Tips for the new semester
The new year is here and so is a new semester! Get going with a few tips to help you succeed this term:
Go over your syllabus to find out what will be covered. Itâs a great way to get a head start and maybe even do some studying beforehand.
Figure out your personal schedule. If your semesters are anything like mine (two semesters, second one extending from january to june), you probably also have a lot more extracurricular events going around compared to last semester (ie. science fair, music conventions, competitions, etc). Plan out your time to prepare for these as well as making sure you are able to catch up on any work you might miss.
Keep track of assignments and test days. Planning is keyâthe second semester is usually fuller and more stressful, and you need to be able to keep up. I highly recommend using a calendar, an agenda, or even your phone to jot down important dates and events.
Sort out papers from last semester. Keep the ones you may need, throw out the ones you donât. Always keep reference pages that you may need in class with you.
Get on good terms with your teachers. This doesnât mean âkiss upâ to them per say, but if you didnât start off on the right foot with them last semester, nowâs a good time to redeem yourself. You never know when you might need some extra assistance or a recommendation.Â
New classes? Meet new people. Even just one. Good company will make your life at school much more enjoyable.
Join a club, or even make one. You meet people interested in the things you are (connections are always good) and you expose yourself to new ideas. Not to mention that itâs good for resume building. Â
Head to the library. With the new semester, the library will be stocked full. You might be able to grab that really popular book youâve been waiting a while for.
Donât wait to start prepping for AP/IB exams if you have them. This is the time to start preparing. Start compiling information and studying bit by bit so when testing time comes, youâll be rested and ready (rather than cramming your head the night before).
Find time for yourself. Take a break. Practice your instrument. Draw something. Go running. Donât let yourself be constantly consumed by schoolwork, youâll burn out.
Iâm starting College in two months, and I have a lot of bookmarked websites and resources that I know will help me when I move out. I know for a lot of us, College seems light years away, but lemme tell you, itâs coming up fast. So without further ado, here is my college masterpost.

The "Secret" To Doing Well in School:
Start on day one and donât stop until youâre done.
As much as you will want to go hang out with your friends the second you get out of class on the first day, resist it. Head to the library, your room, or wherever else it is you get work done and just do it. On the first day you will have such little work to do that it will seem too insignificant to start right away. However, this helps set up the rest of the semester for you. If you can get in the habit of this before the work load gets daunting then procrastination will no longer be an issue. Sit down after your classes and finish all your work (or make a plan on how to finish it) before you relax. Simple as that. Do that and cramming will no longer be your life. If you think thatâs too overwhelming, try challenging yourself to do that for 30 days. After the 30 days it will become a habit!
But maybe youâre of the opinion that procrastination is fine and that you do pretty well regardless. Thatâs fine. But think of how much easier studying would be if you didnât procrastinate. By the end of week one you would have all of week oneâs material down pat. You would have the opportunity to quickly review in the coming weeks instead of still struggling to learn it all. Then come the weekend before the test you will simply be reinforcing what you already know instead of struggling to have complete knowledge of what youâll be tested on.
Boom. That A is easily within reach.
The culture behind procrastination unfortunately only ends up feeding the habit. The idea that procrastination is just a thing that everyone does and jokes around about is the worst part. Well, itâs time to take it seriously! There actually is no secret to doing well in school! You already know what you need to do. So start doing it!

1. To get into the University I want 2. To not get stuck where I donât want to be 3. To prove people wrong 4. To make my family proud 5. To be like Rory Gilmore 6. To be the best version of myself 7. Because Iâm blessed to have the opportunity to study 8. To make pretty notes 9. To know more 10. To feel like I did everything I could 11. To have the house of my dreams 12. To be the person I want to be in a few years 13. To change the world
It really is getting out of hand now

Do you think that a girl that's Muslim and wears head scarf can dance kathak or bharanatyam?
Absolutely!
In Kathak, the technical dance items are usually performed with a more Islamic style costume called an âAngrakhaâ which is worn with a scarf (dupatta) to cover the head. In Hindu-based dance items, the dupatta is usually not worn but if itâs part of your faith you can still wear your head scarf.
In Bharatanatyam there is no head scarf, and sometimes you portray characters who wear different head pieces (such as crowns, wigs, etc). Much of the dances are largely Hindu-based. Itâs important you find a teacher who is accepting and understanding of your faith too.
Both Bharatanatyam and Kathak are rooted in Hinduism and the story-telling of Hindu mythology. If you feel comfortable performing those stories in regards to your own Islamic faith and traditions, then you can definitely pursue these dances. An encouraging teacher will also embrace your dance interest and respect your beliefs.

