Upper-Intermediate / Lesson 19: -자마자 & -는 대로(As soon as...)

안녕하세요! Hey everyone! Today we have a pretty quick lesson about how to say, “as soon as…” using -자마자 and -는 대로. Let’s start!

-자마자

Let’s start with the more common of the two, -자마자. Here’s the formula to use:

[verb stem] + 자마자 + [second clause] = As soon as I [verb], [something else happens]

Let’s see some examples!

집에 가자마자 잠들었어요. = As soon as I came home, I fell asleep.

숙제를 다 끝내자마자 게임을 하면 돼요. = You can play video games as soon as you finish all the homework.

Notice how regardless of the tense of the first verb, you just attach -자마자 to the stem – you don’t add -았/었 anywhere.

슬기 씨는 식당에서 나가자마자 좋은 리뷰를 올렸어요. = As soon as Seulgi left the restaurant, she left a good review. 

집에 돌아가자마자 엄마가 저를 혼냈어요. = As soon as I got back home, my mom yelled at me.

Pretty straightforward, I hope!

-는 대로

You may also hear -는 대로 being used like this. It is less common than -자마자, but it does not mean exactly the same thing, so I’m going to distinguish the two! But let’s look at a formula first:

[verb stem] + 는 대로 + [second clause] = As soon as I [verb], [something else happens]

The main difference between the two is that -는 대로 can only be used for things that you plan to do in the future or for commands (if you’re saying a command, that too counts as something in the future – the other person will do what you’re telling them to do sometime after you tell them to do it). For example:

수업이 끝나는 대로 밥 먹으러 같이 가자. = As soon as class ends, let’s go eat. 

I think it would also be acceptable to use -자마자 here, but keep in mind that -는 대로 is exclusively for future plans. You can’t say something like 집에 가는 대로 잠들었어요 because the act of you sleeping was in the past, and therefore you’re not planning to go to sleep (and also you probably didn’t plan on going to sleep in the past either – you just passed out). Let’s see some more examples!

도착하는 대로 엄마한테 전화할 거예요. = I’m going to call my mom as soon as I arrive.

대학교에 다니는 대로 열심히 공부할 거예요. = As soon as I go to college, I’ll study really hard.

졸업하는 대로 꼭 취업해. = Be sure to find a job as soon as you graduate.

Upper-Intermediate / Lesson 19: -긴 하다

안녕하세요! Hey everyone! In this lesson, we’re going to learn about how to say something you hear in English a lot! In English, we say things like “yeah, it is expensive, but I’m going to buy it anyway” or “I am busy, but I do want to hang out.” We can say this in Korean using -긴 하다! Let’s start!

What is -긴 하다?

-긴 하다 is a shortened (and more common I think) version of -기는 하다. It is often used for when you’re admitting something, but showing a contrast at the same time. It is often paired with structures that show a contrast such as -지만 or -ㄴ/는데 Here’s a formula:

[verb / adjective stem] + 긴 하다 + [rest of sentence] 

This is how you attach it regardless of tense! Just attach it to the stem!

Let’s see some sentences to better understand this!

그 남자가 잘생긴 한데 재수 없어요. = That man is handsome, but he’s rude.

So what’s the difference between this sentence and “그 남자가 잘생겼는데 재수 없어요”? When you use -긴 하다, it emphasizes that you’re admitting something, but also that you’re trying to defend your opinion. It’s like when in English we say, “yeah, he IS handsome, but he’s rude.” You’re admitting that he’s good-looking, however, you’re also pointing out that he’s rude, and perhaps that’s the reason why you don’t like him or something. You’re admitting something, but you’re also defending another opinion that you have. Let’s see some more examples!

그 영화가 재미있기는 한데 너무 길어요. = That movie is interesting, but it’s too long. 

걔가 착하긴 한데 내 스타일 아냐. = He is nice, but he’s not my type.

아이스크림이 맛있긴 하지만 먹으면 배가 아파서 못 먹어요. = Ice cream is good, but I can’t eat it because it makes my stomach hurt.

-긴 + [verb / adjective]

Sometimes, you’ll hear the first verb or adjective used to replace 하다 in the middle. For example, instead of 그 영화가 재미있기는 한데 너무 길어요, you might hear 그 영화가 재미있긴 재미있는데 너무 길어요. This would translate to the same thing. I think it would give the “but” part extra emphasis though, as in “yeah, it IS interesting, BUT it’s too long.”

