i've been so occupied with work and uni i havent really been writing anything these past few weeks but today as i were trying to finish preparing food for work for tomorrow ive got an idea, that struck me so I went to write it down. Needless to say i burned my pancake-omlette hybrid and acquired another wip document.

Anyway Vincent giving his welcoming homily as Innocentius XIV and trying to incorporate a message to his congregation only to realise, that of all the languages on earth, they share knowledge of the two of them, and saying anything in English would feel insulting, in his opinion, considering what he wanted to say the most was an apology, a plea for forgiveness.

Anyway imagine the new pope finishing the speech with a mention of his congregation as a premiera, before clasping his hands in prayer and speaking in tongue that hasnt been spoken there in ages – his arabic very formal with a hint of a lisp, yet his message clear as day.

The problem is: nobody important on that square knows what the fuck he had just said, even among the clergy its maybe one or two cardinals, the newly appointed patriarchs from the South.

I can just imagine Aldo almost having a heart attack in the back, having unofficially taken the position of the secretary of state back just mere moments earlier, thinking of all the PR fires he will have to put out if he doesn't find out what have Vincent said soon. Or Lawmeli oblivious because just before that he was taken aside so he comes back to absolute chaos. Yeah

Aldo stops giving fucks before he even starts and just stares resigned at starry Eyed Vincent who just asked him if he did a good job there, at the balcony.

And Aldo wants to say yes so badly, but he doesn't know what he said either, not until one of the patriarchs from the middle East approaches them. It's the patriarch od Jerusalem, Aldo realises, and he clasps Vincents hands in his, his act taking Aldo aback while being welcomed by the Holy Father at the same time.

"We dont have much ourselves, Your Holiness," the patriarch says, his voice hushed for some reason, "but we will find a way to make sure theyre still taken care of too."

His words are met with a thankful nod, cause Vincent's eyes to glisten, and it makes Aldo realise, that those headaches might be worth enduring

Being online and not knowing imperial measurements is fun because you'll be on the internet seeing memes all talking about being six feet tall like it's a huge giant massive hulking big man size and just once decide to look it up and it's just 183 cm. That's like... 3 cm above the male average here. You could be that height and nobody would remark on it because that's literally the most normal height to be.

And then I look up what 8 inches is in cm and jesus absolutely fuck that. If I saw that irl I'm going to lock myself in the bathroom and escape through the vents.

How much do yall wanna bet that Vincent keeps falling asleep in random spots and situations??

Vincent has lived more than half of his life in active war zones. He has learned to sleep in uncomfortable places, in loud spaces, surrounded by others. He can fall asleep anywhere as long as he feels safe enough, normally whenever surrounded by people he can trust would wake him if something happens.

It begins quite unremarkable. The pope falling asleep on the couch in his apartment while having tea with Thomas. Vincent dozing off during long car rides or flights. A guard nervously shaking a sleeping Vincent awake after watching him fall asleep next to the turtle pond.

The events are shrugged off. No one can expect the new pope to be energetic constantly, especially after long days spent working without breaks.

But as the months pass and Vincent starts getting even closer to his staff, his body starts betraying him. After a night full of nightmares, Vincent falls asleep at breakfast, in front of everyone in the Santa Martha dining hall. No one mentions it, but the concerned looks he gets make him blush in embarrassment.

After a particularly tough week, the Holy Father dozes off in the middle of a meeting. He awakes to six pair of eyes staring at him. Aldo reschedules the rest of the meeting and sends Vincent to bed, where he lays awake until dinner.

Aldo and Thomas bully Vincent into seeing a doctor. They think the pope might have some kind of medical issue. Vincent reluctantly agrees to the appointment. The doctor finds nothing that can cause the fatigue, but he does note down a suspicion of PTSD and chronic pain in Vincent’s medical records.

Vincent starts finding ways to keep himself awake. He finds that copious amounts of coffee help a bit, and so does the pain of digging his fingernails into his skin whenever he notices his eyelids getting heavier.

None of them realize what is actually happening until over a year later.

Vincent gets sick. It’s nothing serious, a case of the flu that’s been going around the Vatican. He’s ordered to rest, and sent to bed.

The fever makes him confused, and he’s not sure exactly where he is. He does know, however, that it’s not safe to sleep. He’s alone, and that’s dangerous.

Thomas comes to check on him, and finds the Holy Father curled up in a corner. His feverish eyes scanning the room for threats. Luckily, some part of Vincent seems to recognize Thomas as a friend.

After showing Vincent that there’s no threats in the apartment - by opening the closets and looking under the bed, as if calming a scared child - Vincent finally agrees to return to bed.

Once the pope is tucked in, Thomas starts to make his way to the door, but Vincent grabs his arm.

