The weekend is coming and you have dinner plans. What are you going to eat??
Here are my healthy tips for eating out!
Read the menu before heading out - this allows you to plan your meal, look at the ingredients of each dish, and make a smarter decision about what you will eat.
Donāt go to the restaurant on an empty stomach - you will most likely order more than you planned, nibble on the bread or prawn crackers before your meal even comes out, and when it does, you will down it in no time!
Avoid the bread - or prawn crackers, or whatever else they place in front of you before your main meal. Not only will the calories add up, but you donāt want to feel full before your main meal is placed in front of you.
Think ānutritionally balanced mealā - Donāt be afraid to order a side salad if you feel your main meal does not satisfy your nutritional needs.
Choose a dish with vegetables - and not just any dish - how the meal is cooked plays an important part. Try to avoid anything with the word deep fried (or similar), or anything covered in rich sauces (sauce as mayonnaise, mushroom sauce etc). Choose a soup, a dish that is steamed / boiled, baked, roasted - rank in order of less time being cooked in oil.
Nothing too heavy - if you must; try to aim to have ONE heavy meal, such as pasta, risotto, rice dishes etc, ONCE a week (but if you have the willpower to fight the urge, then choose not to do so because these dishes are normally higher in fats and carbohydrates).
Eat slowly - put your fork and knife (or spoon) down in between each mouthful and chew slowly. It takes up for 20 minutes for your body to register fullness. You do not want to over-eat. Take home the left overs if you want.
Always share dessert - if you and your friends choose to have dessert, share it. You will instantly decrease your kilojoule intake without depriving your sweet tooth. Donāt be the one finishing off the dish either.
What if youāre at a buffet?! - moderation, moderation, moderation. Follow the above guidelines. Make islands out of your food (ie. make sure each dish on your plate is not touching the other). Use a smaller sized plate if available. Every time you head back to the table, make sure majority of your plate is made up of vegetable dishes.
You know best - If you know that you will be heading out that night, you might decide to have a lighter lunch. If you already had a heavy breakfast and lunch, then choose a lighter dish for dinner. Trust yourself to make a smart decision.