Upper-Intermediate / Lesson 22: -김에

안녕하세요! Hey everyone! Welcome to this lesson, which is all about -김에! This is a really useful structure to use – you can use it to say, “while you’re at it, can you get some milk?” or “since you’re here, why don’t you stay for dinner?” Let’s start!

-김에 = While you’re at it

-김에 is attached to verbs to mean “while I was [verb]-ing” or “while I’m [verb]-ing.” (The subject doesn’t always have to be “I” btw!) -김에 isn’t really just used to say “while I’m doing something, I also do something else.” It’s used to say “while I’m at something, I’ll do something else since it’s convenient for me to do so.” Before we look at some examples to illustrate this, let’s see some formulas!

{Present Tense} [verb stem] + 는 김에 

{Past Tense} [verb stem] + ㄴ/ 김에

Let’s see some examples!

가게에 가는 김에 우유 더 사 줄래요? = While you’re at the store, can you buy more milk? / Since you’re going to the store, can you get some more milk while you’re there?

Here, you’re not just talking about doing two actions at the same time as you would with -(으)면서, which also translates to “while.” These two actions, going to the store and buying milk, are closely related because buying milk is convenient when one is already at the store. Think of it in English when we say “while you’re at it, why don’t you buy some more milk?” Let’s see some more examples!

(from Naver Dictionary) 오신 김에 저녁이나 같이 하시죠. = While you’re here, why don’t you have dinner with us?

Your guest has come all the way from home to visit you, so why don’t they stay for dinner while they’re here?

원피스를 사러 나간 김에 구두도 샀어요. = While I went out to buy a dress, I bought shoes too. / While I was out shopping for a dress, I bought shoes too.

Maybe you were at the mall shopping for a dress and decided you should buy a pair of shoes to go with it while you’re at it.

Notice how I attached -ㄴ 김에 here to describe something you did in the past!

대구에 지나간 김에 할머니를 방문했어요. = While I was passing through Daegu, I visited my grandmother.

Maybe your grandmother lives in Daegu, a place you might not be in often, so you decided to take the opportunity while you were there to go visit her. 

도서관에 있는 김에 생물학 과제를 시작할 거예요. = While I’m at the library, I’ll start my biology project. 

아마존에서 교과서를 찾는 김에 새 펜 찾아요. = I’m searching for new pens while I’m looking for a textbook on Amazon.

Upper-Intermediate / Lesson 23: 차라리 (Rather)

안녕하세요! Hey everyone! In this lesson, we’re going to learn about the word 차라리, which mean “rather”! It’s useful for saying things like “I’d rather stay home than go to a party.” Let’s start!

What is 차라리?

차라리 essentially carries the meaning of “rather.” When you want to say something like “I’d rather take the subway than drive,” you can use 차라리. But where exactly in the sentence should you put 차라리? That’s where -(으)느니 차라리 comes in!

-느니 차라리

First, let’s look at a formula:

[verb stem 1] + 느니 차라리 + [verb 2] = I would rather [verb 2] than [verb 1]

Sentences with -느니 차라리 can end in a number of different ways, such as:

-겠어(요), which essentially means “would”

Some form of 낫다, which means “to be better”

-ㄹ/을래(요), meaning that you are going to do something or want to do something

Let’s see some examples!

운전하느니 지하철을 타겠어요. = I would rather take the subway than drive.

게임하느니 책을 읽겠어요. = I would rather read a book than play video games.

에어콘을 켜느니 창문을 여는게 나을 것 같아요. = I would rather open a window than turn the AC on. / I think opening a window is better than turning on the AC.

역기를 들느니 요가 하는 게 낫겠어요. = I would rather do yoga than lift weights.

(from Naver Dictionary) 나는 차라리 집에서 숙제나 할래. = I’d rather stay home and do my homework.

Notice how you don’t always need to use -(으)느니 when using 차리리 depending on the sentence! If you’re just talking about one option (in this case, staying home and doing homework), rather than comparing two options, just use 차라리.

Can you do a lesson on Adjective/Verb 기는 무슨 and Adjective/Verb 기는 개뿔? I can't find examples for 기는 무슨 but 기는 개뿔 is supposedly the slang version of it with the same meaning. I'm curious about the feeling they give to a sentence.

Example:

A: 야 그 가수 노래 잘부르지 않냐?"

B: "잘부르기는 개뿔."

A: "너 돈 많이 벌지?"

B: 많이 벌긴 개뿔."

