“I’m not saying that you have to go home with them. Or even mean it. Just… flirt is all I’m asking. I’m sure there is someone here good-looking enough to flirt with,” Aurora said after sipping her drink.
“I’m seriously beginning to worry that you’re obsessed with my sex life,” Natalie teased as she sipped her drink. The truth was Nat had a messy history when it came to love and relationships. She was a serial monogamist with a severe commitment phobia. It didn’t bode well. So after her last relationship’s demise, the surgeon decided to take a big step back.
It had been three and a half years since she had even flirted. Aurora had been very supportive of Nat’s decision at first. She had always been concerned about the surgeon’s decision to jump from one long-term relationship to another. Yet, now, Nat was starting to think that Aurora was tired of hearing the vibrator that late at night.
“There are some newer people here. They might be good to try. There is a pretty new redhead that might be your type.”
Nat looked over and spotted the woman Aurora was talking about. She was stunning, with long wavy red hair, curves for days, and a pretty smile. Three years ago, Nat would have struck up a conversation. Now, the surgeon just shrugged.
“You can’t just force these things, Larson… it happens naturally. I will talk to someone, though…when I find them. I’m keeping my eyes open. I’m checking people out. I just…I’m not not happy. I promise. I’m enjoying being single. Besides, we still have that thing right? Where if we’re not married by fifty, I’ll just marry you. It’s cool.”
Anti-NMDA Encephalitis had managed to wreck both Aurora and Natalie’s life. Aurora understood part of the reason that Natalie hadn’t been flirting had been that she had been ill a good portion of it. How could Natalie think about finding someone else to be with when her best friend was ill? Well, to be fair it was possible, but Aurora understood why she hadn’t. Then after Aurora was out of the hospital she still needed help due to the pain that she was in.
However, the last nine months were different. Aurora had a new doctor that helped with her pain management, she had a townhouse where she was on the bottom floor most days, and she was able to live most days without many complications. Natalie no longer needed to worry about Aurora.
She thought at first that it was that Natalie wanted a break from jumping from relationship to relationship, but then she just didn’t flirt with anyone ever. It seemed that Natalie had completely given up on any effort to get back out there. Aurora didn’t want her friend missing out on her chance, so she wanted to try to help her friend a little. She rolled her eyes as Nat insisted that it was her sex life that Aurora was worried about, but instead of commenting, she distracted Nat by pointing out the pretty redhead.
To her shock, Nat simply shrugged the bombshell off. “I know you’re happy, and you’re enjoying being single.” I want you to have someone who can take better care of you. Someone who can feel like home when I’m ill. “We can get married if we’re fifty, but I’m going to be honest Nat that is not my main plan. I want us both to find nice people to share our lives with. People who will tell me no when I bring up bringing another cat home. I can’t believe you let me bring a third home.”
nataliewallacerp:
Aurora Larson was the sunshine of Nat Wallace’s life. The literal center of her universe. Natalie had two jobs in her mind, one being her actual career as a Pediatric surgeon, and the other was ensuring the care and welfare of Aurora, her best friend since they were in middle school. She knew her best friend would disagree with that statement, but for the last two years, Nat had rarely let Aurora out of her sight.
“I need a drink before I can dance like that again,” Aurora said, leading Nat to the bar. Sitting on a barstool, the blonde watched her friend order both drinks and then turn toward her. “Okay, so I have plans for tonight.”
Of course, she did. Aurora always had a plan.
“First, I want to drink until you’re tipsy enough to talk to someone else.”
Nat arched a brow but let her friend continue.
“Then, I am going to flirt with someone until they call me pretty. Then we can stumble home to the kitties and watch that San Diego Zoo show you like a lot. Any protest to the plan?”
As Natalie’s drink arrived, the Surgeon reached out and hummed loudly as if she was genuinely thinking over her friend’s proposal.
“Three episodes- no falling asleep, and we get those frozen eclairs from Walmart? The ones with the powdered sugar and chocolate on top?” Natalie knew an offer when she saw one, but she was never one to take the market price.
