OPINIONS ON POWERLESS BY LAUREN ROBERTS

Okay, so there are MANY people accusing Lauren Roberts of plagiarizing Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I’m not defending Lauren Roberts on this, I’m just saying before I dive in on MY opinion.

It annoys me I was told it was enemies to lovers only to read it and…

It felt like a Romeo and Juliet? A Petrarchan lover trope since Kai is like “Oh, I could never have her. The beast never gets the beauty.” And boom we have a Romeo. And then Paedyn is like “His people is trying to kill me. I shouldn’t have feelings for him” and we have a half-baked, typical fantasy badass-ery Juliet.

Yeah, Pae keeps threatening him, but nothing actually shows she would actually hurt him yk?How do you expect that she could actually kill him? All bark, no bite.

And the FACT THAT THEY HELP EACH OTHER.

like WTF WHAT KIND OF people HELP their ENEMIES?????? Not even strangers, THEIR ENEMIES?!??! And you tell me it’s enemies to lovers??!!!?

Yeah, I was really disappointed with the only “enemy” acting was “oh I am SO gonna slit your throat with this dagger.” Doesn’t do it, couple chapters later “I’m gonna threaten to murder you with this dagger AGAIN” “hell yeah, I’ll murder you too.” wink wink flirt flirt leaves with no blood spilt. AND THEY DO IT AGAIN. They are Petrarchan lovers, a romantasy version of Romeo and Juliet and no one can convince me otherwise.

and then let me address the plagiarism issue. Some people are saying “oh. you can’t copyright ideas and tropes. They’re just recycled book” and all the bs. Yeah, idc if the character build or backstory is the same, nor do I care about points in plot being similar. BUT I do care if they are in THE EXACT SAME STORY. Like come on, really?

And another one, Victoria Aveyard is being accused of plagiarizing Powerless. Hello? Common sense???? It came first?? “Omg those ppl are just stupid.”

Yeah, thank god for that. Now we have reasonable doubt that Powerless was plagiarized.

“Yeah and? She was really young when she published it and credited the author.”

Yes and? Publish on Wattpad or AO3?? Fanfiction is supposed to be free?? Not to be profited from??

(I tried finding more info about the plagiarism but all I found were social media posts. I draw my own theories.)

I haven't read the final book in the Powerless trilogy so I might be wrong but, isn't Paedyn supposed to have powers since both her parents are Elites?

The logic ain't logic-ing...

So she's Powerless only because its more "unique" but the author wants more "drama" so she had to turn her into Kitt's biological sister...

Recently listened to all of EPIC: the musical and here's something I really found cool.

In God Games, Athena follows the rhythm (?), anyway lyrical line of the god she's convincing but snaps back to her main theme when Ares makes insults both Odysseus and Telemachus.

I think it's cool because it shows her compliance with them until they make her angry.

Writing isn't about "creating something new". Gods, no one can do that.

It's about melding your own experiences with tropes and other influences in your life.

Yeah, it does. And guess what, it's going to beat you in every aspect of life eventually.

Well, not you specifically. Yes, it might copy how you write, how anyone writes, but because it has so much "experiences" and "influences" it becomes blurry.

Meaning, ChatGPT will always be somewhat general while you with your everything, will always be you and only you.

Don't try to find popular tropes just so you can copy them, just take a breath and write what you want to write. It doesn't matter if someone claims ChatGPT wrote it for you, you know that it was fully yours, your experiences and your influences.

When you're writing and you act out what the characters are doing, looking insane.

Or when you talk about your characters like someone would know who the fuck you're talking about.

When you want two characters to finally show some feelings toward each other but realizing you've designed them with emotional trauma causing them to be unable to easily express their feelings.

So you can't get that slow burn unless you create a plot hole...

I used to be very, very open-minded before I started to read a lot

One time the book used the word 'girlfriend' and I immediately thought, "Oh, the character is les, cool." Minutes later and the context catches up and I realize that the character is, in fact, not les, but their love interest is actually a guy and she has never dated before.

Now, I see the word "girlfriend" I immediately think, "Oh friend that's a girl, ok."

I think you see my point.

Flaws/Quirks in Male Characters That I’m BEGGING Writers to Explore

✧ Dudes who are bad at sports. Yes, Chad, not every male character needs to throw a perfect spiral in high school. Let him get hit in the face with a dodgeball. Let him (please) suck.

✧ The “pretty boy” who's not vain, just vibing. Like he knows he looks like he walked out of a Renaissance painting but has the self esteem of a lost ferret.

✧ Shy, awkward boys who don’t magically become suave by Chapter 6. No, he’s still weird at parties and says “you too” when the waiter says “enjoy your meal.”

✧ Flirtatious guys who are actually super respectful. He's flirty but not a walking lawsuit. Shocker. He’s playful, not predatory.

✧ Male friendships that aren't emotionally constipated. Yes, two guys can say “I love you, bro” and not immediately punch each other to cancel it out.

✧ The soft spoken leader. He doesn’t need to scream orders or have a “gruff, commanding voice.” He just talks, and people shut up and listen because he’s competent.

✧ Dudes with weird hobbies. like, your guy MC collect antique spoons or have a YouTube channel rating old vacuums. Why not. It’s his passion.

✧ Guys who are clingy and insecure in relationships. Not abusive, just genuinely terrified of being left on read for too long. He's trying his best, ok?

You look at your Toddler in your Arms, then at your Vampire SO rolling on the floor laughing, and then at your bleeding hand. After YEARS of not even french kissing your SO to not become a Vampire, you get turned by your 14 month old child.