-기는 무슨 and -기는 개뿔 do mean the same thing -- -기는 개뿔 is more of a slang version of -기는 무슨 as you mentioned. Before we talk about the grammar, what do 무슨 and 개뿔 mean?

무슨

무슨 means “what” and must come before a noun (I think it’s technically an adjective). So you can say: 

무슨 책 읽어요? = “what book are you reading?” 

It’s that kind of “what.” More about 무슨 here!

You’ll also hear sentences like 무슨 소리야? which literally translates to “what noise is it?” but really means “what are you saying?” It’s used when someone says some nonsense or something ridiculous. 

개뿔

개뿔 is more of a slang word meaning “jack shit.” You might here the sentence 넌 개뿔도 몰라 meaning “you don’t know anything.” Not sure if this counts as a curse word, but it definitely seems rude in my opinion.

-기는

Let’s move onto -기는, which is often shortened to -긴 in this sort of context. You probably already know that -는 is a topic particle. -기 is one way to turn verbs/adjectives into nouns and is simply attached to stems. You might see sentences like 

수영하기 어려워요 = Swimming is difficult. 

Here, 수영하다 (to swim) is turned into a noun, 수영하기 (swimming; the act of swimming).

Use the following formula:

[verb / adjective stem] + 기는 무슨 OR 기는 개뿔

What these essentially mean is similar to the English phrases "my foot" or "my ass" when someone says something we disagree with. Let's see the examples you gave, for instance:

A: 야 그 가수 노래 잘부르지 않냐? = Hey, doesn't that singer sing well?

B: 잘부르기는 무슨. = Yeah right they sing well (sarcastic). / They don’t sing well at all. / What do you mean they sing well?

A: 너 돈 많이 벌지? = You make a lot of money, right?

B: 많이 벌긴 개뿔. = I make a lot of money my ass. / Bullshit I make a lot of money.

Essentially, you’re just making the claim that the other person is wrong and negating what they said. To me, when I hear it in K-dramas it usually sounds pretty strong, especially 개뿔, although that’s just my opinion with my limited exposure to conversational Korean. I would keep these phrases for when you’re talking to someone you don’t have to be super polite to. If anyone has more insight on the differences in nuance between the two, let me know!

I feel like maybe -기는 could be used in politer situations depending on the context and if you end it with -요. For example:

소연: 민지 씨는 잘 공부하나 봐요. = You must study well, Minji. / You must be a good student, Minji,

민지: 잘 공부하기는요. = I don’t study that well. / I’m not a great student at all.

Here, I feel like Minji’s tone wouldn’t be super strong and she would be kind of laughing. This would be a modest way of saying “nah, I’m not a great student.” She wouldn’t be disagreeing/arguing with the person, but is instead trying to be modest if that makes sense. Upper-Intermediate / Lesson26: -고 보니까

안녕하세요 여러분! Hey everyone! Today’s lesson is about -고 보니까, which is one way to express realization. Let’s start!

Use this formula:

[verb stem] + 고 보니까 + [rest of sentence]

The -까 can be dropped with no difference in meaning.

This structure is used to express your realization after you finish doing an action. Let’s look at an example:

한국어 수업을 듣고 보니까 꽤 어렵더라고요. = After taking a Korean class, I’ve realized that it’s quite difficult.

This sentence communicates your realization after you completed the action of taking a Korean class, that realization being that Korean is difficult to learn. I want to emphasize that this structure can only be used when talking about a completed action, not one that is currently in progress. 

Notice that this structure is seen in sentences that have other endings communicating some sort of realization or surprise like 것 같다, -네요, and -더라고요. Let’s see some more examples! 

책을 다 읽고 보니까 생각보다 재미있어요. = After reading the book, I see that it’s more interesting than I thought.

그러고 보니까 그 콘서트 표는 꽤 비싸네요. = Now that I think about it, that concert ticket it quite expensive.

그러고 보니 is a fixed expression meaning “now that I think about it” or “come to think of it.”

처음에는 김치를 싫었는데 다시 먹어보고 보니 괜찮더라고요. = At first, I didn’t like kimchi, but after trying it again, it’s okay.

원래는 걔가 좀 차가운 것 같지만 더 친해지보니 아주 착하네요. = Originally I thought she was a little cold, but now that I’ve gotten closer to her, she’s very nice.

here's an unfiltered sunrise from 6 AM of today, it was a bit misty as it has been raining for some time within the day these days. It was a pleasant morning, giving me energy for my first water fasting (I'm not excited about it but I feel my body needs to be cleansed once a week).

