on safety

we live in a cultural moment that is obsessed with safety. we see this on the Left, certainly, with its ever increasing intensity toward the production of cultural products, spaces, and languages that are “safe” as in free of trauma and oppression. we see it as well in the Right, with its xenophobia and terror of progressive change, and in the so-called Centre as it supports the invasion of surveillance technologies and regulations on our public and private lives. it makes sense to want to be safe. we live in a dangerous world, and we have survived terrible things. life is frightening, especially now. but safety, and the control that we attempt to generate it from, is not the answer - or at least, i have realized that it can’t be for me. there is a part of me that is always screaming for more security, to be swept up by a handsome prince who will bear me away to a locked tower in a palace in a walled garden. i yearn for solitude, and comfort, and protection. but these are things i cannot have, and certainly not with any guarantee of permanence. the world is burning. the planet is dying. still, we must grow. i am wondering if the question we should be asking is not “how can we be safe?” but rather “how can we thrive despite the presence of danger?”

But the way I see it, journalists don’t exist in a vacuum. They are human beings, living and working in a very human environment. And that humanity is essential in relating to their stories. When you lose your humanity, you lose any kind of journalistic integrity you have left.
