Why Mona Being A to Protect Her Friendship with Hanna Makes Total Sense (submitted by skinnyappeal-blog)
I know people doubt that Mona’s real reason to become A again was because the girls were taking Hanna away from her when they weren’t even friends yet, but I think this actually makes a lot of sense when I re-watch the first episode. Think about it:
1) Mona had spent enough time being tormented by Alison that she snapped and became A (that shows a lot of trauma), and the theme of most of the flashbacks with all the girls together is that they never stood up to Alison’s bullying. In fact, this is directly said to Hanna by Lucas later in the season.
2) Hanna had clearly changed since Alison’s disappearance. In later seasons, we learn that Mona purposefully sought out Hanna’s friendship and helped her reinvent herself. Mona clearly really cares for Hanna who, as Mona says, is Mona’s best and only friend. As someone who had snapped to defend herself before, she would be very protective about losing the one thing she felt she had.
3) While Mona and Hanna are shoplifting, Hanna leaves Mona to go talk to Spencer. We later learn have not kept in contact, which means this kind of interaction would have been unusual. And once again, Mona is left behind.
4) The very next day, Aria returns and is hanging out with Emily when Mona first sees her. Look at this reaction when Hanna waves at Aria:
That’s not a neutral expression. Not only has she been deserted by Hanna for Spencer, now Aria has returned, is hanging out with Emily (there weren’t assigned seats, but they’re sitting together), and Hanna is being friendly.
5) Next, Spencer walks in and takes Hanna’s attention AGAIN. Mona reacts to this as well:
While we can’t see her face, the scene makes it clear that she quickly checks to see who has Hanna’s attention.
All of a sudden, the girls are all together again. In Mona’s mind, she’s already gotten rid of Alison. Now these girls are back, the others all having been cruel to her by not standing up for her to Alison, and Hanna is already showing interest. She defended herself before, and she can do it again; in fact, she already has the perfect scheme since she’s done it before. This is why Aria gets the first text–she’s the instigator because of her return and the easy opportunity that presented itself with Ezra. Mona didn’t know exactly what had happened, but she has an especially quick mind and everyone in that classroom knew something was up with how Ezra reacted to seeing Aria. It was an unfortunate side effect that returning to being A drew the girls back together. From Mona’s perspective, who had never had a friend, threatening someone with their secrets would keep people silent and isolated. It certainly worked with Alison.
In the end, Mona unwittingly proved that Alison was right (and Spencer was wrong): As Alison said at the very beginning, “Friends do share secrets. It’s what keeps us close.”
