In 1866, Giuseppe De Nittis, having arrived in Florence, joined the Macchiaioli movement.

The term was coined in 1862 by a critic for the Gazzetta del Popolo, who used it pejoratively to describe these painters (literally "stainers," from the Italian macchia, meaning "stain") who opposed academic art. Originally, this movement, around 1855, marked a realistic revival of Italian painting and was deeply linked to the Risorgimento.