For Korean, I'm reviewing my notes from Friday before starting with a new lecture as there's a quiz after the second grammar lecture. Here's some notes from Friday's notes!

Verb -아도 / 어도 / 여도 되다

어떤 행위에 대해 허락을 물어보거나 이에 대해 그렇게 하라고 허용함을 나타낼 때. < Used when asking for permission to do something or indicating that it is permitted to do an action. Can be translated to 'can' or 'may' >

아도 되다 - used for verbs ending in 아, 오

ex. 사다 < to buy > = 사도 되다 < (you) can buy >

사도 돼요? < can I buy it? >

사도 돼요. < (you) can buy it.

ex. 보다 < to see/look > = 봐도 되다 < (you) can look/see >

이 앨범을 봐도 돼요? < can I look at this album? >

봐도 돼요. < You can look. >

어도 되다 - used for verbs ending in 어.

ex. 썰다 < to chop, to slice > = 썰어도 되다 < (you) can chop/slice >

그 양파를썰다 돼요? < Can you chop the onion? >

네, 썰다 돼요. < Yes, I can chop it. >

여도 되다 - used for verbs ending in 이.

ex. 찍다 < to take (picture) > = 찍여도 되다 < (you) can take a picture >

이 편지를 찍여도 돼요? < Can I take a picture of this letter? >

아니요, 사진을 찍을 안돼요. < No, you cannot take pictures. >

for -하다 verbs, change 하 to 해도 and add 되다.

ex. 요리하다 < to cook > = 요리해도 되다 < (you) can cook >

라면을 요리해도 돼요 < Can I cook ramen? >

네, 라면을 요리해도 돼요. < Yes, you can cook ramen. >

Hello! Thank you for being so clear with explanations on every topic you cover. I'm making amazing progress with your help! I was wondering if you know somewhere that can help me with conjugations? I seem to have trouble with merging rules (and irregulars) and would like a reference table or something to that effect. Thanks for any help you can give!

Hi! I'm so glad my blog helps! :) So it seems like a lot of people probably want a little conjugation cheat sheet type of thing. I decided to make some charts myself for you guys to reference! (which is why this took me a while to answer so I’m sorry for the wait!) Now you all probably know that there are SO many Korean sentence endings and stuff, but these charts will just cover conjugations concerning the most common levels of formality and tense! Hope this helps!!

(BTW I’m sorry that the quality of these charts looks terrible for some reason. I hope you guys can still read them! Maybe in the future I’ll post these somewhere else. Also, I tried to fit in as many irregularities as possible, but there’s a chance my list isn’t exhaustive. But I think I covered a lot in these charts so I hope you guys enjoy!)

Level 8 / Lesson 6: Passive Verbs (part 2)

안녕하세요! Hi everyone! In my last lesson, I introduced how to use some passive verbs in Korean. In this lesson, it’s going to get a little more complicated. But I’ll try to make it a little less so. :) Let’s start!

1. Some non-되다 Passive Verbs: -이/히/리/기

In the previous lesson, we learned that active verbs ending in -하다 can be changed to passive verbs by replacing -하다 with -되다. But there are some examples of active verbs that do not end in -하다 as well. A lot of passive verbs end in suffixes similar to those of causative verbs, such as -이/히/리/기. I think that this picture is a great list of some passive verbs like this. This amazing list is made by the Tumblr studybuddykor! I highly recommend you check them out!:

Let’s see some sample sentences:

계획을 바꿨어요. = I changed the plans.

계획이 바뀌었어요. = The plans changed.

고양이는 밥을 먹었어요. = The cat ate the food.

밥이 고양이에게 먹혔어요. = The food was eaten by the cat. 

저는 버튼을 눌렀어요. = I pushed the button.

버튼이 눌렸어요. = The button was pushed.

제 여자친구를 안아요. = I hug my girlfriend.

제 여자친구가 저에게 안겨요. = My girlfriend is hugged by me.

Let’s talk a little about the verbs 보이다 (to be seen) and 들리다 (to be heard). Although these are technically passive verbs, they’re used very often and are not really translated like passive verbs. For instance:

 네가 보여. = I can see you.

그 음악 들리니? = Can you hear that music? 

Notice how I didn’t translate these sentences as “you are seen” or “is that music heard?” The translations above, using “can you,” are closer to what Korean speakers mean when they say sentences with those verbs. 