Tips In Choosing A Bharata Natyam Instructor
By Toni Vang
Dancing is known to be a good form of exercise. Many people have indulged themselves into this wholesome activity because of how it can do good to our body. Many folks have tried a lot of exercise stuffs yet they only got bored which is pretty opposite to dancing. When you are dancing, calories are burned and you are having fun in doing it as well. A dance that is considered as an efficient way of losing weight is bharathanatyam. This dance is originated in India. Folks from Los Angeles, CA are fascinated with this bodily process because of how it can effectively burn calories. If you are hunting for effective Bharata Natyam Los Angeles dance instructors, here are some tips that can help you be guided. Acquiring a massive amount of information must be gathered first before choosing for the exact instructor. You can never fully have a good choice if you have not made any selections. You need to do some research first. Doing it requires you to spend a minute of your time facing the computer screen. You may also do it on your laptop, tablet or smartphone. Do not miss to include the zip code or the name of the city on your search so it will be uncomplicated for you to find the prospects. Word of the mouth is one of the best options. Gathering probable prospects can be highlighted through referrals. The ones your friends and family have shared can entirely be marked as fit but never assume that they are already the primo because you still need to do things that can help you be guided in finding for the exact instructor. You may also start digging through the phone directory. Aside from that, gathering for more information can still be done through the local newspaper ads. Radio advertisements are also helpful. Digging on your phone book is also efficient. When choosing for the best instructor in the city, it is always wise to spend a bit of your time for the interview. You need to talk to each of the prospect you have searched from various methods. Ask each of the candidate questions regarding the lessons you want to learn. You must inspect their background, credentials and experiences. A license is also important to ensure that the prospects are truly reliable and legitimate. When choosing for a good instructor, quality naturally matters than the price you are going to pay for the service. The price does not necessarily define about how good or bad a certain instructor is. Observe quality more since that highly matters in your learning. Select the best location that fits appropriately to your convenience. Location and venue extremely matters. Make it sure that it gives you convenience particularly on your traveling hours. You surely do not want to be stressed from hours of travel so you must choose a place where it is not too far from home. Your comfort is basically important when enrolling in a dance class. Since you will be performing various actions in here, it essential that you feel comfortable when facing your teacher. If you prefer a woman teacher then go for it. The decision is always yours.

Padma Venkatramanâs inspiring story of a young girlâs struggle to regain her passion and find a new peace is told lyrically through verse that captures the beauty and mystery of India and the ancient bharatanatyam dance form. This is a stunning novel about spiritual awakening, the power of art, and above all, the courage and resilience of the human spirit. (x)
Read it read it read it.Â
I had the honor of meeting Ms. Venkatraman today when she visited the bookstore where I work, to do a signing and talk about her life and what inspires her. After listening-in on her discussion while I pretended to tidy shelves and re-alphabetize (okay, I was actually doing those things, but mostly I was listening), I decided purchasing the book myself would be worth it. Now, when I first heard what it was about, I probably had the same reaction as all of you. âItâs about dancers?â but hearing my manager talk about the way it was written in verse rather than prose definitely sparked my interest, and Ms. Venkatraman was so nice I felt that I owed it to her (she did henna on my arm and wrote a very kind message in my book!). When I got home, I picked up the book and started reading and I didnât even put it down to pee. Time gets swept away when you begin reading A Time to Dance, and it doesnât come back until you can physically feel the book becoming lighter, as you near those dreaded final pages. The development, the style, the emotion present in this novel - itâs amazing, truly truly stunning. Anyone struggling with their body image or coping with loss in general, this is a must-read. Hell, itâs a must-read for anyone. Plus, Ms. Venkatraman is originally from India, so you can trust the accuracy of the characters and their situations. Seriously, the book is amazing and you should absolutely support this author because she deserves every bit of it.Â
