins and trying to copy how Chris was holding them.

“You’re welcome, yeah,” he says offhand as he crouches down to the ground again. This time, it’s to wipe off a smear of mud that currently covers the other side’s engravings. He goes down the line, putting wildflowers by each name. Taylor, 2237. Jamie, 2238. Cecelia, 2231-42. Avery, 2250. It feels nice to remember them. Or, as he explained to his therapists, it feels nice to know that his Leland (it’s always “his” Leland, even though that too feels disrespectful to Ash) is taking care of their babies in the afterlife.

He feels… mostly… bad for ignoring Ash’s tears. Or at least, not giving them his full attention. It’s easy to justify, when all people are telling him is to take time for himself. After all, he gave his whole heart and a not-insignificant part of his body for his marriage. And what’s he doing with that? He’s clearly stuck in the past, smiling softly to his babies’ (little more than zygotes, really) names, promising them that Papa’s here, it’s okay. And ignoring what’s in the present. Christopher, he can almost hear Le say. You’re being a hypocrite. So he stands up, takes Ash’s hand.“Thank you for coming.”

Ash nodded. He felt sad and sick to his stomach all at once. He wasn’t sure how to feel about this. The grave was just... a lot. It made him feel like the third wheel in this relationship. Just a boy toy brought in for fun. Which was probably true. That’s what Ash told himself when he was downstairs in the middle of the night crying and hoping Chris couldn’t hear. It was easier, maybe, to ignore how much he missed Leland. And Chris, who he felt had grown more distant.

He was surprised when Chis took his hand. He didn’t pull away, instead, he gently squeezed Chris’ hand and said, “You’re welcome. Once again, thank you for bringing me up here. It means a lot.” Technically, none of that was a lie.

But did they love you? Come on Tyler, deep down in there you know you were just used. Look me in the metaphorical eye and say that they loved you just as much as you loved them.

Ash thought. Leland had probably never loved him, having eyes only for Chris. But Chris... Ash thought back. He couldn't remember a time when Chris had said the words. Chris had always found a way around it. "Maybe they didn't love me," Ash retorted. "But I loved them. And even if they were using me, we all enjoyed the relationship." Ash wanted to believe that. Wanted to believe that them supposibly using him was okay since he asked them out.

There's a reason L'Rell didn't want you to see Tenavik again. That's his real name, not that stupid human name you tried to give him when you wanted to "save" him from the monastery. How do you know how to be a dad? You couldn't even hold on to relationships, there's no way you can care for a child.

Ash was surprised by the message on his padd. Especially since the sender wasn't listed. His heart sank as he read it. Without thinking, he typed back. "Tajiri Tenavik Tyler is my son. And I am going to protect him and give him the best life I can. Even if I have to do that without a partner."

Pike and Leland were just using you, Pike especially. Leland never kept it in his pants, but you know Chrissy. What about his devout monogamy makes you think he'd be interested in you? All he ever wanted out of Leland was companionship and a baby, and when Leland failed at both it was easy to turn to you, the little lost puppy who clinged to every captain he saw. He knew you would give him what he wanted, with enough sweet talk. You're too gullible, Tyler.

Ash hated this dream. Or rather nightmare. "I'm not gullible! And I loved them both!"
