lost dove. || mikado & kano
People say memories stick with you forever—— they are all the things you’ve come to know. What shape you into the person you are today.
And yet.
Mikado looked down at the parchment that assigned him an apartment and room number. According to this, he was now in the city of Hajime. He couldn’t remember how he got this; how he got on that train, with his duffle bag filled with his clothing and such. He had spent the entire time trying to piece together what had happened before all this. Unfortunately, only three things came to mind. They weren’t the information he needed. But he knew what he needed to do, in order to adjust to a new setting. Mikado best decided it was time to look for his apartment.
"Apartment three, room number seven……."
Gentle eyes looked around, as his walking brought him to what he believed was the center of the city. Anxiety started to show, as he bit his lip. He must’ve looked ridiculous, standing around in the center of the sidewalk. Keep calm, Mikado. You can do this. Even if you can’t remember anything before today. Sigh.
Mikado was lost. And by the looks of it, he wasn’t near any of the apartment buildings. The strange parchment should have at least come with a map of the city. Would’ve been more useful.
Ahh, well. Mikado decided it was best to ask a fellow citizen for some sense of direction. Walking over to the person nearest to him, he gently tapped their shoulder. He was hoping for the best out of this puzzling situation.
"Ahh… Excuse me. Do you, by any chance, know where the apartments are located? It’s my first day here and… I believe I’m currently nowhere near them."
Hajima was not a small city, but neither was it gigantic. While there may be a thousand backalleys to explore, only a surprising few skyscrapers dotted the skyline, compared to... eh? Compared to where?
In this city that was neither big nor small, Kano knew that line of thinking was dangerous. There were rumours of citizens who had lost their minds trying to uncover the truth of the train that dropped off amnesiac passengers. Exactly why he had wandered downtown--a good distraction would keep the demons at bay, right? Besides, they were probably baseless rumours, but what good was a rumour if no one tried to believe it? Of course, he'd never admit to helping spread and convolute the rumour, no, never, an angel like him? Psshaw.
Apparently he had been standing still long enough to look approachable, and a stranger's pat served as an anchor. The kid was lost, and the air around him still smelt vaguely of that train. The perfect distraction.
"Apartments, eh? Ahaha, at least you're not so lost that you don't know you're lost!" Spinning the sentence upon itself, Kano offered the boy a helpful grin. Or at least, it would be called helpful if he actually intended on being helpful. "You're a bit of a way's off, yep. But I can take ya! Have no fear, Kano Shuuya is here! Here to escort mister...?"
He gave a little hop in the intended direction, sneaking a discreet peek at the numbers written on the parchment his new playmate friend held. Apartment 3, just as he thought. If he'd come straight from the train station, he would've passed the building before entering the heart of the city. Therefore, Kano was pointedly heading in the opposite direction, off towards where the other apartments were located, that grin still plastered to his face.
“Well, Kano, it’s very nice to meet you too,” Castiel replied.
He vaguely suspected that Kano was poking fun at him with that jab about his name, but he couldn’t be sure. He’d never been terribly good with jokes. Nevertheless, he said good-naturedly, “If you want, you can call me Cas. People have called me that before.” The fact that he couldn’t remember who these people were that had called him ‘Cas’ was of little importance. He was accustomed to these holes in his memory by now. “I believe it’s a ‘nickname,’” he clarified.
The boy certainly seemed chipper for such dismal weather, but Castiel was grateful for Kano’s easy friendliness. With a glance at the downpour that didn’t seem to be letting up, he said, “I don’t suppose you’re keen on staying here for the duration of this weather.”
He took a moment to blink, then a curious grin spread its way across his features, twisting the previous image he'd had of the adult into a new, updated shape. It certainly didn't sound like this fellow got out very often; a shame he'd been caught in a storm on one of his excursions. But, as Kano was well aware, it was these kinds of people who were the most interesting to poke at--no exact examples came to mind, but that's what his gut said anyhow.
