Nsibidi is an ideographic writing system used across southeast Nigeria to southwest Cameroon for 💯s of years. I’m told it was even taught in schools in Igbo land before the war. The first time I ever heard of it was 2017….while at a museum…in Washington, DC. I was like how the fuck did I go to school in Igbo land but the first time I’m hearing bout a precolonial Igbo writing system is in a US museum??? (S/o to the work of Chike Aniakor and Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi) As soon as I saw nsibidi I fell in love with it and knew I wanted to put it on my body in some way. Ududo.🕷🕷🕷spider. Symbols of the divine feminine, receptivity and creativity. You can eat all you want if you build your web and are willing to wait. In Igbo cosmology Ududo Okwanka wove a web that created the universe and that web speaks to our interconnectedness. Last week, he announced on Instagram he’d been studying astrology for years and is reading charts for $30. I was like, "Uhm, can this bitch really read charts," and, like, "Okay, I wanna support, let's see." I just spent 90 minutes Facetiming with Odinaka as he read my astrological chart. It was the best use and most soothing time I spent during this self-quarantining moment. Most of you know that I am not new to astrology, I have been following it since I was in high school. But, even given that, I learned so much from this reading about astrology--and about my self. It put into perspective hardships and other events I had experienced the past several years and oriented me for the new few. It also allowed me to clearly identify and consciously connect with my strengths as an artist and person and gave me clarity on more complicated career terrain that I'm traversing. But, the fact that Odi's reading grounded these current events in ways that allowed me to make connections with my childhood, family, and love and relationships, was arguably better than any therapy I got in the last year. We definitely got the time and if you got the money, slide in this boy's DM's and get him to read your chart. I call @pccfilms a dream architect. We met last summer in the photobooth of a friend's bar. 3 months later he told me he was making his first feature film and wanted me to be in it. I'd never done a movie before, I'd never done anything with Peter before. He'd made some cool music videos for rappers I liked like Saba and Towkio. I said yes off vibes. We rehearsed our asses off and drove to the mountains of Asheville North Carolina for a few weeks. 6-7 of us slept on air mattresses in a 2 bedroom cabin and made art. 10 month's later the movie's done and most miraculously we're all great friends now.