“And know that I’m taking a considerable risk flirting with someone. I’ve been going strong and do not want to mess that up.”
“Three episodes?!” Aurora faked indignation and shook her head. “You drive a hard bargain, Nat.” She paused and pretended to think about the suggestion. In reality, Aurora did like the show. It was the frozen eclairs that actually caused pause. Her encephalitis had triggered her anorexia, and she was still having to retrain her brain to look at food at something empowering. Once again, she reminded herself that the eclairs were something fun and happiness was in fact a nutrient. “I think you’re right that you are taking a risk enough to have earned all of that. Deal.”
She grinned and took a sip of her drink. “I’m not saying that you have to go home with them. Or even mean it. Just... flirt is all I’m asking. I’m sure there is someone here good looking enough to flirt with.”
Aurora began to scan the area and remarked, “There are some newer people here. They might be good to try. There is a pretty new red head that might be your type.” She nodded her head over to the woman with a blue bikini on that was talking to a brunette with a huge tattoo on her back.
nataliewallacerp:
San Deigo, born and raised Natalie Wallace, was a true California Girl. Sure, the Atlantic didn’t have the same hold on her as the Pacific, but it was an ocean. There would also be an open bar and a chance for beach volleyball that Nat wasn’t about to miss.
After convincing Aurora to attend the party, she dug out her favorite swimsuit, a sun hat, shoes, and a beach blanket and headed to Lake Sapphire Beach.
The East Coast felt like a different world to Natalie, but she loved every minute of it so far. After nine months, it started feeling more like home every day.
Grabbing a Strawberry Margarita, Nat headed toward the dance floor, where she was captured by her best friend.
“Let’s baptize this dance floor in body glitter!”
“That’s oddly religious of you,” Nat said as she started dancing with Aurora. “But I never say no to an immersion of glitter.”
“Baptism is a strange word.” Aurora admitted as she grinned, “Oh well!” She began to twist her hips to the beat allowing her thoughts to melt away. She held onto Natalie’s hands the entire time allowing Natalie to guide her into any moves that she wanted. When she didn’t guide, Aurora took the direction . For a moment, she let the beat take them away to an island far away.
Eventually, the song stopped, and Aurora admitted, “I need a drink before I can dance like that again.” She giggled as she pulled Nat towards the bar. She ordered the both of them drinks before turning towards Nat. “Okay, so I have plans for tonight. First, I want to drink until you’re tipsy enough to talk to someone else. Then, I want to push you to that person. Then, I am going to flirt with someone until they call me pretty. Then we can stumble home to the kitties and watch that San Diego Zoo show you like a lot.“
Aurora was smart enough to know her friend would not agree to her plan unless she offered a treat in the end, and Aurora knew Nat was looking forward to binging that show with her again. Not that it was certain to get Nat to hang out with someone else.
Drinking was the other thing needed.
“Any protests to the plan?”
Shine Bright II
All Aurora wanted was to put the past behind her. She had been drowning in everything drama in California, and she was desperate to get above the water. She wanted to shine like a star in the sky for one night, and this beach party had all her hopes tossed into them.
Aurora had demanded that Natalie join her, and she had gone to store after store finding just the right bathing suit to go. Everything had to be perfect. A waxing session, hair cut, and hours of fighting with herself over what was the perfect attire later Aurora was standing in front of the party with a giddy grin on her lips.
All she wanted now was to go dance, and she didn’t care who with. She grabbed the hand of the closest person and pulled on it. “Come dance with me! Let’s baptize this dance floor in body glitter!” She giggled.

Natalie immediately realizes something is wrong, and they call emergency services. While Natalie is explaining over the phone what is going on with her friend, Aurora slumps into the floor and has a seizure. Aurora is admitted to the local hospital where she quickly gets worse. Throughout the rest of the month, Aurora loses the ability to keep track of conversation, loses the ability to walk normally, and slowly she forgets who her parents are.
