This week I won the Haba Poetry Award for this poem and five others, now published in the Midrivers Review. • Last night I participated in a poetry contest with some close friends and had the time of my life. • This morning I spoke at my old high school about why I love writing. I was blown away by the students who fearlessly performed their work in front of hundreds of their peers- I did not have the same courage they do when I was in high school. I was also very impressed by the students who planned Timberland’s Lit Fest and I’m so happy to see everyone embracing the literary community! • Today I’m especially grateful for the gifts, passion, and opportunities God has given me. The past year or so has not been easy but He is consistently showing me His love and I’m slowly learning to be still and patient. ☺️ #LitFest17 #writing #poetry #HereIAm #leadme #midriversreview

“where do you see yourself in five years”

slightly dehydrated, eating refried beans out of a can in an abandoned old metal trailer in the desert. My look can be described as “grungey power ranger shounen.” With me are four other people with similar aesthetics, dipping their feet in a duct-taped wading pool and sharing a cooler of popsicles. Against a cinder-block fire-pit that may or may not shelter multiple rattlesnakes leans a bright yellow vespa that may or may not be able to hover, and a goat is chewing on what’s left of a potted plant just outside the trailer’s front door. On an old radio with antenna longer than I am tall, tuned into an un-locatable radio station, my chemical romance crackles in and out. The government thinks I’m dead and my student loans are void. Things are good.

Poeticstories' Secret Valentine

The Secret Valentine! 

Oh yeah, we are doing a wonderful Valentine`s Day gift-exchange, the exchange of poetry, and we want you to participate! We also want to thank @strikezilla01 for the inspiration behind this wonderful idea!

For our Secret Valentine, we will randomly assign you a person that you will have to write a poem, a story, a note, anything you want, for them to receive on Tumblr on Valentine’s Day. And don’t worry, you will be assigned to someone as well. 

Here are the rules::

1) Enter by sending a message to @denmysterywoman and you will get paired up with a person. This person will not be the same person who are going to give you your gift, so please keep it a secret that you`re participating, and do not tell anyone. 2) You may write poetry, creative writing, art, whatever you want to make your Secret Valentine oh so happy. 3) When it is time to share your gift, you will have to post your gift and to tag the person who is your Secret Valentine in the post… the secret will then be revealed, not before!

He’s a lighthouse

surrounded by jagged personalities

Isolated

but protected from crashing waves

His beam extends in the dark

beyond the sights of noon visitors

to save travelers with his presence

He’s my lighthouse

I’ve been watching from my window

as his light dances across the sea spray

Childhood had me blindly chasing lightning bugs

until one night

I washed out into the ocean

My parents faces blurred in the distance

so I swam for the only thing I saw clearly

My lighthouse

I cut myself on the shoreline

and tripped up to the base

I laid fingertips on chipping paint

that I couldn’t see from afar

He may not keep me safe forever

but the wolves stay off in the shadows

and his light has never let me down before