2. -아/어지다

Another way to make regular verbs passive is by adding -아/어지다 to their stems. Keep in mind this can only be used for some verbs. For instance:

주다 = to give (선물을 줬어요. = I gave a gift.) 

주어지다 = to be given (선물이 주어졌어요. = A gift was given.)

3. Some More Complicated Stuff: -아/어 있다

Korean passive verbs can still get a little more complicated. Let’s take these verbs for example (howtostudykorean.com used this as an example as well):

닫다 = to close (저는 문을 닫아요. = I close the door.)

닫히다 = to be closed (문이 닫혀요. = The door is closed [by someone/something]. / The door is being closed [by someone/something].)

Both of those verbs are, well, verbs. They are describing someone doing something or something being done. But let’s look at this English sentence:

The door is closed.

To us English speakers, when we hear this sentence, we don’t think of the door being closed shut, but instead we think of a door that is in the state of closed – a closed door. Essentially, we think of “closed” as an adjective rather than a verb. So how do we describe this in Korean? 

You can add -아/어 있다 to the passive version of a verb. For instance:

문이 닫혀 있어요. = The door is closed. / The door is in the state of closed.

This differs from 문이 닫혀요 because 문이 닫혀요 suggests that the door was closed by someone or something. But 문이 닫혀 있어요 is just describing the state of the door. Hope that all makes sense!

To add emphasis to show how much better/more something is, use: 훨씬 (before 더)

- 달은 태양보다 훨씬 더 작아요. - The moon is way smaller than the sun/ Compared to the sun, the moon is way smaller.

- 공부보다 수영이 훨씬 더 재미있어요.- Swimming is way more fun than studying/ Compared to studying, swimming is way more fun.

Level 8 / Lesson 1: I might...

안녕하세요 여러분! Hi everyone! Welcome to the first Level 8 lesson! I’d like to teach you two useful ways to say “might” in Korean. Let’s begin!

-지 모르다

(I have another lesson that deals with -지 모르다 here!)

We know that 모르다 means “to not know.” This form can have two possible translations: it can mean something like “I might go to school tomorrow,” or it could mean “I don’t know if I will go to school tomorrow” (this is what it literally means). Use the following formulas:

Present Tense:

[adjective stem] + ㄴ/은지 모르다 

[verb stem] + 는지 모르다 

Past Tense:

[verb / adjective stem] +았 / 었 + 는지 모르다 

Future Tense:

[verb / adjective stem] + ㄹ/을지 모르다

I would say that in the future tense, the sentence can be translated as either “I don’t know if…” or “might…,” while in the present and past tense, it leans more toward “I don’t know if…” only. Hope that makes sense!

Let’s read some examples!

친구가 집에 있는지 모르겠어요. = I don’t know if my friend is home. 

그 영화가 너무 긴지 모르겠어요. = I don’t know if this movie is too long.

그 시험을 잘 봤는지 모르겠어요. = I don’t know if I did well on the test.

그는 거짓말했는지 모르겠어요. = I don’t know if he was lying.

비가 올지 모르겠어요. (from howtostudykorean.com) = It might rain. / I don’t know if it will rain.

내일은 학교에 갈지 모르겠어요. = I might go to school tomorrow. / I don’t know if I will go to school tomorrow.

시험이 어려울지 모르겠어요. = The test might be difficult. / I don’t know if the test will be difficult.

When saying a sentence like this in English, we often say something like “I don’t know if it will rain or not.” In Korean, there is a way to say that “or not.” Just add another -지 structure with the same verb/adjective, but add an 안 in front of it. For example:

비가 올지 안 올지 모르겠어요. = I don’t know if it will rain or not.

**Notice how I conjugated 모르다 as 모르겠어(요). I’m pretty sure, however, that using 몰라(요) is acceptable as well! Let’s move onto the second method!

-ㄹ/을 수도 있다

We’ve seen a structure similar to this one, which is -ㄹ/을수 있다. This one, however, is much different! It’s another way to say “I might…” Use this formula:

[verb stem] + ㄹ/을 수도 있다

For example:

내일은 학교에 갈 수도 있어요. = I might go to school tomorrow.

새 핸드폰을 살 수도 있어요. = I might buy a new cellphone.

그는 거짓말을 할 수도 있었어요. = He might have lied

Notice how I simply conjugated 있다 to the past tense to make this sentence be about the past.
