can you make a post on how to catch ai writing on here? i think i have an idea but its still hard, but i am (maybe) seeing it in three growing fandoms ( specifically tv show fandoms )
this is by no means a comprehensive list, itās just what iāve noticed most frequently here on tumblr specifically!!
honestly, the over-reliance on ai-generated fics on tumblr has made me extremely unmotivated to write for the last few months, and i hope that people can be more up honest about their ai use so that readers can choose not to engage in those fics.
itās so discouraging to find a fic that sounds good and realise a human being didnāt write it.
my (incomplete) how-to guide on spotting ai generated fics:
i think a major takeaway of this list is that humans do use these techniques (of course they do, itās how ai learned to use it!!) but writers do it sparingly!! we understand that most of these methods are supposed to emphasise something special, not be used in every paragraph:
1. paragraph breaks

this is such a common thing with ai!! it will just be several one-line paragraphs. writers typically use this to emphasise moments that are funny/tense/romantic/etc., but ai will use it for the most mundane things like:
āblue.
his eyes were blue.
they were so blue it was unfair.ā
2. the use of ānot this, but thatā and similar formulations
these are very common for ai!! āloving her wasnāt like falling rain; it was a storm that never stopped and kept my heart thundering every time i saw her.ā that isnāt an inherently bad sentence, itās just very formulaic and relies on a lack of specificity in the comparison. āshe wasnāt hurting, she was absolutely furious.ā comparison is a great tool for writing, but we can tell when a writer has thoughtfully selected a contrast to make a point and when ai-slop threw two things together randomly/because theyāre similar. this often goes hand in hand with some of the other signs of ai
3. using the word āalmostā, ākind ofā, or āit was as ifā a lot
āit almost felt like his smile was just for meā, āhis smile was almost crookedā, āher lack of attention was almost offensiveā, āa sad smile, the kind that said he was holding something backā. i know this one seems vague, but ai-written fics rely on this hesitation very often!! itās an easy word to reach for as a writer, but ai implements it in awkward ways that donāt feel natural for the situation
4. ā...ā
if i have to read characters thinking with ā...ā every paragraph, i am putting it down. ābutā¦ no. it canāt be. youāve seen him talking to other girls, and he never looks at you like thatā¦ and his smile is different etc. etc.ā is a very common use of this. also said in dialogue, especially accompanied by a cliche: āyou seemā¦ different. like youāre the only person here who doesnāt want a piece of me.ā
5. over-reliance on specific metaphors to an unnatural degree (often mixed in with some kind of cheesy twist)
a lot of ābeing with him was like drowning in the ocean; trapped behind choppy waves, and a little salty.ā of course metaphors are a lovely part of creative writing, but itās when every second paragraph has some kind of unrelated metaphor that reveals how impersonal they are. ālike a shift in geography that you donāt notice until youāre standing in a completely different placeā. usually, writers will use metaphors for moments of emphasis or catharsis. using them all the time just makes it flippant, but itās what ai often used because they think it makes it sound poetic.
i personally have written a fic that very heavily relies on frequent use of metaphors, but they were all connected and related to the same motif rather than having many that had nothing to do with each other
6. unrealistic dialogue
iām not complaining in a āthatās not what a mechanical engineer would say about xyzā way, i mean something along the lines of: āand then my little sister said: āyou look at him like heās the sun, and he looks back at you like heās finally letting himself bask in your warmth.āā i really doubt y/nās 12 year old sister would talk like that. i think that certain characters would certainly be more poetic/mature, but itās usually coming from the most unrealistic source when ai utilises this.
7. short, choppy sentences used all the time
āhe smiled at you. like, really smiled. at you. not like how he smiled at others.ā this could definitely reflect someone whoās nervous and excited, but if every single paragraph sounds like that? it loses its emphasis completely.
8. overusing italics.
itās very common for ai paragraphs to have one word or phrase in italics every other paragraph, when writers usually only use it a few times a fic to make a point. this usually looks like āshe really shouldnāt be doing this. she knew it was wrong, but it was him they were taking about.ā the emphasis on āreallyā makes perfect sense, but itās unnecessary for the next phrase to have italics. i often find ai does this very frequently even in very short fics, and it just feels like there isnāt any real emotion/experience/specificity behind the writing.
here is my final message to anyone who writes and relies on generative ai for fan fiction (or any other creative writing):
please donāt do it. aside from the ethical and environmental concerns (which are plentiful, concerning, and deeply preventable if you stop using ai), it prevents you from ever improving your skills and makes the writing feel cold, distant, and artificial.
because it is!! a literal machine wrote it!!
i would much rather read fics that have spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, plot-holes, and other imperfectionsāso long as i know that a human being put time, effort, care, and love into creating it.
iām sick of people making excuses. it really is that serious.
i personally have no patience, empathy, or love for people who use generative ai. if you have a good idea for a fic but donāt want to spend time writing it, find someone who takes requests.
