AU where Gripp is able to somewhat keep her sanity post-mermaid due to fully transitioning once leaving the Dearest Selena and not lying to Mortuga about knowing where Felicia went. However this time Mortuga actually does ask her to take the deeds and purchase the submarine in hopes of finding her, Gladia coming along as well thinking this is the best way to get herself close to the necklace and tongue again.

While she is generally much more pleasant and present, she still has moments of extreme dissociation and desperation for the tongue. However her much stronger relationship with Magnus makes this much easier to manage.

Obviously she never ends up killing him but does end up suffering the same fate, sneaking behind Magnus’ back with the necklace. By the time he realizes it’s taken him much longer than he thought to route the submarine back to Silkwirm + he’s barely seen her in the last hour, it’s too late. Of course, she leaves him a memento that he completely misses screaming for her on the other side of the aft deck door: her prized compass, recently fixed once more, laying on his bed (their bed).

really really drives me crazy that hawkshaw IS the mermaid in the sense that.. her entire appearance is based on the recurring nightmare freya had. the one of the mermaid. the same nightmare magnus had, that felicia probably had, that gripp almost certainly had too. the same nightmare even HEX was having. do you think penelope ever figured out what she did... truly figured it out? do you think it added to her feelings of horrible guilt? I do. I think so.

i wonder if mortuga ever apologized for kind of leaving gripp to die

like PRESUMABLY he (rightfully) thought gripp was a goner at that point, he literally fell overboard into the ocean with a gigantic lovecraftian beast so there's no confusion as to why he would've left as quickly as he did, and when gripp did eventually show up to the inn alive mortuga was in a stupor state and definitely not completely there to process what was happening in the moment his mind only on felicia and the mermaids tongue.

and by the point enough time had passed they were likely already at the point of bitterness and mistrust of one another to even accept an apology (gripp and magnus himself)
