Beach tic-tac-toe was a strange idea, but felt fitting for Americans. They always seemed to need something to entertain them. A nation of people with chronic boredom, and billions of companies to sell them solutions to that problem. He wondered what this cost the company. Twenty American dollars? Thirty? Surely less than fifty. Though, he supposed he was using it, so it must have had some value. It certainly made their conversation easier.
He picked up the Os and put his arm through the holes before turning to Natalie to wait for her to explain the beach tic-tac-toe traditions. “Oh, my name is Klaus. It’s nice to meet you Nat.” He nodded
After he told his name, she seemed to take in his outfit which caused Klaus to self-consciously look down at his own outfit. It was only then that he suddenly realized that didn’t completely match. Fortunately, he had many complimentary colors, but he was wearing pink and red in the same outfit. Klaus hadn’t considered his attire all that much when leaving the house, because he had thought no one would remember the new guy. Now, he realized he must have looked terribly silly to the woman.
At least she smiled though.
“Well, I’m certainly older than you.” He admitted and placed the O on the center square. “I have… Scheiße…” He snapped his finger before stating, “Forty. I have forty years. My birthday is on January 23rd.”
He looked up a moment and saw some people drinking, “Is there a drinking element of this game?”
"Well, I'm certainly older than you," the man admitted as he placed the 'O' ring in the center square. "I have....Scheiße…" Then, the lanky man began to snap his fingers, correcting himself. "Forty. I have forty years. My birthday is on January 23rd."
Natalie smiled, wondering if it must be challenging to think in one language and then have to speak in another. She had known plenty of bilingual people who seemed to communicate in their native tongue and English in the same sentence, then had to backtrack to think of the correct English word.
"Is there a drinking element to this game?" Klaus asked as Nat began to look at the board, deciding to place her 'X' directly below the center square.
"I don't play a lot of drinking games," Natalie admitted with a laugh, "because I tend to just drink...frequently throughout the activity." Though Natalie was not a lush, when she did drink, she enjoyed herself. "But how about this, the loser has to go fetch the next round?"
Taking another sip of her drink, she arched her brows, "Your turn, friend."
As she waited, she titled her head side to side, watching the man in front of her. “Do you like Maine so far? I’m from San Diego, and sometimes I feel like the North East versus the West Coast is just....” she mimicked an explosion with her hands, making the sound effects to emphasis just how wild she felt the differences were, “I can’t imagine what it’s like compared to another country.”Â
