Week 8

I was able to watch a video lecture on implementation. After watching this video it helped me think about some of the challenges my client will have when it comes to improving their social media outlook. 

One of the challenges I can see my client facing is the ability to stay consistent. My clients organization is run by a few people who are older and don't tend to keep up with the new trends or focus on taking photos or even being on social media for that matter! The issue with that is people crave consistency, so if they are unable to complete that then they will loose followers and their social medias will stay on the lower end. In order to fix this upcoming issue I believe this organization needs to hire someone who is in charge of just social media specifically. This way someones main focus is making their organizations social medias consistent and up to date.

Another issue they will have with implementation is becoming more in-sync with all their social medias. They currently have facebook, twitter and instagram; however, these three sites contain very different looks and information on their pages. They need to create one solid motto and have it laid out on all three social media platforms. They also need their media profile pictures to be similar and effective for their organization.

In order to start them on the implementation it will be important to have a team meeting first. Get every member of their organization together to discuss the new found changes and make sure everyone is ready to work together as a team. Once the team is up to date with the new ideas and strategies for the organizations then they can launch the implementation of their future changes!

Week 7

While doing the Hootsuite module five I learned a key component to online social media building and maintaining. The major key to social media is the content you are sharing; it must stay with the current trends, keep your community interested, and it needs to be unique and desired! In order to make sure your content is effective you must first create a plan that works for your company as well as your viewers. The content needs to be informative but also engaging for viewers. A good example I like to refer to is instagram stories: when people are able to tag certain sites on their instagram pages or stories and get reposted by that specific page... people go crazy! Especially when its a brand or company they really enjoy. 

Sites will even do consistent content like having a poll on a hot topic each week, or doing giveaways once a week to people who tag friends in their posts and follow their account. When you do engaging things on social media you get a lot more responses and people looking forward to your next idea. Another great idea was when the social media snapchat decided to create filters and location services. These make people laugh, helps people create small clips to send to friends and families whenever they want. One of my favorite things snapchat did was the memories in your personal snapchat account. They will bring videos from the day they were taken years ago and remind you of them. This helps me look back at those fun memories and allows me to re-share them to my fellow snap chatters. 

With all that being said, in order for a companies social media to become an organization they need followers! The only way that can happen and your social can grow into a community is through effective planning and effective content. Without solid content your sites won't grow followers and if you don't grow any followers you won't create a community online.

Social Organization

After reading chapters four and five in our book I was informed greatly on how important organization is in the social media world. The first aspect is I was intrigued by was collaboration; having an organizations social media hold strong collaboration builds the strength of the media content itself. Also knowing that when your accounts build followers that your content has to stay upbeat and interesting for these followers. Otherwise, people will become bored with your social media sites and eventually unfollow the account or become less interested in your business. An example of social organization would be fortnite. This is a game that is constantly updated weekly, and the content stays fresh and new; I’m not a huge video game fan and this game is so intriguing and pulls me in time and time again. This helped me learn how to build a more solid social community using the key principles that have been laid out in the book. I can take these new lessons and apply them to my clients social media contents which include: FaceBook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

While going through module four of the Hootsuite training, I learned so much about building a secure social media brand. When it comes to using social media your staff and consumers need to hav solid communication, feel safe, and feel confident in the product you are selling them. As a business person you need to ask yourself a few questions before starting your online social media content. Who are your target participants? The collaboration focus? What do followers/participants get out of it? Value recognition? When creating a social media brand you need to have stable content and be able to reach all of your targeted audience.

Legal side of Big Data

After watching “The Legal Side of Big Data,” I was asked to look at three things.  The first was, “what should businesses be aware of when using big data?” The next was “what should consumers be aware of?” and the last was “what is the best way to balance the opportunities and threats presented by the development of big data?” 

First of all, I think when it comes to being apart of a business people loose track of the personal information they are sharing because it is for their company. Big data that the government asks for can get way beyond personal information. They no longer really just look for your social security, birthday and other personal items. They are also looking for things such as drug or alcohol use, your mental state and other personal records you shouldn't need to share at your work place. There are certain items about their employees that companies can't get ahold of personally. So I believe they use big government data to make it seem like the information they are asking for us required. When using the governments big data companies need to realize they have to protect their employees. When certain data is released about employees that is when people start to receive scam calls, junk mail, and even have their personal information hacked overall. Companies should filter what information they give big data companies and remember to protect their employees at all costs. Like we have learned from the video, data is manipulated every day and sent to hundreds of sites. They less you give out, the more protected you will be. 