"Can't say I'm much of a rain person, Cas," he sighed in good humour, rolling back on his heels as he dug his hands into his pockets. "But apparently it's good weather to sing and dance in. True story! I saw it in a movie once! It was like, a secret ritual to make the gloomy weather less gross. Sounds worth tryin', don't'cha think~?" He gave the other a mischievous side-glance, head tilted as if to gesture outside their safe-zone.
Rainy Days | Clive & Kano
Clive blinks at him owlishly before nodding his head. “I guess I wouldn’t mind,” He answers. ”Two is always better than one, after all.”
He’s a little confused but content nonetheless now that he’s got a companion to have lunch with. It isn’t often that Clive sits down to a meal with someone, well actually he vaguely remembers the last time he’s even had a meal with others. Usually this is due to the fact that most men his age have more of a resounding social life that involves large groups and raucous meals while Clive sticks to himself and his quaint meals.
But he wasn’t really complaining. Crowds made him anxious.
"Do you have any eateries in mind?"
"Right? And isn't there that saying, somethin' like... 'food in a company tastes better than alone'? Something like that at least!"
Kano beams, glad that the other was agreeable to invitations from strangers. Then again, what could an adult have to fear from a kid anyhow? Ahh, the thought makes him really want to fall back to the pranks he had in mind, but food first. Food should always be a priority.
Through the sheet of water, he makes an exaggerated display of scouting about, muttering of how he was sure there was a café around here somewhere.
"Ah-ha! You can just barely see the sign from here, see?" He points, as if proud of his discovery. "If we run for it, maybe we won't get completely soaked?" Fat chance.

Chizakura High School... or something like that. The building loomed out in contrast to its flat surroundings, grassy sports fields punctuating the 'youthful' feel to it. From the gate, this was probably the closest Kano had gotten to the campus, aside from that one night he'd gone to see if they left the doors unlocked. They did not, and he'd immediately lost interest in the school.
Even still, he should at least check that he was enrolled or otherwise, right? Confirm he really was skipping out of something.
... Nahh. He spun on his heels and started heading back the way he came. A little ways a way, he could see someone headed towards the school ahead of him, but whether they were late for class or just wandering wasn't readily apparent. Any person made for a good playmate though, especially bored as he was.
"Hey there!" he shouted, waving enthusiastically. "School's closed for today; didn't ya get the memo?" Well, the gate was anyway.

A good vacation didn't have to be far from home. So long as the goal was pleasure and the daily grind was left behind, even the couch could be considered a hotspot destination--admittedly it was one of his favourites. Today felt like an outdoorsy day, and so Kano was enjoying his vacation on a sun-spotted branch high up among the leaves.
People watching. The park was a great place to relax, to adventure, to play, even snooze. So many different faces going about all their different businesses, which was exactly the sort of spot that would yield the most amusement. For example, that frisbee looked like it was headed straight for that person currently passing under him--
He didn't even get to see the actual impact, already clutching his stomach in hysterics. With his shaking combined with the loss of a solid grip, it really shouldn't have been much of a surprise to find himself toppling out of the tree, on a collision course with that same person from before.
Kano and Eru | Walls
Her eyes lit up in response, and she eagerly took the red can with the sense of a small child examining a new toy. She wasn't quite sure how a spray-can worked, having never really used one, so she stared at it before pointing it at the wall with a suddenly determined expression.
She was honestly very curious about what she could paint on that wall…
"I-I’ll warn you that I’m not very good, Kano-san." Eru’s voice was plain yet still somewhat focused. "So I hope I don’t disappoint you! I shall do my best to paint this wall!"
Her gaze shifted to Kano’s previously-made two lines. She decided to start where those were, and she sprayed out a line of paint whilst yelping in surprise at the hiss the can made. But she was resolute, and thus began to form elegant curls and loops around the red lines until—
…Well, that was certainly the beginnings of a small and cute little kitten.
The intensity with which she stared down the wall had Kano snickering, albeit muffled behind his hand out of a smidgen of courtesy. It reminded him of some kind of wild cat having found a juicy rabbit, using the paint so as to further entice it. Yep, a curious little kitty indeed.
