Native of Cherán, a community indigenous to Michoacán, Edwing Ezequiel Jiménez Fabián, student of History of the University Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH), won a scholarship to take part in the summer Program ITAM-Stanford 2016.
During the summer program, the Mexican student will be able to work together with American researchers, analyze the overall risks in security and governance in Latin America and especially in their community of origin.
After learning that was selected, Edwing Ezekiel explained his interest in the program is to enrich his gaze and studies on their native land, which has suffered the onslaught of outsiders, from politicians and companies, which have disrupted their way of life and customs.
Edwing Ezequiel develops as a thesis topic the uses and appropriations of the forest in the Cherán community between the year of 1950 to 2015, in search of applying the results of its research in favor of the social and economic development of this.
It considered that the fact that the indigenous communities as his should look for the claim of its forms of social organization and combat organized crime and violence on their land and customs agents, it is worth being taken into consideration like alternatives to life respected by the State and the federal authorities.
He added that the topic of the issue of governance, interested in know what Stanford researchers have to say about the development of new communities in harmony with the environmental preservation, and to be able to attract towards Cherán, research on these topics, with their collaboration as research assistant.
To be selected as a participant in the program, Edwing Ezequiel competed along with another six students of the University Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo and against indigenous students from all institutions of higher education affiliated with the National Association of universities and institutions of higher education (ANUIES).
After obtaining the scholarship, the indigenous student said satisfied and thanked his parents, classmates, teachers for the support so that he achieved this academic benefit, which will enrich its knowledge and of course he will direct his research efforts towards a postgraduate.
After being selected, Edwing Ezequiel will receive a training course by the ITAM and the ANUIES and then he will travel to the United States, where it will be from July 11 until July 22 as a student at Stanford University.
The Summer Program ITAM-Stanford 2016 is a joint effort between the United States Embassy in Mexico, the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM) the Center for Latin American Studies and the Institute of International Studies Freeman Spogli (FSI) at Stanford University.
