Everytime ao3 is down I'm reminded of two things:
One is that humans have and always will love telling stories, and they will continue to do so even if there is no benefit to telling these stories, but simply because we love creating things
The other is that a concerning amount of people use fanfiction as a form of escapism and we should probably look into that

Dr. Marilyn Celeste, the resident medical professional in the town of Calico .
Do not be fooled though, she does not a brain cell either despite having a medical degree.
Marilyn first got into medicine because she's intersex and living in the Victorian era so there's like no information about what's going on and certainly even less that she would have access to.
So she thought that since she can pass fairly well as a man she might as well try going to medical school as one to avoid suspicion/ just have an easier time, and Maybe find more information there or do her own research.
She didn't find any answers, but she Did find a genuine love of medicine! Marilyn is really good at her job she just sometimes gets really excited about something and (in true Victorian doctor fashion) losses and sense of ethics.
Eventually she meets Virgil and they probably bond over gender shenanigans or something, she helps him with his medical stuff, he gets used as her guinea pig. Ya know the usual.
At some point Marilyn helps this one lady (a character I am still very much working on) kill her horrible husband and later ends up marrying that lady.
I have yet to figure out why she went west or where she came from, I am open to ideas.
I think Marilyn...... should get married

Wouldn't it be nice to exist as a fungus, to be an unknowable being, traveling blindly through the dirt in many directions at once, existing as something so powerful and mysterious, and yet a large majority of creatures don't even realize you exist, then suddenly one day you decide to be seen, are you safe, poisonous, just wanting to mess with the brains and body's of other living things, who knows, but just as quickly you're gone, you're back to traveling the dirt, unseen and unknown