The huge issue is technology. We use technology for so many things and technology does so many things without us! For example, technology runs updates, failure preventions and other miscellaneous things all on its own self program. Technology doesn't sleep, so Ince you enter your credit card or your sensitive information about your personal life technology has it forever and can send it wherever. Yes, technology is extremely useful for us today, however, we need to remember that it needs to have some limits. 

Secondly, I think consumers are so use to giving out personal information they don't even blink when a specific site says “social security number required.” Consumers are so willing to deliver big data companies every inch of their lives without thinking twice, it is something we have to stop. One thing that sucks for companies is the process of filling for things such as bankruptcy. This is sensitive information you don't really want to sell... however, when you file for bankruptcy your personal information is no longer yours to these companies. The sad thing is with every purchase and move we make as humans we are creating a trail of our personal lives. Once that trail is created bug data companies can do whatever they want with it, including sell it to whoever they want. Consumers need to remember... no matter what your personal information isn't safe!

Lastly, in order to prepare and prevent we need to have a plan of of action and security measures. We must have a solid plan and limit to who and how much information we are willing to share. We must also limit who can use certain information within a company. The less hands on sensitive information the less likely the company is to have a leak of sensitive information. It all comes down to prevention planning and strict security. With those two items you can ensure all your data and your employees data is protected.

Junk news spreads fast

When first reading this article I was kind of thrown back a little bit. I actually read the article a few times because each line was so intriguing and informational. New information that I had never thought about or even realized. 

The most interesting idea to me was the algorithms. The fact that social media comes down to math deciding what we see and what we don't see easily on the web. It is almost sickening that these algorithms decide what news I get to see. The worst part of it all comes down to the fact that some of the information that goes viral and pops up on our feed isn't accurate. False information can spread so quickly on the web, which is the fault of the algorithms. These are mathematical calculations, this isn't real people deciding what news is spread. 

Second item to discuss is advertising. The first item that almost made me laugh was clickbait. This happens to me CONSTANTLY! I am drawn to these items in social that reveal some type of secret or funny video. Clickbait is a smart way to advertise and get people to stray away from the original social media they are on and onto random links on the web. The second reason, micro-targeting, is also very true. We as people seriously allow the media to control our feelings, actions and opinions daily. 

The last item is exposure. Which is something we do daily as we troll our social medias; selecting which content we like and want to see more of, and denying or blocking content we don't want to see. For example, I love to watch Americans got Talent videos, these are items my social media have filtered and relaxed I enjoy based on my views and clicks. Another perfect aspect of exposure is the ability to privacy, having a private account to avoid others from digging into your personal life. Within exposure comes “preferred content.” These are items that will pop up because you have either recently searched it or hit a ton of likes and shares on that specific item. For example, I recently was searching cedar point and Kalahari on google; the next day ads for those places were popping up on my social media feeds. It amazes me that this exposure comes mainly from an algorithm realizing I was interested in a specific item and so the advertisement came from that. 

Overall, this article was very eye opening and showed me just how much social media can sink into our lives. It has a way of digging us into our screens and keeping us hooked, even if its on things such as fake news.

Social Media Consultant

I believe as a social media consultant some important things you need to know about your company include; the companies mission statement, their goals, their weaknesses, and their greatest accomplishments. Some of the things I find important to know are obviously but others you may ask why. Firstly, you need to know their goals so you can gear your social content for that company in a manor that speaks for the entire company as a whole. This includes presenting their missions statement, and showing people just how dedicated this company is. Showing off the companies greatest accomplishments, allowing for people to see just how great this specific company can be. However, you must also be prepared to expose any weaknesses the companies competition may know and us tiki experts to scare customers away. For example, I think as a consultant you should know the weaknesses and faults of your company. If you know these things than you can help express your companies best qualities while still acknowledging their weaknesses. Knowing your weaknesses shows that you are aware of the imperfections this company has, yet you still support and rally for this specific company. As a consultant it’s great to do your “homework” and be prepared for any backlash other companies may portray about your company. Now, if I was my own professional consultant I would advise myself to do a few things to improve my professional social media presence. The first thing would be to avoid sharing inappropriate items on social media. These things aren’t said directly by me... however, they reflect me personally. As they say, “guilty by association.” I would need to unfollow certain accounts that hold immaturity and things that are unrelated to the way I want my professional self to look. Now, in regards to my future I have made sure my content is less college student and more young business man. I have laid off social media a little bit too, allowing myself to grow stronger social media wise before I get back into it full time. I have also revised my bios and pictures featured on my accounts.

