Trinity could feel everything.

First, confusion came upon him like a rogue wave, dragging him into the depths of the choppy sea of others' emotions. Panic and fear were all that he could identify after, as if the assault on his mind was led by Deimos and Phobos. He felt it coming from all directions, the empathic connections he had made flooding his mind with a choir of voices that seemed to him more infernal than celestial.

There was a fire rising, too.

He hadn't been able to tell, a week ago, whether the nightmares that had woken him up at night were his own--- and had found out that they were actually Jean's. He could never remember their contents, but she did.

As he stood there now, in front of a large but old wishing fountain in the middle of the mall, the nightmares didn't matter, for Trinity couldn't think, had almost forgotten that this had just been a normal trip to the mall until the harassment started, until he had noticed the mall security almost blatantly following him. Until they hadn't stopped. Until they'd approached him, asked him and his friend to leave, that the Xavier's Institute shirt he'd been wearing was making some people nervous. Until the emotions being hurled at him were too much, and then the two guards were far away from him, and his mind became flooded by others.

"That freak just threw those two guards through the food court!"

"He needs to get locked up!"

"I can't even bring my kids here anymore, nothing's safe!"

"I'd feel sorry if they didn't always cause trouble..."

He backed up, shaking hands coming to tangle in his hair in some attempt to relieve the pressure between his temples, breath coming in fast, their thoughts coming faster. He was feeling too much, hearing too much, his mind was pulled in too many directions. Tears came, hot as lava on his flushed skin...

"Stop, stop, stop! Just let me go!!"

...and then, the fire burst through, and a wave of energy went forward, knocked back towards those that had sent it to him. As Trinity's angered words rung through the air men, women, children, fell unconscious in front of him.

And when he opened his eyes again, looking towards the person he'd come with, there was a bright, golden glow burning in them.

What if Trinity became host of The Phoenix?

Assuming that a situation arose where it could happen—like Jean having already ascended to the White Hot Room, or just an AU, Trinity would be a strong candidate for being host not only because of his psychic abilities (sensing other mutants and their powers, telekinesis), but because his power mimicry is rooted in emotion and empathy, something that the Phoenix Force canonly wants to understand.  

Now this is kind of cheating, because in an RP, Trinity once did become Phoenix, though I never got to explore how his powers would have been affected.He would have gained the Phoenix’s powers of course, but his own powers would have been amplified to an Omega-level (which Trinity has the potential to be anyways) and that’s kind of terrifying. 

Since his natural mutations allow him to copy the powers of others by tapping into the emotions associated with them, he would most likely only manifest aspects of the Phoenix in times of extreme emotion or meditation (due to how vulnerable his powers leave his mind)

However, the onslaught of emotions due to Trinity’s power may prove a problem and could drive him to become the Dark Phoenix, depending on what caused him to manifest in the first place. I believe that Trinity would only be a temporary host (as is usually the case with non-Jean hosts), but I’d love to explore these possibilities!
