people really don't often have an intuitive understanding of how pressure vessel leaks in vacuum work i guess. air does not instantly leave a container with a proportionally small hole, those air molecules aren't gonna break the sound barrier traveling to a lower pressure area. think of a water tower tank that you poke a hole in the bottom of. the water will travel out of the tank at the same speed, whether the hole is a millimeter wide or 3 meters. the proportional size of the hole determines how long water will remain in the tank. A pressure vessel with a life support system and a hole is like pouring water into the top of that leaking water tower. If it's a tiny leak, you might be able to keep the water topped off effortlessly with a garden hose. For a larger one, you may gradually lose water (or outside the metaphor, air pressure) as you run out capacity or reserves to keep it full. If you just cut off the whole bottom of the tank, no amount of water you add at the top could possibly keep tank full. Spacecraft leaks are not good but a small hole is not a smash cut to total vacuum.
