Firefly concept sketches!
ā ā ā
Firefly, as a character, is objectively one of my favorites to draw + construct all around.
I wanted to tie in a cyber-punkesque feel to her, especially since sheās so unique compared to the rest of the crew.
I wanted to make her very angular, very sharp and pointed like a triangle, as a lot of @teamstarfallofficialās designs rely on softer shapes, usually circles or rectangles.
One thing I donāt show very often, is Firefly with her hair down.
Her hair is pin straight save for an incidental cowlick, and I imagine she gels it down.
I like to imagine that her hair catches fire sometimes and she just rolls with it because she finds it so funny.
for firefly, what are your cybernetics like? In the sense of are they similar to any preexisting tech, or are they completely unique?
I don't talk about my body much. ... but, uh... dad used some old car parts and scrap metal. lotsa synthetic skin, and some synthetic organs... my old man's what you call a revolutionary.
...You're made of car parts!? What's the engine like? How much horsepower?
ohhh here we go. Nothing like that, you nerd.
sorry-
Though I do use a lot of what cars need to function. Save for gasoline, of course. Think of me like... an electric veichle that naturally makes the fuel it needs to function. Eating, drinking and other things set me right, but I suffer from shit like dry eye, and need to use a compound to recreate my stomach acid if shit fucks up. ...it is a corrosive, after all.
... Ted, get me a pen and pad right NOW-
goddammit

Okay so, opinions on
HOMESTUCK - The Animated Pilot
Right out of the bat, I like what theyāre going for; I'm not fully sure that theyāre achieving it. Let me explain.
Theyāre retelling a story that has already been told, and has been told in a very specific way, so they need to tell it in a completely new way to adapt it to a different medium (animation), which works with different rules for pacing and visual exposure of information. That is a big challenge, and I applaud them for handling it the way they did. They are using a lot of very original and creative tools to convey all the info thatās originally contained in chats, narration under the visuals, and back-and-forth between points of view of the different characters.
I find the inclusion of mobile phones, cutting the screen in half to show different characters at the same time, and chat-like speech bubbles manifesting when someone on the other line is saying something, very clever. It gives this same convoluted, multiple chats at once āpesteringā of the protagonist vibe as the original, but it is different in its own way. tho personally, there's too many variants of the character bubble, (acurate, full body cartoon, little half body chiby and only head). To me consistency is very important in world building, it adds stability it makes this resourses recognizable as a thing of their own and because when you break something established it means something.
I also like how we begin the story with WV in the bunker; itās different from the original, but from the perspective of a new viewer, it hooks you up, it sells you this idea that thereās nothing normal about this game these kids are getting involved with. It has this kind of aura of āthereās something moreā that the original comic saves for later, while the pilot shows it to you right from the start but doesn't let you know what exactly youāre seeing.
John and the other kids being aware of the narrator, I don't know if itās a choice I can get behind. I think it would've made more sense to me if John maybe acted just like in the pilot, but then when his friends asked who he was talking to, John made excuses or said he was talking to himself. For the exileās existence to be a mystery for them completely
The narrator does help ease all the explanation of who John is, what is going on, what a silladex is, and how it works pretty well and organically tho, I like that.
That being said, cool resources aside, the first half glosses over every single joke in the comic or exposure about the environment John or his friends are at. Thereās no mention of how much John hates cakes (other than casually mentioning his dad is baking a lot), his love for pranks, or mention of his very important Sassacre book, how much he hates his dadās obsession with harlequins and how theyāre everywhere, disdain for his fatherās gift of a giant harlequin, panic about dumping his nannaās ashes on the ground and failing miserably at putting them back using the sylladex. Speaking of the sylladex, all sylladex shenanigans were omitted or, at best, left as background noise while John talks on the phone and interacts with everything around him very fast. So everything that builds John Egbertās characterāhis clumsiness, likes, dislikes, everything in his house that tells you who he isāis missing.
(I understand why "[S]John: Play haunting piano refrain" wasnāt there, but it still hurt)
The same happens a little bit with Dave and Rose as well; as we gloss over Daveās sylladex mode, you can barely catch his explanation on a strife specibus before the whole interaction is over and you can understand what they did or how important that was. Also about that scene, I get it, animation is meant to be expressive, and the original was way more chill, but still, theyāre completely different characters during it.Ā
As for Rose, sheās there, and stuff is happening, but itās empty, very fast visuals, a violin playing here, a meteor there, the figure of her mother in the hallway, and sheās gone. No buildup or slow transition into who she is for a moment. (Also, it might be just me, but Rose and Dave are too happy. To me, they're supposed to be more chill and serious to contrast with John and Jade's more cheerful and silly personalities. They act too much like how they are supposed to be at the very end of Homestuck, after their character growth. Especially Dave, heās supposed to be playing into this whole cool-dude act, chill, better, and wiser than everyone, and this is just a second John almost).