"Ahaha, then I'll await your masterpiece, Eru-san!" A quiet twinge told him he shouldn't be encouraging others into his bad habits, but it couldn't hurt to just see what she'd do, right? She wouldn't fall as far as he had, right?
He stepped behind her, cocking his head to her level trying to see from her point of view. Was that... oh, you had to be kidding.
This time he couldn't hold back, cackling at the outline taking shape on the wall. Of course. He should've expected as much. "It's just... so cute... pfft--"
Castiel blinked owlishly at the boy he hadn’t even seen in his rush to escape the torrential rain. But he gathered his wits and met the boy’s warm smile and cheerful quip with a huff of frustration.
“Yes, it would seem so,” he grumbled. Then, noticing the boy’s flinch, added, “I apologize if I’ve splashed you; I didn’t realize there was anyone here.”
At this point he considered simply teleporting the two of them somewhere indoors. Had he been by himself, Castiel would have waited out the rain like the regular human being he pretended he was, on principle. But the boy, for all his bright expressions, seemed a little miserable waiting out here. Before he could possible suggest that, though, he thought it would probably be conducive to introduce himself.
“I’m Castiel, by the way,” he said abruptly. Then after a beat, gave what he hoped was a friendly smile.
He waved off the apology with a chuckle, having done it more out of an attempt to lighten the gloomy atmosphere than anything. What a peculiar adult; Kano had the idea in his head that adults were supposed to have everything together, and yet this one had not only gotten caught in the rain, but all his reactions seemed sort of... delayed.
Adding to that list of oddities: his name.
"Cass-tea-ell, huh? Boy, that sure doesn't roll off the tongue very well, huh! Names sure were different back in the day~" He punctuated this jab at his age with a quiet chuckle, slightly wary of laughing out right. Dealing with adults was tricky, after all. "Well, nice to meet'cha, Castiel. Name's Kano Shuuya--Kano's easier to say though, heheh~"
Rainy Days | Kira & Kano
Kira seemed a little surprised at Kano shaking her hand, but didn't mention it. …He sure seemed like a friendly guy.
"Ah…" ‘Meeting of fate’…? What was that supposed to mean? "Ahaha, maybe so… It still would have been nice to not meet soaking wet, though," she added jokingly. "It looked sunny and nice just a while ago, too, though. Too bad it had to rain." Kira shrugged, glancing over the guy. Kano, wasn’t it? He certainly looked like an interesting type… Man, he was about as wet as Kira, if not moreso. Must not have gotten here much earlier than herself.
"How long d’you think until the rain lets up?"
"Yeah yeah, you hear about it a lot in stories, right? Two people meet under stormy skies and are united by the threads of fate...! That sort of thing!" From behind bemused eyes he gave her a mischievous grin, non-verbally hinting he wasn't serious. Not entirely, anyway.
"In the last one I read, I think it kept raining until the next day even--Just thing about it! Having to stay overnight with a stranger, huddling for warmth with danger lurking around every corner...!" That couple had been in the forest though, never mind being just a story from the 'wistful thinking' corner of a gossip magazine.
Besides, in the city, it'd be easy enough to cover-hop until they got home.
Rainy Days | Clive & Kano
Clive shakes his head, a small chuckle making it into his voice. ”It didn’t seem like it was going to rain this heavily a while back,” He says, not even bothering to admit that he didn’t really trust weather reports.
He glances up to the grey sky and though it’s not unusual weather back home in London, he kind of dreads hearing the rain patter against the ground. But what could he do?
"How unfortunate," He speaks, stopping for a moment to let out a weary sigh. "I guess my lunch plans are wasted…"
Humming as if to say 'you don't say,' Kano looks up briefly in the same direction the other had been, thinking maybe there might've been something interesting. Greeted with the same, dull grey as ever, he lowers his head again and thinks back to the last time he ate. Did he remember to grab breakfast this morning...?
As if answering a hidden signal, his stomach chose that particular moment to let out a low grumble, complaining of his eating habits. Ah, now that he thought about it, he'd fallen asleep before he could get dinner last night, too.
After a vaguely embarrassed-sounding chuckle, he sighs dreamily. "Lunch sure does sound good right about now~ Say say, if your plans are ruined anyway, why don't we do together later?!"
