Do you have any advice for artists looking to open their own online shop?
Yes! Quite a lot actually
1. Your product photos are EVERYTHING. Make sure they look clean, vibrant and professional. People can't touch the products so your photos have to really sell your items.
2. Don't sell anything under $5. It's not worth your time, and if your price point is under $20 do not give free shipping unless it's for a sale or promotion.
3. Test your shipping method before sending customers orders. Make sure your way of packaging is fool proof by sending test orders to online friends or family. Have them confirm everything arrived in tact.
4. Don't overspend on packaging/presentation. While it's really cool to do and rewarding to have fully branded items come in nicely wrapped packages with logos and all that, the price isn't worth it until you're selling lots of items and can afford to buy in bulk. However, while you're new, something that can get you started with positive reviews is hand writing thank you notes with orders.
5. Your reviews are VERY important when you're starting, do the best customer service you can so your early reviews are all 5's. One 1 star review can really screw you up and unfortunately to prevent it you might need to bite the bullet and take a loss on an order to make the customer happy. Like if their order doesn't arrive or they made an error in reading your listing and it's their fault not yours, gotta just eat the cost when you're new.
I can answer anything else but those are probably the most important things c:
