Her answers to his questions just broke him further, making his anger elevate. He just stayed quiet on the phone, wondering why he was even still on the phone with the girl that kept breaking him. “Why are you doing this to me? Do you enjoy hurting me?” he asked trying to keep the pain in his voice at a minimum. He couldn’t be seen as weak to her. But he kept thinking back to how things were between them in high school. She was his best friend and was always there for him as he was there for her. But now they were complete strangers that happened to have a shared past. “I don’t understand you Natalie. You chose this, you chose to leave. Why do you want to hear my voice then?”
Her heart began to beat faster against her chest as he threw question after question at her. Not even giving her a chance to process what was happening in that moment. Everything else was a blur, only memories of him were clear. “No.” Her voice cracked, trying her best not to fall apart over the phone. She had wanted to talk to him again, but not like this. “I didn’t mean to hurt you, I loved you. I love you. I was stupid back then, you know that. But I needed to just hear you say somethin to me again. I’m sorry..” She sniffled, lowering her head as she softly cried into the receiver.
