for the fanfic, i was thinking of like the reader running into askeladds band by chance and they just take them because they can make medicine (very useful) and for slave trading if needed (very useful). so they kinda get thrust between canute and thorfinn and when everyone settles in a village after a raid the reader takes the advantage to look for herbs and make medicine and canute like runs into them and they just start talking about stuff, like the reader teaching him about what each herb is helpful for and how they make the medicine and such

Twelve months. For the past year you’ve been nothing more than a slave. You were taken by a band of Danes who raided your village and dragged you north, away from all you’ve ever grown to know. Using your knowledge in medicinal herbs to aid them, and if need be, to sell you of for a quick profit. But you figured you ought to be at least somewhat grateful for them keeping you around for much longer than you expected.

The days start to blend after a while. The trip to Wales along with your current travel to the Kingdom of Brycheiniog is becoming dreadful. Unfortunately, the chill of the snow must’ve started to get to you. The cascade of symptoms seemed to hit you like a storm. You've been more tired than usual; your body's been aching horribly, along with the draining fatigue you're feeling.

Cold weather is never good on a sickly body, so it's no help that Askeladd has decided to spend some time in a snowy Welsh Village. It doesn’t take long for them to go rummaging through the houses so you figure you might as well go and do the same. It would be best if you take care of this sickness before it gets any worse.

As you walk through the thick snow you try to push your nerves aside, your mind thinking of any and every worst-case scenario. Like, if you couldn’t find any medicinal herbs and this little sickness grew worse. Would they leave you here or continue to drag you wherever they went. You’ve decided you would go and search through the houses like you said you would. The snow beneath you crunches as the wind blows a frigid chill over you.

It's a fairly small village but they've got to have something that will do you some good, right? You move through the expanse of the snowy ground and snowed over paths. You come up on one of the houses, nudging open the door to the already rampaged home. You figured that would be the case, since the others were scouting for food.

Once you step in you can feel that it’s slightly warmer than the outside atmosphere. You get back to your search for the herbs within the house. Not long after you’ve found a decent number of herbs. A few sprigs of yarrow, willow bark and some twigs of elder. Hopefully they will ease the upcoming illness. You decide to search through some more of the cabins for anything that might be beneficial.

You walk through the village with your herbs in hand, and you can’t help but notice the hunger that’s growing on you. There wasn’t any luck trying to find food in the other cabins, considering they’ve already been rummaged through.

As you continue walking, you notice someone up ahead. The man with the cone shaped head and Thorfinn with a rabbit slung over his shoulder. Which only seems to spur your hunger further. As you walk closer you can hear them conversing. That man Ragnar said something about it not healthy to eat only meat and that Thorfinn would have to borrow a stove regardless.

Ragnar’s gaze shifts as Thorfinn enters. He spots you lingering nearby. You shift awkwardly under his gaze. He has a smile on his face though and begins to wave you over. You’re almost, hesitant as you walk to him. Once you reach him,he begins to talk. “Don’t you have anything to eat with you?” You shake your head in denial. “No, I don’t actually.” You then catch his gaze lowering down to your hand. The one that has the herbs bundled together. “You can join us if you’d like. I was about to start cooking.” He states, and with that you take it upon yourself to follow him inside.

It’s obviously a lot warmer inside, considering they have food on the trivet. As you enter you see Thorfinn at the table. Whilst the prince by the pots with a wooden spoon in hand. Thorfinn glances up first, His eyes find you for a moment. Canute however stares slightly. Perhaps it's because he hasn't ever spoken to you directly. You enter then shut the door behind yourself.

Ragnar speaks telling Canute about the rabbit and such. In all honesty you don't really pay it much mind. You settle a little more in the cabin, contemplating on if you should sit down at the table yet. But someone else is paying you some attention. More so to the herbs bundled in your hands.

You make up your mind to stand off to the side and let the heat of the fire warm your body up. And that's nice and all until your body begins to ache again. You internally groan, which reminds you that you didn't search for these herbs for no reason. You glance around and decide to look for a pot so you can boil these herbs and put them to use.

"What are you looking for?" Ragnar asks you. As you glance back to face him you say, "Ah, I thought I'd look for a pot." Theres a slight look of question on his face, you notice that as well as Canute standing up. He then says "What would you need a pot for, do you plan on cooking as well? You move to stand in front of a counter so you can separate the small amount of herbs you collected.

"No, I do not plan on cooking.” You reply a little too flatly. Perhaps you shouldn't talk to the prince so casually? Should you be addressing him as your majesty. It's odd to you that you even took that into consideration.

“Then what are those herbs for? If you don’t mind me asking.” “I have these so I can make tea.” You place the herbs on the counter and stay to pick up the Yarrow. He then turns to Ragnar and comments on the apothecary’s over in Denmark. “So you are an apothecary?” you reply with a small nod and start to pick the leaves of the plant. “Is it a pastime?” It’s not like you don’t enjoy it but you don’t dread it either, perhaps it is a hobby. “I suppose it is a pastime.”

He then brings up something cooking being a pastime for him. Is he trying to have a conversation with you, it would be rude to act uninterested so you continue to talk to him. Asking him about Denmark and talking about where you come from.

“If you’d like I could help you with your herbs since the food will be ready shortly.” I don’t necessarily mind taking my time. “No, I insist I’d like to know how you use these” Oh that’s why he wants to help. He comes up to stand beside you at the counter. And you most definitely notice his presence he’s actually quite a good deal taller than you. “Do they not teach this type of knowledge to the royals?” you ask.

“No they do not. His majesty must look at it as a servants job, he says it’s not fit for a prince.” You place the leaves of the yarrow into a small pile so you can put them into the tea later. “If you want to help you can take the rest of the leaves off of the yarrow and place them in this pile.” And with your words he starts to help you with your work.

“Thank you for your help, your highness” you say but you feel as if it sounds funny coming out of your mouth. As he’s working on the yarrow for you, you turn your attention to the willow bark. Spilling them into strips so you can put them in the tea later.

“When did you pick this pastime up?” He says looking down at you. You turn your attention to him and rock a little bit on your feet. You feel nervous for some reason. You feel self conscious all of a sudden, is it the height difference, maybe the fact that he’s the prince? “I picked it up when I was younger, a relative of mine was an apothecary and I was around them quite a lot, so it’s only natural I picked it up.”

“I see. And what are the names and properties of the herbs you chose?” He asks as he continues to pluck the leaves off. “The ones you are handling are called Yarrow. They’re used for treating injuries,for open wounds and burns.” “If our stay in this village prolongs any longer do you think you could teach me some things that you’ve practiced?” he says. “Well, yes I suppose I could.”
