I love when a character is at their breaking point and just, one thing reminds them not to give up hope. A butterfly. A child laughing. The sun rising. Even better if that thing is a reference to something from earlier in the story—a symbol, an event, a line of dialogue. There is simply something powerful about a character wanting to abandon ship, but being reminded of why they held on in the first place.
