“As long as you’re not actively murdering someone, I really don’t think they care,” Clary said with a shrug, looking down at the dog. “Even then, they probably only care as long as it’s convenient.”

“How do you know I’m not doing that too?” Nate joked, wiggling his eyebrows with a smirk across his face. “I mean, it’s always the janitor who did it - like in the old Scooby Doo stuff. Always the janitor.”

“More like a migraine, thanks for asking.”

“Right. I am well acquainted with those. Taken paracetamol or some whatever? I’ve got some, if you need it. Not actually sure if I’m allowed to give pills to students, but we’ll ignore that little detail.”

Things had finally been going good for her, but it seemed like the universe had no mercy for a girl that didn’t deserve it. That pattern only served to continue when she ran into Nate, the last person she wanted to see when she was as mentally messed up as she was at the moment – vulnerability never came easy to her and that was even more true around him. “Nothing,” she said quickly, but she gave a sigh and decided to come clean. “They transferred Cas. Away from here. I don’t know where. They won’t tell me if he’ll come back.”

Surprised that she had confided in him, Nate stayed silent for several moments, considering just what to say. Oh, it would be so easy to make a joke. So easy to knock her down at her worst, because that was what he was good at. Save himself from having to help with the emotions of others, emotions that he couldn’t even handle in own head. But he understood losing people and could empathize with her more than she probably realized. “That sucks... And as much as you will doubt it, I am sorry that it happened. Having something taken from you when you just got it back? That’s the worst kind of bullshit.”

Despite her best protests – and threats of violence and legal action – Caspian had still been transferred to a different facility and she was left alone again. All her yelling in the Dean’s office just got a security guard called to drag her out and into the hall, leaving her there with mascara streaking and eyes on her. “What the hell are you looking at?” She snapped, pushing her hair back out of her face and trying to pull herself together.

Nate had been on his floor-mopping round for the day and was about to return his supplies to the janitor’s closet when, of course, he stumbled across her. Normally, he might have issued a snarky comment, or completely ignored the situation... but something in his heart head told him not to leave her like this. “Just checking on you. What happened?” he asked sincerely.

“Can you…talk quieter? Just a touch. I promise I’m not deaf.”

“Didn’t realize I was talking any louder than normal. You got super sensitive bat ears or something, kid?”

       “ awe, thank you so MUCH!! “ she bends over, and ever so GENTLY, and perhaps a little too unenthusiastically, pet the dog. “ what’s her name?? what kind of breed is she? “

“You’re welcome, kid,” Nate replies, watching as his dog happily basks in the attention that she’s receiving from Lyra. “Winnie. And she’s a Lab. Probably not pure Lab, but who gives a shit about all that pedigree crap?”

cas scowled at him; they weren’t friends. “cassy? seriously? my name is caspian. cas-pi-an. then again you’re so old it isn’t your fault you forgot. must be the dementia.”

Nate laughed, but it was short and obviously ironic. “Dementia? That’s hilarious, kid. You and your sister should do a comedy double-act. But seriously - it’s either Cassy or Caspian the Unfriendly Ghost, so take your pick.”

“That s-seems reasonable,” she giggled when the dog turned to give her a lick. “She could kill people w-with her cuteness.” In another view, Riley would find her actions RIDICULOUS, but animals are her absolute weakness. There was no helping it. “Y-you think so?” She let out a breath of awe, scratching behind the dog’s ears.

As much as Nate would deny that he liked anything sweet and cutesy, it did put a smile on his face to see her bonding with his dog. “Yeah, but, that said, she loves everyone. Even manages to be fond of me, somehow. And I’m an asshole, aren’t I, girl?” The dog gave a short bark in response. “You like dogs, then?”

      “ oh my god, is that a dog?? “ her voice raises several octaves as she approaches the two. lyra personally hated dogs, but… “ can i pet her?? “

“No, it’s clearly a gorilla,” Nate deadpanned, but nodded all the same and moved away his own hands so the girl could pet the dog. “Sure, go ahead. Don’t worry: she’s friendly.”

