Magic Trick

In my room each morning

the sun cuts through the window

like a hot knife through butter.

A fan whirs without stirring

the air’s status quo, as dust

hangs in the beams of light

like the fading final chords

of an impotent weltanschauung.

Downstairs the day waits.

Brewed coffee clears the haze

with a dismissive hand. Presto!

In my dreams, I wield a prism but I only channel the light of a dying fire, from which I struggle to breathe. As the smoke whirs around my eyes, my alter ego pursues the stars with grace, while I struggle to summon the embers to match. A bell ringing doesn't crescendo for a pair of wings hovering over the inferno; I reach out for them; for their use, I paid it with a scar as I smell birthday cake and crystallizing honey abracadabra!

in my sleep

flickers of flame linger silent. hush.

in the drifting smoke of memory

wishes whirl through, uninvited.

so i am burned again, though quiet. & still ...

the pipe organ of my heart!

the ghost of lost kisses!

so i am consumed in my very own sorcery, quiet & still.

You seem so complicated

But I want

to learn you more.

like I used to do

You are just like an illusion,

that I want

to pursue.

I don't fall for you

Not anymore,

Reflection is a mirage

And I don't want

to adore.

Soliloquy For Her

When you drive north out of Santa Fe

Look west after you’ve passed Española

Abiquiu will be there on the not too distant horizon

Maybe it will be morning

Or maybe the afternoon

When the storm clouds build this time in the summer

Look closely

And remember that moment

For in that gaze

When you you get home

Look at my painting “Storm Over Abiquiu”

You’ll know me best

The honesty of that painting

That is the essence of me

The me that was and is the grist of my life

Between the sky and earth

That has held me in balance

There caught in the storm clouds

And the rain

Caressing the parched desert

Sweetly and endearingly

There you will always find me

Loving you

Just as the earth loves the rain

meaning what, precisely ?

the question hung, fanged and

inescapable, like hunger,

like bored sympathy expressed

in landscapes, as though

asked by mountains

or by the always-changing

patterns of grasslands

why the bother ?

a spiteful undertone at this

mad survival, at this

perpetual season of the hunt,

the futility of art

the bland pointlessness of creation

why the noise ?

asked by unheard voices

save time

who only shrugs

laughing at the sun

a brow-beaten godhead,

a shrinking candle

who gazes on a game

so unworthy of its light

All human decency

You have one finger

peeking from the detritus

and that is enough.

There is a lyric

you would once croon

about a town

built on a flower stem.

I hope you can also hear

its volume rising.

The rubble will become dust

someday,

easily gusted

by that old tune of yours

and you will walk away

from that edge

made of shattered bones,

an action hero

starring

in a neorealist film.

The day incinerates

the thin layers of denial

we have constructed by night

while the wisps of morning fog

dissipate in the wild grass whispering

'you started this and so you must go'

as the echoes of midnight's carillon

sift through the dust of intentions

built upon crystalline devotion

to beauty that will never bow

because we have not yet found the key

to open the gate to release us

from this perditious reality

that rewrites itself with every dawn

turning all these delicate hopes

into a brittle code incapable

of love

suppose I did always know

the games we play were for show

once the lights come on

and it’s only me

the cracks begin to show

the hollow clay doll

trying to emote be what is needed

alas but to no avail

seats are empty

fooling no one

you see I fill the space up

with wonder with splendor

to try and deceive

hope someone will conceive some use of

my pantomime keep me around

but no one dares

look past such glaring

warning signs

viewing only another sad

glum hum drum to try and ignore

as the ship goes down

the most beautiful blue

to dissolve into as a shoreline crumbles, the steep cost of consequence continues to knock on your screen door to collect. your obsession fixation, a place for the ghosts of lovers past to mingle, to compare the trinkets they have amassed. your barren souvenir shop, net zero and zippermouthed as layers are chipped off like lead paint, swept into sewer grates and sent to bodies of water that will offer no solace. this is reckoning's recourse.