Thomas is confused at first, but what the Holy Father tells him next makes him understand the past year for the first time.

“Don’t go alone, it’s not safe.”

Thomas spends the night on a chair next to Vincent’s bed, and Vincent sleeps through the night for the first time since he left his flock.

Lawrence: Well, the doctor says the assassin missed your abdominal aorta artery.

Benitez: That’s good.

Bellini: No, your Holiness, you were stabbed. You needed emergency surgery. That’s the opposite of good.

My personal belief is that after Vincent's been at the Vatican for a couple weeks and his mind and body realise he's no longer in a stressful dangerous place, ptsd is gonna hit him like a train.

Or, Vincent Benítez’s resignation doesn’t go quite as expected.

The movie is a little ambiguous on how the Pope handled Benítez’s intersexuality, but my interpretation was that Benítez himself was the one who suggested surgery (maybe he felt it was the “right thing to do”). I felt that the Pope probably wanted what was best for Benítez to feel comfortable continuing his work, and he was willing to sponsor the surgery if it meant that Benítez would be more able to reconcile things within himself.

But mainly though, I just like thinking of Benítez having someone important to him as a source of support during that disorienting time.

Generally how I see it playing out is that the previous pope would have been perfectly content to comfort Vincent, and encourage him to return to his flock. However when Vincent was sill very uncomfortable with that idea, they decided on the durgery as a compromise between the two of them. The previous pope didn't think it was neccesary, but if it meant Vincent would remain in the church, he woild pay for it out of his own pocket. He was very happy when instead of going to the airport, Vincent instead went to his office to tell him that he had decided that he was as God made him.

OKay so, there was this one book I read as a kid, and I don't remember a thing about the plot other than a bunch of bullies got a kid elected as class president, and then convinced him he needed to learn everyone in the schools's name, and by the end of the book the kid actually did it

ANYway, I don't know what the exact scenario would be, maybe someone Tedesco, or even Tremblay being salty over his simony being exposed, makes the remark to Innocent about how well he'll do if he doesn't know anyone in the Vatican? Walks away with the parting statement "I suppose you'll want to start learning names"

And of cource Vincent throws himself into it. And being Vincent he won't just stop at his staff or his Cardinals. no he's going to learn every nun, lay person, swiss guard, day labourer.

Whenever I think about Benitez in the book is described as small, and frail looking and probably a bit malnourished, I have to imagine that every nonna saw him up on the balcony and was filled with the intense desire to feed the pope.

I think that Vincent's blood type would be O negative, because it's very thematic for him to a be a universal donor, capable of helping everyone around, even if they are unable to return the favour (it also can mean several juicy whump scenarios. like him donating as much as he can, maybe more so than he should. that would be a thing that came up in his previous ministries. or if there was a major accident he would likely insist that he shouldn't get special treatment if there were others that needed help. or if a hospital ran low on supplies)

Vincent, after living in warzones for decades of his life is obviously very good, and completely natural in crisis and it is very interesting to think about.

I imagine he's developed a very accurate sixth sense for danger, like he's out in Saint Peter's square and there's someone with a weapon, and he absolutely picks up on it before the Swiss Guards who are assigned to him. Which leads to the pope tackling the man assigned to protect him, who has a good head of height on him, before the would be assassin can get a shot off. (We can discuss how Vincent would feel about the 20 to 30 year olds who are swore to give their lives for him, when he has buried many many young soldiers before coming to the Vatican)

Like, he knows how to disarm someone who's holding a gun on him. He know how to safely handle the firearm. He knows how to disarm it. Knows how to talk someone down when they're determined to commit violence against you or others. Knows how to stall, how to delay. Probably can lie pretty damn well, if the situation calls for it.

And with so much of his ministry health focussed, I have to assume he knows a lot about medical care. He knows how to triage, how to determine who can be saved, and who should be made comfortable, he can splint limbs, and stitch wounds, and calculate doses of morphine in his head. He knows how to comfort those in pain, and those in mourning, and those who are going to die. If need be, he knows how to deliver a baby. (I don't know how that particular one would come up after his election, but I really want to think of a scenario where it does).

If he is injured, he probably knows exactly how bad it is, and what steps should be taken, and whether he's able to continue on for a bit before seeking help (not that people would let him). He probably has a very high pain tolerance, and can grit his teeth, and carry on.

He is so good, arguably at his best in a crisis. And I sometimes imagine sometime into his papacy, he is faced with one- not a diplomatic crisis, or a political crisis, but a real on the ground disaster, and and after jumping into the thick of it, despite the warnings of his guards, and officials, he realizes he finally, once again, know exactly what he's doing.
