i just wanna say that prof hotchkiss is an awesome character. yeah, she’s quirky and funny and entertaining, but she is so important. history is such a boy’s club even today-usually three quarters of my classmates are male and more often than not the professor is, too-so to have a female professorial historian represented is really cool. 

and not only that, hotchkiss has dedicated her career to salvaging the reputation of a woman who has been villainized by male historians (you wanna bet the critics who panned hotchkiss’ book were men?) because she was powerful and she didn’t just submit to her husband like royal consorts were expected to. just this past semester i brought up marie in my colonial america class and why i respected her and a male classmate who i wasn’t even directing my words to spun around and began to lecture me on why she was a terrible human being and why i should hate her. this guy who was supposed to have seen me as a future historian capable of forming my own views-an equal-was trying to convince me to drop my opinion of this long-dead woman and adopt his. if that isn’t a double-edged sword i don’t know what is. but this is exactly why women historians-particularly feminist women historians-being represented is so very important. 

(if you don’t already respect the hell out of this character please imagine her getting her degree in the 50s/60s when she was probably the only woman in her classes and had to deal with harassment but she stuck with it because she’d have been damned if she let some hooligans tell her she wasn’t a real historian and she showed them all when she graduated and went on to become a professor all right bye i’m out)
