The Gods Are Queer!
Happy Pride Month!!🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
To Pagans, Polytheists, Worshipers, Witches, and all manner of Spiritual Practitioners:
If you feel like you are not doing enough please give yourself some grace. We are all doing so much just to barely get by, to keep our heads slightly above water. We live in a very different world from our ancestors and the worshipers/practitioners that came before us. It’s not realistic or sustainable to try to approach your practice the same way as those who don’t have the same struggles or responsibilities as you (and this goes for the current world as well).
Try to remember that “enough” is defined by what you are able to truly give or do and that it will vary day by day. It doesn’t matter how small because to your gods, your ancestors, your guides, the universe, your magic & witchhood, none of what you give is small or trivial. Even more so considering how much the current state of the world takes from us, leaving only so much (if any) to give elsewhere. That scarcity of time/energy makes anything you choose to give so very precious. And when you don’t have anything to spare, it’s okay. Your gods still love you. Your ancestors and guides are still looking out for you. And you are still a witch. 🩷
One thing that's been on my mind a lot is how Hekate acts differently towards me compared to how other people talk about her.
Many people describe her as a distant, cold, rigid goddess, someone you shouldn't call upon for just anything, but with me she is kind, affectionate, clingy, I feel her sleeping next to me every time I'm lying down.
So I'm left feeling lost and without any idea what to do, like, is this entity next to me really Hekate? Am I going crazy? Is it all in my head?
Sorry to vent here, I'm really lost, and also sorry for any spelling mistakes, English isn't my first language.
I relate so much to this, love!
For me tho, it’s Artemis. The Artemis I know is FERAL AF!! She’s gonna stab first and ask questions probably never 🤣 Her teaching methods involve a lot of threats, bitch slaps, and banshee screaming! She’s often covered in dirt and blood (Animal? Human? Both? Who knows? She sure doesn’t!) and her favorite past time is messing with Apollo (and sometimes Hermes).
I honestly can’t recall seeing anyone describe Artemis the way I know her. Most of the time she’s depicted a lot more tame and chill. Like either a “cool girl” or “ethereal moon goddess”. I have never met those versions of Artemis. It’s giving:
But here’s what I learned after many years of feeling exactly how you do. None of us are right. And none of us are wrong. The gods are multifaceted. They have many different aspects and each aspect has a different version of the god that rules over that aspect. So while I could be working with Artemis’ wild/animalistic aspect someone else could be experiencing her lunar aspect.
There’s also the fact that we interpret certain concepts and aspects differently depending on our own experiences, cultures, and how we were raised. That can absolutely impact how you interact with a deity and how they show up. Some people can see nature/wildlife as being serene, peaceful, and motherly which could explain why Artemis shows up like that for them. I obviously see nature as a chaotic swamp witch that could either punch me or hug me and I won’t know until she decides 🤣
With all that said, there of course is always a possibility that people are lying about their experiences or they could be sincere but maybe haven’t developed the skills or knowledge yet to fully connect with a deity. While I truly believe that is very much the minority, I still think it further shows that we should never compare our experiences to what we see online.
So I hope that helps! You aren’t crazy, it all isn’t in your head, and you are absolutely experiencing Hekate. Just a different aspect/version of her!
a quick psa to anyone recently getting into greek mythology and is a victim of tumblr and/or tiktok misconceptions:
-there is no shame in being introduced to mytholgy from something like percy jackson, epic the musical or anything like that, but keep in mind that actual myths are going to be VERY different from modern retellings
-the myth of medusa you probably know (her being a victim of poseidon and being cursed by athena) isn't 100% accurate to GREEK mythology (look up ovid)
-there is no version of persephone's abduction in which persephone willingly stays with hades, that's a tumblr invention (look up homeric hymn to demeter)
-as much as i would like it, no, cerberus' name does not mean "spot" (probably a misunderstanding from this wikipedia article)
-zeus isn't the only god who does terrible things to women, your fav male god probably has done the same
-on that note, your fav greek hero has probably done some heinous shit as well
-gods are more complicated than simply being "god of [insert thing]", many titles overlap between gods and some may even change depending on where they were worshipped
-also, apollo and artemis being the gods of the sun and the moon isn't 100% accurate, their main aspects as deities originally were music and the hunt
-titans and gods aren't two wholly different concepts, titan is just the word used to decribe the generation of gods before the olympians
-hector isn't the villain some people make him out to be
-hephaestus WAS married to aphrodite. they divorced. yes, divorce was a thing in ancient greece. hephaestus' wife is aglaia
-ancient greek society didn't have the same concepts of sexuality that we have now, it's incorrect to describe virgin goddesses like artemis and athena as lesbians, BUT it's also not wholly accurate to describe them as aromantic/asexual, it's more complex than that
-you can never fully understand certain myths if you don't understand the societal context in which they were told
-myths have lots and lots of retellings, there isn't one singular "canon", but we can try to distinguish between older and newer versions and bewteen greek and roman versions
-most of what you know about sparta is probably incorrect
-reading/waching retellings is not a substitute to reading the original myths, read the iliad! read the odyssey! i know they may seem intimidating, but they're much more entertaining than you may think
greek mythology is so complex and interesting, don't go into it with preconcieved notions! try to be open to learn!
love the library. there's no risk. you can take out a book and go "wow this sucks" and just give it back. and when you do that you're still making the library's Number Go Up so you'll be able to roll the dice on even more books. all for the low low price of free/you already paid for it with your tax money so you might as well use it
Seriously, it’s free! Online & physical books!! FREE!!!
