The table is where you see the women work. The kitchen is their domain and their product is laid before us: rice, beans, manioc, potatoes, beef, chicken, suckling pig, pumpkin, pasta and corn. This buffet is blessed and the priest serves himself first, followed by the foreigners and the rest of the men. People sit round, with plates in hand and tuck in. It reminds me of a child’s birthday party or funeral in Ireland, people take small portions and move about the space chatting with others.
This is the audio guide to accompany my installation in le Casier. Le Casier is a Guillaume Clermont project and part of his doctorat in ERG, Bruxelles. The installation is visible from 4th-15th December 2017 more information here: http://www.lecasier.be/contact.html

What is a mosquito net?
The best protection there is against mosquitos and the disease which they spread. Unfortunately the nets are for rarer than the mosquitos.

Fazendas are big farms some would be bigger than townships. Most of these fazendas are a good bit out. 30-40 mins down the main road then it’s dirt tracks, with cow ribs and potholes till your coccyx is numb. Out here the wealthy and faithful have huge freezers and small chapels.
The priest’s visit is an occasion where we can get the gossip from town and the other farms. The chapels and the private altars are reminders not just of next world but of civilisation.
O Bezerro
Like everything in life the blessing ain’t for free, it’s a shakedown. Fr Marty is looking for calves, os bezerros, for the annual auction. It reminds me of being an artist, asking people for money, supplies, possibilities for something that will not be of direct benefit to them. In this day and age people find that more and more difficult to understand. Some give money, some suckling pigs (deliciso), some chickens but most calves.
This is where the mission becomes about community building because once the calves are promised, they have to be collected, kept somewhere and then the auction in itself is an event, a party, a moment where people come together. The mission plays a cultural role here, helping people to be apart of something.
These are the dirt roads which make up 90% of the roads on the Fronteira Agricola. The bus, the milk truck, the pick ups and the motorbikes go down these roads. There are no ditches along the road, so when the rain comes it either runs off, leaving the cattle ribs that ruin the suspension and make my back ache. Sometimes the rain just sits there, and the vehicle grinds to halt while you have to choose whether to wait or to wade on through.
While they have a new school, the school bus is not from this millennium.
This was one of the first houses on the settlement built with the wood cleared from the land. Life is simple but still you have to have a satellite.
These are children of settlement set up in 1996. Their parents fought and some died for this land out in the middle of nowhere. Even today few come to visit them.
We were here to take some photos of the houses for a friend of Gerry’s who is doing her thesis on the effects of land reform.
O Pessoal
If you want to buy something what do you do? Well, normally you go to the shop you decide what you want, you pay for it and you leave. I was looking for fabric to have some shirts made.
Everyone knows your supposed to wear gloves, masks and protective clothes with these pesticides but do you see how small those filters are and how big the field is?