Cloud... nine? | A-ya & Kano
Perhaps it was because of unfamiliarity, or the fact that he’d been too drenched in his own thoughts to consider all else, that A-ya had been unfathomably slow today. Expression akin to a deer in the headlights; the primer of his thoughts, all watered down, was the universal response of… ‘what?’ In all aspects, all forms— who was this kid, trying to initiate a conversation with him? The place he was in? What was everything, exactly? Those sorts of questions still flourished, flourishing at a more rapid rate with every abnormality that was faced.
Even with this kid standing right before him, maybe carrying answers to every question that A-ya himself hadn’t had a clue towards, the aftermath of sudden shock slowly escalated downwards into a period of attempted relaxation. ‘Attempted’ was an important highlight; whether lax or alert, interfering and sudden circumstances never failed to make things a bit harder to achieve.
Luckily, the usual doze of unneeded conversation was enough to assure A-ya that he was definitely no longer anything close to alert. Listening to every word that escaped the blonde’s lips was a pain. Sociable guys were never his cup of tea (if anyone was, actually) and their eagerness to jut anything into a full-blown conversation was something never taken in good regard! Pointless exchanges for the sake of exchanging were never interesting… from a personal standpoint, just small talk that disinterested ears couldn’t care less for. Looking visibly impartial wasn’t something that wasn’t of any concern.
…However, for as long as the talking continued, he had no choice but to listen. The situation was a bit awkward, to say the least, so it made sense to do both of them a favor and… end it as soon as possible, probably. Yeah. Self-affirmation was the best plan for now, right? And then he’d go… somewhere? Wherever he was meant to go— wait.
The conclusion that was thrown away in the midst of previous panic ricochets right back into his face. It’d probably be too much of a hassle to get around on his own. Then again, since when had he wanted to ask for help? This guy seemed like he could be helpful, despite crashing in with a bundle of trouble… but…?
Fine. Maybe it’d be fine to try and keep something going, just this once. And they’d never talk again unless they’d somehow run across each other a second time. It was a good plan. Not a plan A-ya had ever considered at first, but nonetheless, a plan.
Red meets yellow. A time for engagement.
"…Everything’s fine, really… ah," Hesitance; this wasn't flowing as well as he hoped. "Sorry about that."
The kid might not be responding right away, but the flickering his eyes were giving was all too familiar A million thoughts flying a mile a minute, and yet none of them reaching beyond the confines of one's own mind. Kano was certainly no stranger to the phenomena himself, though he would like to hope he wasn't quite as easy to read. Thoughts went by the fastest the more agitated you were, right? Maybe he was still stuck in that daze of confusion a lot of the passengers went through, or this counted as 'normal' for him, or maybe even--
A voice inside him hissed menacingly, overriding his own thought control. 'It's your fault,' it whispered, cackling at him. After all, Kano had startled him on purpose... in fact, he had been actively seeking amusement from others' discomfort in the first place. He couldn't remember what he had felt like coming off that train himself, but surely it was along the lines of terrifying. And he was making light of it. No excuses could be given. He could rationalize all he wanted that he was trying to cheer them up, but no amount of light laughter and humour could make up for his crime. It was his fault. He had made this boy uncomfortable, perhaps even to the point of panic. Only a true monster would do something like that.,,
It was quiet, but the other's voice snapped Kano back to his feet, the feeling much akin to an elastic band having been stretched as far as it could, and then letting go. Time finally unpaused, and a warm sensation on his eyes assured him no remains of previous muses would remain, at least not visually. But he'd spoken. He'd spoken and he wasn't outright pushing him away. Maybe there was still a way to salvage the damage he'd most certainly done.
"Aha, really are fragile, aren't'cha~?" That was a terrible start. "My bad, my bad; should've at least called out before jumping you like that, right?" Better... "Well, where ya headed to? I can probably take ya! Your outfit says the school, but what'cha think you're gunna do with a suitcase at school? Heheh..."
