I need an adventure like this one
Kim Kelley-Wagner has two daughters who were adopted from China. In everyday life, they have been subjected to horrid statements from people - to their faces, to their mother as they stood by her, etc. In this photo collection, shared on her blog, Kim and her daughters (Lily and Meika) put these ignorant cruelties front and center. [x]
“I have tried to explain to my daughters that people do not say these things to be mean, they say them out of ignorance, which is why I am sharing some of them. Words are powerful, they can become tools or weapons, choose to use them wisely.”
i’m honestly deeply ashamed because of the harshness of our world
This hit me hard. My little sister and I are also adopted from China like the girls in the above photos. I am constantly aware that I am different from my family, that I don’t quite ‘belong’. When I’m out in public with my dad (a 6'6 blond man) we get the dirtiest looks from people who assume I’m a mail-order bride or that my dad is a pedophile. My sister and I have received similar comments like “Why do you call your adoptive parents ‘mom’ and ‘dad’? They’re not your real parents” Even my parents don’t understand the subtle racism we face. They’ve called me “yellow” saying “oh it’s okay, Kayla doesn’t mind” and I’ve profusely exaggerated how “white-washed” I am to distance myself from the negative stereotypes I face. Being Asian is treated as a joke in my family, like “oh I look asian, but I’m not really, I’m white inside”