Week three, 60 minutes

1. Big Data is such a powerful tool because consumers can see files of information on every single human being, They can tell everything about you by your everyday actions. They know exactly what person you are by overmatching what websites you use, what places you travel, what you spend money online, and what bars you go too. They will know everything, this can be very dangerous because it will show your employer everything personal that should be private. Therefore, it could be beneficial for people if they have a solid background and live a very average and low key life. On the opposite side of the spectrum it could cause a lot of issues for people trying to get jobs that live a little more on the edge and conduct things on their own personal time outside the work place that they thought their employers wouldn’t find out. This can show a persons true colors and even dig up a few skeletons in the closet the may cause negative vibes for the person trying to get a job. 

To limit the harm I would just say don't make it open to the public what information you have on other people and also they don't need tot trace peoples locations and basically stalk their every movement. One of the biggest dangers would be selling a person identity and the personal information these companies know to the wrong person. I believe it is a strong tool, however, it needs to be extremely regulated and peoples rights and privacy need to be respected. What employees do outside of work on their own time should stay their own personal business. On the other hand, I think to limit the abuse we need to set in strict rules. These are peoples identities and lives being published; personal and private information shouldn't be published to the world. 

2. As I was reading the The Internet’s Original Sin, I was disgusted at the reality of how true it was. The fact that as I am searching on the internet for various items I am interested in; or if you are posting to your social media about a specific vacation destination you are traveling too these data companies are keeping a tab and filing what you search. Every time I shop online for certain items I will see them appear on my various social media sites the next day. I never put those similarities together when that first started happening. However, now it is very obvious that I have a trail of information kept on file about me. These type of situations make me want to stray away from the internet and other technology forms that these data companies use to create tabs on me. It is scary to me how much a company has on me and keeps to distribute or use whenever they please.

Experimenting with Social Media

When it comes to social media I don’t typically overuse it daily. However, there are certain times I am sitting on social media... knowing I could be spending time with others or creating more memories. For my experiment I decided to pick certain time frames to be proactive on social media. I decided on my average day I work between six and eight hours, and after that I work out, have dinner and watch movies typically with my girlfriend. So, for my social media times I picked fifteen minutes of my lunch break, thirty minutes before my workout and then an hour when I lay down at night for bed. Now, for me during work I am not allowed to have my phone so it is easier to stay off it during those times. However, I text frequently after work and it was a nice challenge to test myself today after work to text people back without checking notifications or opening social media out of boredom. With that being said, I also turned my notification pings off on my phone. Those notifications just urge us to open social media which for me typically turns into trolling social media for longer than I need to. To be honest the results were great! I cut my snapchat use in that twenty-four hour period in half. When I was being aware of how much time I originally would spend on social media it was very surreal to stay off it. I love having my phone and being able to connect with others via the internet, however, I am really happy we did this experiment and opened my eyes to the things I need to change personally. 

I picked these three spans to be my social media time because I'm not a huge social media guy and I am constantly with my loved ones so it helps me fall into that schedule with ease. I think my next step would be to text less as it makes me build up screen time on my phone. However, texting is a large part of communication with my co-workers, family, and friends. I also believe as I grow older I need to not shape to my social media craved generation. As my generation grows older I hope they focus less on likes and more on building a life and family of their own. 

Overall, this was an amazing experiment to partake in. I not only cut back on social media but I also realized how important it is to soak up the life happening around you, rather than living through the screen of other peoples lives and opinions.  I plan to continue this experiment and take a step back from always turning to social media to fill space in my days.

Social Media and the Internet Today

I was fortunate to grow up and live during a time in which there was an era of before and after social media and the internet. I resonated with the article “Before the Internet” in the ways kids would pass the time before the internet such as reading, being creative with the arts, or spending a large amount of time outside. After being introduced to gmail and cell phones, I noticed my attention was directed at these platforms for most of the day. Especially with having classes, a great amount of my day is spent on my Mac laptop. Not only is this a platform for my class, but it also has Youtube, Netflix, Twitter, and even texting. It acts as a phone with a larger screen, but obviously not as portable. There are definitely times when I think I use my laptop too much. 

