El Picaflor gigante (Giant Hummingbird) es el picaflor más grande del mundo (mide entre 21 y 24 cm de largo). A diferencia de otros picaflores, no destaca mayormente por sus colores, sino que por su tamaño. Su aleteo es característicamente más lento que el de otros picaflores de menor tamaño, lo que facilita congelar su movimiento en una fotografía.