Wait. Did the school here even have a uniform...? Kano had never bothered to show up--actually, he wasn't sure if he was even enrolled for that matter. An uncomfortable pang of uncertainty washed over him for a moment before he squashed it, covering for it with a step back as he threw his arms behind his head.
"Ah, but then, you probably wouldn't wanna go off with some stranger though. Name's Kano--Kano Shuuya. Kano'll do just fine though. Aaaaand, what should I call you~?"
Aprt #2 Suit #06 | Chihiro & Kano
The building wasn't too intimidating, but Kano had been stopped in front of it for the past little while now, fingers aching as the streetlamps flickered on. He shifted his weight for the umpteenth time and adjusted his grip on the box of belongings he held. Today was supposed to be moving day, but he had managed to drag it out into the night. Maybe it was the unsettling feeling that he couldn't quite place where it was he was moving from, whether it was far away or close by, or whether he was leaving anyone behind. He felt like he stood before the jaws of a giant fiend of fate, and while he would have to be swallowed eventually, some self-preservation instinct in him still resisted.
The mask constructed itself on instinct--probably--and painting over his nervous disposition with an illusion of calm purpose. Though Shuuya might have wanted to hang around outside a little longer, Kano forcibly launched himself into the belly of the beast, wry grin of resignation hidden under his eyes.
Apartment 2 was sought after for its rustic approach, holding forte in both simplicity and relaxing atmosphere--or at least, according to the brochure. Indeed, the hallways didn't have much in the way of decorations, save for a potted plant here or there. With his single box filled primarily with a change of clothes, Kano had to admit it suited him.
He found the door to 'his' room was already ajar a crack, and logical reasoning told him his roommate must have missed closing it all the way. If the door swung inwards, he could have kicked it open and gotten an explosive first impression!... but since when had his luck been that good. He stared down from the doorknob to his box, too heavy to support with only one hand.
The idea had already worked its way to his motor functions before he could plan it much further, impulse one of his greater flaws. With a crash, he carelessly tossed the box forwards, effectively scattering its contents as it shut the door closed with a slam. "A~ah! Whoopsie daises~" he called out in a slightly too loud of voice, cheshire grin spreading across his face.
"Ah…" Kira looked towards the stranger who spoke, brushing her wet bangs to the side and out of her eyes. She shrugged in response, returning the guy’s smile with a small one of her own.
"I guess not, ehe…" Man, her choice of outfit wasn’t so good today. It was a simple white dress, but the rain had made it wet and somewhat translucent. She adjusted the dress in an attempt to hide this fact, at the same time holding her also-soaked bookbag over her chest. While she did think such a clothing error was pretty sexy on other girls(most notably those with large breasts), Kira didn’t enjoy it in the least.
Trying to bring her mind off of her clothes, she decided to try and strike up a conversation while it was still raining.
"So, uh… What’s your name? I mean— I’m Kira." She hesitated, but held out a hand for the other to shake. She quickly put it back down though, unsure, since her hand was still wet with the rest of her.
He had no idea why she was fidgeting so much. Was she... cold? Maybe... scared of thunder? Or... in a hurry? He blinked, was about to open his mouth when it clicked. Now that looked at her, that she had chosen an unfortunate outfit for today's weather was painfully obvious. Normally, he would be snickering at her situation, but she looked so uncomfortable...
"And I'm Kano; the pleasure's all mine~" He reached out to grab her retreating hand, giving it a good shake before letting go, grinning all the while. "Wish we could've met under better circumstances. Or maybe these are perfect circumstances for a meeting of fate!"
As he spoke, he activated his ability, masking red eyes under its influence. If she was going to be miserably wet, then he wouldn't dry until she could.

If there were ever a place you wouldn't expect to find Kano, it would be at the library. The nerds scattered about, the responsibility to keep your mouth shut, the musty smell of old books and out-of-date computers... And yet here he was, looking idly at the shelves of books. If only that ice cream hadn't been so tempting, he would've still had his magazine budget for the week. But alas, 'twas not meant to be, so he had come looking for some other means of reading entertainment.