   “why’s it even matter if i tell anyone?” he asks, crossing his arms over his chest. “she’s not exactly purse-sized. i mean, really, someone higher up’s gonna find out she’s here sooner or later.”

“Ah, see that’s where you’re wrong. Nobody comes in here, except me. And you, for whatever reason. I only gotta keep this under wraps for a couple more hours, then I can sneak her out and back home. So, you promise to keep your lips zipped, kid?”

“O-okay,” Riley nodded, trying not to smile too much as she carefully approached. She knelt beside the man, hand resting on the dog’s head before sliding down it’s neck in a comforting caress. “What um, what’s her name?”

Nate watched her as she gently stroked her fingers over his dog’s head, who looked elated by the attention she was being given. “Killer,” he joked, rubbing her ears. “Really, it’s Winnie. Sweetest, prettiest dog you’ll ever meet, and that’s a fact,” he stated with pride. “I think she likes you.”

“i hear what you’re saying.” cas says blandly, watching the other with a raised brow. “and i think i’m going to do exactly the opposite of what you want.”

“Aw, and here was me thinking that we were pals, Cassy. I’ll come up with an excuse though, don’t you worry about me. I’ve gotten away with worse.”

“Why would I tell anyone?” Clary laughed, manicured fingernails tapping against the arm of her wheelchair. “It’s just a dog. There’s plenty of kids around here with pets. Or, uh, therapy animals, or whatever.”

“Yeah, but they’ve got permission to have them here. I don’t,” Nate told her, glancing up from where he knelt on the floor. “But actually- considering the shit going on here, I could be bringing in stuff way worse than an over-sized puppy.”

“Who’s my good girl? Who’s the best pup in the whole wide wor--” Nate slowly turned his head as he realized that someone had spotted him. “Alright-- So, maybe don’t tell anybody I brought her to work, ‘kay?”

“clem and i are very close.” he replies smoothly, his words flow with ease- too much ease. he’s said the exact same speech every time someone comments on his relationship with his sister. “we’re twins, we share a bond. i guess being the so close in age helps, since i don’t view her as the annoying little sister. she is younger by the way. i came first by a minute and a half- and i’ll never let her forget it.”

“Oh yeah, I think I’ve heard more than enough about how, uh, close you guys are.” He joked, but the whole thing did come across as far too weird, even for him. And Nate knew plenty about weird. “Well, she’s little and annoying, so that actually surprises me. I don’t think I could deal with having a twin.”

“Oh, for sure. You’re so mature,” she teases, rolling her eyes. “It was amazing and you know it. Don’t be jealous just because I’m funnier than you.” Absently, she took a bite of the snack, not super into it but enjoying the experience. “Yeah and you’re such a gentleman. I’m pretty sure we don’t have any girl janitors, but something tells me you wouldn’t mind spending time in there.”

“Listen here, gingersnap-- One weak use of wordplay does not make you funnier than me,” Nate protested, pulling away his food before she could eat all of it. “Hey, I might be creepy, but I’m not creepy creepy. Sure, I’ll chat up some of the older girls, but spying on them in the locker rooms is not my thing. At least, it isn’t anymore. My high school days-- well, that’s a whole other story.” He smirked and ate his entire chocolate bar in one huge bite to save it from being snatched away again.

“How about trash man-child?” She suggested before shaking her head, obviously happier than usual. “Orange you glad I’m not a brunette?” It was a bad joke, one that she’d come up with when she was about six and hadn’t let see the light of day since then. “Guess that explains the girls’ locker rooms then. Pretty sure there’s a rotting corpse in locker 32.”

“There is nothing childish about me,” Nate said sarcastically, before giving her a hard shove with his elbow at her joke. “That was bad, and I’m the King, nay, the Emperor of shitty jokes, so I don’t normally say jokes are bad, but that was bad bad.” He picked himself another snack and started to munch. “Mmm, at this point, I don’t know if you’re joking. But, y’know, I can’t just go into the girls’ locker room. That would be downright ungentlemanly of me. So I guess I’ll just have to stay here and let someone else deal with the dead person stench.”