It is beneficial to have the Internet available at all times. If you have a question, if someone wants to know about a specific topic, or if you are just plain bored, the Internet is at our disposal. There have been several instances of long periods of time that I have been without access to the Internet such as going camping for a weekend or being in a rural area outside of the country. It was definitely tough not being able to go right to my phone or laptop to be able to suppress my boredom, a topic discussed by Sherry Turkle. I was forced to find other ways to occupy my attention such as spending more time with my family and in the environment around me. I am excited to try out this social media experiment to try and alter my habits and see if it can benefit me. Good luck to everyone!

I think I was fortunate to grow up for the most of my life as a kid where social media and the internet didn't run our lives. As a kid I grew up with 6 brothers and 2 sisters, so all we did growing up was play outside! We were all very active and into sports so we were constantly outside playing around. We barley ever just sat inside and played video games, especially in the summer. Now I can unfortunately admit also that now-a-days I spend to much time on the internet and social media. I sometimes can waste a whole day due to screen time, whether thats playing video games, on my laptop, or on my phone. Good luck trying to alter your habits!

Social Media - WK 2

I’ve recently been assigned to Watch Sherry Turkle’s interview and read Emma Rathbone’s article, “Before the Internet”, found in The New Yorker on June 19, 2017. This article’s major theme was about how before the internet times were much simpler. Furthermore, Sherry Turkle’s interview, discussed our relationship with technology, about what this constant engagement means for our culture and our society. Our devices are changing the way we communicate and interact with each other.  There are many concerns with the development of psychologist in children. Ultimately, Everyone is always having their attention divided between the world of people [they’re] with and this ‘other’ reality.”

With that being said, throughout this discussion board, I will discuss (1) what I think is social media’s influence in my daily life.  (2) How I think having the Internet constantly available affects my life. (3)  Some times when I haven’t had access to the Internet for an extended period of time, and what was it like.  

Social media influences my daily life. I use social media for many things, such as socializing, finding and sharing information, shopping and simply as a diversion from a face-to-face conversation.  I use social media a lot throughout the day. For instance, in a recent study, I noted the following time spent on various forms of social media. •    Spotify – 25%; 6 minutes on screen, 2.2 hours background •    Instagram – 22%; 38 minutes on screen, 2 minutes background •    Snapchat – 10%; 14 minutes on screen, 10 minutes background •    Messages – 7%; 31 minutes on screen •    Facebook – 2%; 6 minutes on screen, 6 minutes background

Having the intern constantly available affects my life. Even though there are positives to always being able to access the internet, such as looking up direction, cooking recipes, and even health question there are also negatives. These are just a few of the ways that social media can improve people’s lives. On the other hand, social media can cause stress and other negative emotions. With the internet constantly, available I don’t always pay attention in class, or even read the textbook thoroughly. Additionally, the use of social media always makes me unfocused and interrupts several of my daily conversations.

Finally, whenever I go camping I don’t have access to the internet for an extended period of time. For me, this is very hard because I am dependent on my phone and social media. When I am unable to access the internet, I start experiencing anxiety, sadness, and depression.  I notice I am Unable to keep schedules: Furthermore, I use the Internet to do a lot of things like looking for information, corresponding, paying bills, and doing financial transactions. Therefore, without those apps, I struggle to keep up to date and have a fear of missing out.

Lastly, throughout this post  I discussed (1) what I think is social media’s influence in my daily life.  (2) How I think having the Internet constantly available affects my life. (3)  Some times when I haven’t had access to the Internet for an extended period of time, and what was it like. What are your thoughts on the use of social media?

Hey Adam, I agree with you and how much social media is important to our daily lives. As screen time goes I am on certain social medias more than you and other social medias a lot less then you. For instance, I have more time spent on snapchat with an average of 44 min a day, but I don't even have Spotify so therefore I have 0 minutes a day spent on that. I also agree with you on the fact that the use of social media always makes me unfocused and interrupts several of my daily conversations. I challenge both of us to try and use social media a lot less and focus on more important things in life!
