Getting that ‘I-Got-Eight-Hours-of-Sleep-Last-Night’ Glow
This semester I had the pleasure of becoming a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista, a fashion blog for college fashion inspiration. Each month I write articles showcasing trends I find on my college campus, or a look of my own. While fashion is the main topic on CollegeFashionista, Style Gurus also report on beauty trends. This month I shared a fresh-faced makeup look, perfect for any sleep-deprived college student (aren’t we all?). While makeup has always been a big part of my life, I’ve been neglecting this topic here on Nail Polish & Lace. Since I began incorporating lifestyle posts on my blog last fall, the makeup posts have been moved to the back burner. Writing this month’s article for CollegeFashionista reignited my interest and reminded me just how fun it is to talk all things beauty! This article was definitely my all time favorite, so I thought I’d continue the fun here, on my personal blog. If you’re interested in reading my original article, you can find it here!
Ideally, I could use nine hours of sleep every night, but by the time I squeeze in all my classes, a paper on organizational behavior, an hour-long accounting problem, a group project meeting, studying for my marketing exam, three meals, a challenging workout (yeah right), and the Bachelor, I’m lucky to have gotten six hours of sleep. Lucky for me, I’ve got about 12 drawers of makeup (a.k.a. magic), to make up for the lost beauty sleep. Here are my favorite tips, tricks, and products to achieve a bright, awake, and healthy face:
1. Hide the bags, they’re a dead giveaway. After applying your foundation, use a highlighting concealer at least two shades lighter than your foundation under your eyes. To avoid that Donald-Trump-tanning-bed-goggle-tan look, make sure you’re blending all the way down to the apples of your cheeks. I find that liquid concealers work best for this, by keeping your delicate under-eye area hydrated. My favorite affordable product to achieve this look is Maybelline’s Instant Rewind Concealer.
2. Bring light to your eyes. A simple highlighting eyeshadow can make all the difference when striving for that wide awake look. I tend to reach for a light, pinky-toned eyeshadow with a lot of shimmer (no sparkle, just shimmer). Shimmer will attract more light, without making you look like a total disco ball. Apply to the inner corners of your eyes and blend lightly down to your lower lashes, staying within the inner third of your eye. I like to do this once I’ve completed my eyeshadow look, right before applying eyeliner and mascara. Also swipe some highlighting shadow under the brow for a little extra lift.
3. Add come color and dimension to your face. A little bronzer and blush will give you some color and liveliness. Make sure to apply these products with a light hand. We are going for a natural look here.
4. Get that healthy glow. I totally believe in the glow. Whether it’s an external or internal thing, a radiant glow always seems to shine bright from the complexions of healthy and happy people. My favorite product to achieve the glow is Benefit’s High Beam. I like to apply a few swipes of this to the tops of my cheekbones, nose, and cupids bow. I then just use my fingers to lightly blend the shimmer into my skin.
While the under-eye bags will forever be a signature accessory for any college student, and some may even refer to them as a badge of honor, I find that a little makeup can give me a pep in my step and the confidence to take on the day.
Let me know how these tips and products worked for you! And make sure to check out my related post on CollegeFashionista.
