MAYBE THEY’RE HIDING…
Nathaniel prided himself on being more like a son to his uncle than his actual cousin was. Where Peter was skeptical and quiet, Nathaniel was devoted and outgoing, the perfect person to take over the community one day. And he looked forward to it, knowing that when the rest of the world was destroyed, at least he’d be in charge. If Peter didn’t get in the way. It was clear Nathaniel was the one cut out to be leader, the one who deserved it but Peter was the leader’s son, and that counted for something.
WE HOPE THEY’RE PLAYING A GAME…
Clearly the solution was to undermine Peter anyway he could, and as it turned out, it was easier than he expected. He saw Peter hanging out with Laurie, who always doubted what the community told her, and David, who disrespected authority at every opportunity. While that was good news on its own, Nathaniel knew that if was going to villianize Peter in front of his father, he’d need more than just accusations. He’d need proof. So for months he joined their club and encouraged every harebrained conspiracy theory and plan they came up with. Especially when they began to plan their escape. His uncle would never be able to forgive Peter for that.
BUT THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING…
The night they planned to run-away, Nathaniel intended to tell his uncle so that he would catch them in the act, but things took a turn for the worse when he ran into David on the way there, who had somehow found out about his deception, and attempted to force him to stay quiet. When Nathaniel refused, David beat him until he was unconscious. When he woke up they were outside of the Community. David had taken him with them so that there would be no way of tracing them. Things only got worse from there. Nathaniel stayed with the group, because he knew he wouldn’t be able to get back home on his own, but he resented every minute of it and did all he could to sabotage the expedition. When they were finally picked up by the police, he argued profusely that he had to be returned home, that his uncle, who he lived with, was extremely power and important, that he himself was a prophet. The only problem was he couldn’t remember where home was. Concerned with Nathaniel’s rantings, the authorities sent him to a facility who were more equipped to deal with Nathaniel than they were, who in turn sent him to Brielle.