So, to me, John and Jadeās characterizations are great, Roseās is alright, but Dave is a completely different character. He's constantly smiling from the get go, when his whole introduction was "this guy is too cool to even introduce himself"
Another thing that bothered me is how the whole deal of getting the beta is handled. Itās supposed to be the very center of this whole thing. The beta arrival and John's birthday, both marked on the calendar, are supposed to emphasize how important that is, but everything happens so fast and these kids are saying so many things you donāt get to register, you can miss it.
Iām not saying they shouldāve made the animation completely accurate to the comic; itās just the feeling of urgency and the importance of the beta isnāt there; itās just something he goes and gets in the middle of constant rambling with everyone.
Itās like everything good happens while John absentmindedly talks with his friends, and nothing is worth stopping for or paying attention to, which is what the comic thrives on: paying attention and gathering info.
But all of this is the first half; the second half is when, to me, things take a turn for the better. Since we are over the part where John is inside his house, where all the exposition of who he is, who his father is, and why the things in his house are the way they are, weāre no longer glossing over stuff or speedrunning the house tour while everyone talks over it. The moment john sets foot outside, the conversation with jade is dinamic, the searching for the beta gets on track, we see the two pacages, the narrator gives his awesome intro (tho it sucked it was interrupted before it got to the cool part) dave shows john the meteor wich gives us now a sense of urgency even if we donāt know what it means (donāt know how he knew tho and shouldn't happen until after the game is on but whatever), we acnoledge the giant HOMESTUCK banner in the sky thatās not a methafor, itās literally there, and random arm and then we get the reinterpretation of John and Dadās strife, which is way more destructive and anime like than the original, but since what made the original special was the posibility to interact with the site, this one has to be special in itās own unique way. All these events are kinda different from how they happened in the original, since some happened way later, but again, understandably, it makes everything dynamic and engaging.
And from there it closes on John installing the beta and giving us this sense of how something so much bigger than them is taking place, with a montage of events that have taken place, are taking place, and will take place, but all at once at the same time in paradox space. Something that sells you on how this is only the beginning of something they canāt even fathom, and itās coming for them, and it canāt be stopped. That part was really exiting.
I liked it in its more dynamic moments; I disliked it when it was supposed to explain things because all construction of the universe and character's personalities were too fast to matter or be understandable.
It reminds me of the first episode of āThe Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,ā because I hated the first episode; it was messy, everyone was talking over everyone and it didnāt stop long enough on anything in particular for me to understand or care, and it didnāt make me want to watch any more of it, but I did, because I knew the following episodes were actually better. Thatās kinda how i feel about this first half of the pilot. Itās rushed and itās not fun, but once that part is out of the way it gets better and think it'll will become an amazing show if it takes a more "adventure" type of aproach and it stops rushing dialog and skiping info.
----------------------------------------------
So in short, to me, first half was bad, second half was great. Maybe the first half should've needed to be longer and let people know John, crack a couple jokes, but as an animator, I understand that could make the project impossible to produce. John and Jadeās characterization is on point, Roseās is alright, Daveās is bad The animation is beautiful, so are the backgrounds, music, and voice acting. The resources and creative tools theyāre implementing are genius. The creative liberties theyāre taking make sense. I wish they find a better way to convey information
Good pilot. Hope they make more.

Rosemarie, could you tell us more about Manuallans?
ā¦hoping youāre all ready for a long one. This is based on my knowledge, so I will share what I know as fact.
So, to start, manuallans are not much like humans, animallians, or many other species at all. Their forms are made of energy, not biological matter, that extends out from their ācoresā to give them the appearance of a fluffy/furry body. This āfurā is condensed energy fibres that act as a vessel to channel and regulate their energy. In saying this, they lack specific organsā like stomachs or true lungsā but their body structures can still shape themselves like limbs, tails, wings or other features.
Their ācoreā is essentially their heart, a concentrated centre to their power which pulses in tune with their energy type or emotional state. They have no mouths, as they communicate telepathically and donāt consume food in the traditional sense. They tend to have a standard bipedal body structure like most humanoids, two arms and two legs, though additional traits can vary based on their energy specializations.
With them being energy-based, itās safe to correctly assume that their vibrancy is a good indicator of how they are in terms of health and emotional well-being. Vibrant colourations and soft exteriors indicate a very happy and healthy manuallan, but darker colours and bristly, rigid fur alerts to underlying unwellness, isolation, or distress.
Speaking of the energy types! There are quite a few distinct attunements among them.
Sound-Attuned: Sound-attuned Manuallans are typically pale-hued, if not just white. They have wing or ear shaped appendages that help them navigate through echolocation!
Thermal-Attuned: Thermal-attuned Manuallans have a hue range from deep red to vibrant orange, radiating warmth like a campfire and often bearing tails that flicker like wisps of a flame.
Kinetic-Attuned: Kinetic-attuned Manuallans are shades of vibrant, electric blue or deep violet. Their forms tend to be sleek, with appendages like blades or fins for rapid movement and aerodynamic speed.