i love this trio sooo much
Just look at the cute, happy family ❤️
Daddy Mihawk keeping his 2 children in check 👌 So Beautiful ಥ_ಥ
mmm I've seen some posts around here (positive ones, I love that!) about the theoi and I don't think some of you get Persephone. I don't mean it in a "I know her better than you" way, not at all. the posts I'm referring to are ones that say things like "Persephone doesn't get mad if you don't do this or that" or "Persephone encourages you to do x and y". I get the positivity you're coming from, it's totally okay, but if you're going to add her to a list of how gods encourage people, keep it in mind her nature. she's way more than a flower goddess, she's the Queen of the dead, she's way more darker than people think. when I started worshipping her a few years back, I was shocked to find how she acts sometimes. she can be the flower goddess, yes, but she's also dreadful. if she encourages something is to move, to change, to explore darkness and maturity. please, don't take her just as the spring goddess when she's actually so complex 🥲

Go ahead, I'm waiting 👀
but what I really wanna hear are your Greek Mythology hot takes 🥵
reminder for all my helpols out there!
only you and the gods can control your practice. it’s ok to not pray or offer everyday. it’s ok to have periods of doubt or where you just feel less religious. that’s normal. if anyone is judging you for how, when, or how often you pray or practice, politely and respectfully tell them to shut up, then ignore them. they aren’t worth the energy or time.
may the gods bless yall and remember to drink water
This right here, yes yes yes! 🙌 I may be a beginner with almost ZERO knowledge but I do know that you can worship your gods however YOU can/want. It's your worship to them not anyone else's. It's you speaking to or devoting or just admiring your gods in the way that works and feels right to you meaning that as long as the intentions are there you're doing great!
you're just mad because you're hungry and tired and your legs hurt and you head hurts and you're too hot and you have depression
Feeling so attacked at this because you're absolutely right, need a leg/foot massage ASAP 😖
Oh Ares.
Oh Ares, You stand in war, but You are with people who fight for peace just as well.
Oh Ares, You who stays with courageous and stubborn, all the same as You stand with those who get silenced.
Oh Ares, You whose wrath is the fiercest, yet stand with those who talk the calmest, because they know they’re right.
You, with those who have fire in their souls, and those who were dimmed a long time ago.
You, the enemy of fear, the helping hand of the oppressed, the scream of those without a voice, the confident stand of those forced to crawl.
You, who lights the fire of rebellion, You, the sharpness and clarity of the world when panic steps away.
You, the fire in my heart, the instinct to fight, when I cannot breathe.
You, my torch, my sword, my shield.
You, my emotion and my rage. You, who gives me courage when I fight for justice.
You, who is not selfish in his wrath. You, who helps me fight for those who were cast aside.
Oh my gods! I just saw the Nector and Novel series you're introducing to the podcast! Your podcast is how I found Hellenic Polytheism so I'm super excited! I did want to ask, will there be spoilers for the books in the podcast episodes? I have all three of June's books on my TBR but haven't had the chance to read them yet.
I hope you're having a good day!
I’m so beyond touched and delighted to know that the podcast helped you discover Hellenic Polytheism! 😊💕
The Nectar & Novels episodes will contain spoilers. But our goal is to provide the titles we will be discussing in advance in case you want to read along with us and be ready for the episodes!
Destiny and me are getting matching One Piece tattoos! This will be my first ever tattoo and I’m so excited! Will post pictures when I can!
I’m officially tatted and completely obsessed with it! 😆 And tho Destiny and me didn’t share sake, we got matching tattoos which means we’re forever brothers 🥰🤣💖
Huge thank you to her for this AMAZING birthday gift!! Tho much like how she started my addiction to One Piece she now also started my addiction to tattoos! But I guess that’s payback for all the expensive shit I got her addicted to 😅
I love being polytheistic because like wdym I can just start worshipping ANY god and even if I don’t know a god too well I can just like go “this for you” AND THEY STILL ACCEPT THAT??
Details of “Apollo & Dionysus” by Leonid Ilyukhin
In some psychological & artistic disciplines, Apollonian & Dionysian are words used to describe opposite impulses- artistic, controlled, skillful, vs hedonistic, emotional & wild.
However, anyone who knows the details of Apollo & Dionysus’ history knows they are very intertwined. They share a reputation of youth & beauty, & Dionysus was said to take domain over Delphi, Apollo’s most holy site, during the winter months. Art & music are key elements of Dionysus’ worship, representing pleasure & luxury. They’re not even two sides of the same coin, they’re puzzle pieces fitting together side by side.
Donate to Support a Mom in the ICU with Cancer
$465 raised now $14,535 to go! Thank you so very much to all who have donated already, every bit counts and will go a long way for a family that really deserves it! The funds will be used for her funeral expenses as her health has been deteriorating and the doctors expect her to pass any day now.
For those that don't already know:
My boyfriend's mom is suffering from stage 4 metastatic cancer that originated in the breast. It has spread all over her back and into her arm. She's too weak to continue her chemo treatments, and she went into liver failure this past weekend (5/25/25). Things are not looking good. She's been transferred into the ICU, and doctors are making her comfortable and getting ready for the end which can be anyday now unfortunately. I would like to help my boyfriend out through this in any way I can, and I know he doesn't have the money to cover her funeral costs. Please find it in your hearts to spare a little bit; really, any amount, even $1, will be a huge help. Even just sharing the post around and getting awareness up is a tremendous help and I thank you all for it!
