@trollsistrolls Gotta be honest, I love this perspective! Includes a few things I've thought about before, and expands on those ideas really well. I love his character, especially as an eldest sibling myself. The only thing I would really ask is - what would you say to when he says 'the missions the mission' after brozone's argument? Curious to hear your thoughts on that. I'd imagine maybe he just at that point doesn't think it's possible for them to get back together.

“The mission’s the mission” = control through purpose
When JD says it, it’s right after BroZone starts falling apart again.
They’re arguing, emotions are everywhere, the old wounds are reopening, and JD just snaps back into structure.
“The mission’s the mission.” Translation: “Don’t feel. Focus. Fix it.” Because feelings? Feelings are what broke them last time.
So he builds a wall made out of leadership, humor, and goal-setting, and hides behind it. If he can turn this into a mission, then it’s not a mess. If he can make this about saving Floyd, then it’s not about losing his brothers all over again.
💔 It’s not coldness, it’s fear
People read JD as bossy or detached, but honestly? That line screams fear. He’s terrified that if he slows down, if he lets the emotions in, everything will collapse again. He already lost them once. He’s not going to risk it a second time. So he does what he’s always done: he keeps moving. Keep the mission alive, keep the band together, keep pretending that this time it’ll work.
Because if the 'mission' fails, then what is he left with? Just him. Alone. Again. Because let's be fair, not Branch, not Bruce, and not Clay were happy to see him, but he still kept going.
🎶 The echo of BroZone’s first breakup
The wild part? “The mission’s the mission” is exactly the mindset that broke BroZone in the first place. JD pushed them too hard, not because he wanted fame, but because he thought success would make the pain worth it. So when he says this years later, it’s like he’s haunting himself. The same drive, the same desperate need to keep control. He hasn’t grown past it until this movie forces him to.

Branch used to live by the same logic, just in a darker way. “Stay hidden. Stay alive. Don’t feel. Don’t sing.”

They’re both emotional armor, two different ways of saying, “If I stop, I’ll have to feel everything I’ve lost.”

That’s the real translation. He’s not choosing the mission over them. He’s choosing it because he thinks it’s the only way to keep them. It’s tragic because he’s trying to lead with logic when what they need is love. He can’t say “I’m scared,” so he says “The mission’s the mission.” He can’t say “I missed you,” so he says “Let’s get the band back together.” John Dory doesn’t know how to be vulnerable, so he performs leadership instead.
🌈 By the end? He learns the truth.
Because the whole movie is about this exact line being broken open.
He realizes the mission was never the mission. It was them.
The brothers. The family. The connection he’s been chasing through every song and every plan.
By the end, “The mission’s the mission” becomes “The family’s the family.” And that? That’s the most John Dory thing ever.