Light-Attuned: Light-attuned Manuallans can be shining golds or soft yellows, shimmering like starlight in dark nights and able to bend their forms in radiant prismatic displays.
Electric-Attuned: Electric-attuned Manuallans are typically neon greens and cyan hues, with their fur crackling with sparks of quick energy, and faint light trails following where they move.
Gravitational-Attuned: Gravitational-attuned Manuallans are indigo and navy hued, with swirling waves of energy patterns across their forms, ones that even distort what is around them (if you pay attention, of course).
Chemical-Attuned: Chemical-attuned Manuallans are vibrant and highly unpredictable in their colour, shifting between hues like humans change their clothes, and their fluffy bodies let off reactive mist as normality.
Even with these energy distinctions, each manuallan can also choose to present themselves in feminine, masculine, nonbinary and genderfluid manners. Their anatomy is malleable, allowing for shifts in expression over time, but there are some consistent traits among them.
Masculine Manuallans have taller, broader forms with rigid or spiky fur, like windswept tufts or jagged edges. Their energy structure is denser in the upper body. And to top it off, horns, ridges, and crown-like structures are more common for the masculine-aligned, acting as energy conduits for them. Their core energy manifests in deeper hues and pulses in slow, controlled waves.
Feminine Manuallans have more compact, rounded forms, with softer and flowy fur patterns that gently ripple and flow with their energy. Their energy is concentrated more evenly through their forms, making their movements smoother and graceful. Wing-like structures and sensory structures (like ribbon-like tails or floating energy strands) are more common. Their core energy is brighter, shimmering with fluid pulses that fluctuate more drastically with their emotions.
Nonbinary Manuallans have a mix of traits from both feminine and masculine forms. These trait mixes can be symmetrical or even entirely unique. Fur patterns can shift between soft and jagged, sometimes being asymmetrical or making very interesting geometric patterns. Nonbinary energy cores can be multi-tonal or gradient in appearance, fluctuating more strongly than those more aligned with typical binary gender structures. Finally, their appendages can be more abstract, fluid, or otherwiseā with examples including floating orbs of energy, spiral structures, or segmented extensions to their beings.
Genderfluid Manuallans are the most adaptable of allā with bodies that shift with their self-perception, emotional state, and energy resonance! They can shift their energy structure to be like any of the three previously mentionedā such as having a masculine, upper body concentration one day, and a feminine balance and soft fur the next! Their fur texture, appendages, and structure all change to signal their view of their gender alignment at any given moment. Their core energy is the most unpredictable and variant, sometimes pulsing in multiple rhythms or flickering between colours based on how they feel about themselves and their identity! The one thing that will set them apart from other gender identities will be how their forms are more ethereal and flowing, to accommodate for their malleable expressions.
Being energy-based beings, there are some conditions common to them that a human would not be used to. Mainly, corruption. It sounds evil, but itās closer to human mental conditions such as depression or stress related disorders. A Manuallan is deeply tied to their chosen purpose, and without being connected to their lifeās purpose, their forms may weaken and suffer. Their fur colours may darken and desaturate, becoming brittle and sparse. Their cores become unstable with erratic flickers or cracks. They may even manifest a āmouthā, a void in their face to signal their energy starvation. They become erratic, aggressive or withdrawn from peers, making their natural telepathic communication difficult. Thankfully, I can brute force a way into circumventing this, but it isnāt pleasant.
Manuallans do not usually have typical names, being titled by their roles. Examples could include The Guardian, The Scholar, The Weaver, etc.
These titles define their identity, and oftentimes Manuallans take great pride in their role. However, informally or among close friends, nicknames based on personality traits are commonplace. After becoming one with this hidden grove of lovely beings, the ones I called family granted me a title, and I granted them my kindās names in turn.
Letās look through some examples.
First, my brother, Taliesin. He is a masculine-aligned electric-attuned Manuallan, with dark, dulled green fur and the title of āThe Rogueā. Oftentimes he sparks with static when worked up, but he tries his best to be gentle when it counts. I know he can get better, and that is why I keep trying my best to support him. He isnāt the icon of health, but he does his best. Thatās why I havenāt stopped caring.
My father, Acacius, is somewhat of a masculine leaning Manuallan, though his identity still sits among the non-binary spectrum. He has a light attunement, with long, bright golden fur. Iād recommend getting a chance to speak with him at least once. Despite being known to some as āThe Rebelā, his personality doesnāt fit that description at all. Acacius more of a gentle giant than that word suggests.
Of course, I know more Manuallansā like Sapphira, who I am very close toā but I wouldnāt want to keep rambling on forever. Iām tired out from figuring out how to word this! ^^
If youād all like, I can answer more questions about them later, or you could even ask yourself! Iām very excited to hear about it all. To all, have safe travels, until we speak again.

one of our old characters had a NOTORIOUS amount of fanart (mainly because the person who owned the character had a lot of artist friends) but ever since she left our team we've slowed to a crawl on that