As he reached out for book, like some cheesy drama, another hand came suddenly into view and met him there. A pronounced moment passed. Then he jerked his hand back, instantly zeroing in on his new source of entertainment. "A~ah, I guess this means we're married now! We've even got similar tastes in book! Well, please look after me! Heh."
Cloud... nine? | A-ya & Kano
A day off, and an unfamiliar populace providing absolutely nothing to do. To the general populace, densely filled with devoted busybodies, the mere thought sounded nothing short to a rare commodity. Hard to come by, and cherished upon attainment— by a cynic’s definition, a shoddy excuse of a dream.
Harboring such a train of though was pessimistic, A-ya knew it well. But really, knowing zilch about this city nor what he was meant to do, what else could he do? Look at the bright side? Those were personal mantras meant to give false confidence; foolish hope wasn’t what he was looking for today. The target was an answer. Somehow. With those hazy memories still clinging and clanging within the depths of his consciousness, perhaps one day life would be generous enough to provide with some sort of understanding.
…Or so he hoped.
The name was Hajima. The city’s name, to be exact; what was said to be his destination. Why exactly this particular was his destination in the first place, he didn’t know. And moreover, the incessant bumps felt from the suitcase he’d somehow had in his hands with the combination of a neatly ironed academy uniform, (was it a school? his old school..? maybe?) he had no idea why those were there either! The more A-ya pondered the irregularities, the more thrown off his disposition came.
As a result, it was a break in focus. Or rather, more attention drifted away from the priorities already broken. His apartment? School? Living requirements? Every second that passed drew him to the wonders of the unknown, the need and thirst to know! The fact that this mundane life he’d always, always despised became something unknown and unpleasant and—
“Eh?" Taken aback— by a sudden push? Force? Someone else? God… for an unexpected meeting to occur at this time; who was that? No, more importantly, what struck A-ya so hard that he was rendered so incapable of paying attention to his surroundings?!
…
Well, not like there was anything to do… now? Stand there? Stare? Apologise, perhaps…? A sudden, on-the-spot situation fate had given to a boy incapable of having one?! Thanks. Thank you so much.
For all the time that he had been living in this city (and really, he hadn't the foggiest idea how much that accumulated to), it had been decided that the train station was the most peculiar. The trains came irregularly, sometimes many in the span of an hour, sometimes weeks apart, and the passengers... they were always carrying suitcases.
Where did they all come from? Why here? Did anyone ever leave? Kano had only ever seen the train unloading--if there was a loading platform, he had yet to find it. Besides which, that would require the desire to leave, and something always told him to stay. Every time he'd entertained the idea of sneaking through the gates to board the unloading train, that feeling would return. That he should stay. That this was the only place that could answer his questions. And so he did.
Still, the passengers who got off were the most amusing to watch. Some marched forwards with purpose, usually straight for the apartment complex. Others lagged behind, glancing around trying to get a sense of direction. Then there were those that walked around as if in a daze, and found themselves subjected to his boredom.
Today's target: one very tired looking, uniform clad teen. In fact, Kano wasn't entirely certain he was a daze-walker, seeing how the vacant look in his eyes appeared only natural from under his bags. Well, wouldn't be much fun to change targets now.
A playful pat on the shoulder was not received well--or rather, most excellently--and he almost felt bad for startling the kid. ...Yeah okay, no he wasn't. But the awkward silence that followed, however...
"You... okay there?" He waved his hand in front of his face, hoping for any reaction. "Did I hit too hard? Didn't realize you were so fragile! Maybe I should take your luggage too; wouldn't want you falling back down the hill, eheh!"

Rain, rain, go away, come again when I remember my umbrella... He sighed in good humour, shaking loose a few stray drops from his hair. If it had just been a little sprinkle, he would've popped up his hood and continued on his merry way, but nooo, it had to be a whole sheet of water coming down. At least he'd found cover, leaking as it was. And now... to wait... Kano's least favourite activity.
Slicing through the monotonous dripping came the loud splashing of another joining his ranks. "Not a fan of listening to weather reports either, huh~?" He flashed them a warm smile in welcome, as if perhaps he could dry them with it before exaggeratedly flinching away, soaking as they were.
