Jake heard the familiar voice and turned around. " Veronica Lodge offering to get me a drink? Whatever did I do to deserve it?" He said as he looked her over. " Im not on the clock so I could very well use a drink." He was working in Riverdale as a homicide detective and hadnt been living there long but he certainly had met the beautiful dark haired woman offering to buy him a drink.
She's still getting used to the new addition to Riverdale's finest. He seems nice enough so far, and she's looking forward to finding out more about him, hence the drink. "Don't get too used to it. Next one's on you," she teases. "What are you in the mood for?" The choice of liquor says a lot about a man.

Michael pulled the cigarette from his lips and gestured to the seat. " Have at it." He said, gazing at her through his heavily black lined eyes. " Not enjoying the party inside?" He asked, smoking on the back deck outside. " Surprised Cheryl dropped a invitation my way. Pete was going to come but he's busy with fuck knows what. Then we all know how Henrietta feels about Cheryl and Firkle does what she does usually." He explained why he wasn't with his crew.
She takes a seat next to him, all too aware of the shortness of her skirt. In a battle between practicality and fashion, fashion always comes out on top. She shakes her head. It's a classic Cheryl Blossom party, and with Cheryl being her frenemy (leaning more towards enemy lately), the party is far from enjoyable for her. "Cheryl makes all of her decisions on a whim. I've given up on trying to understand why she does the things she does." Sometimes that worked in her favor, but she's learned not to rely on the redhead. "I didn't see you inside earlier. Did you show up just for the change of scenery?"

"Let's," Veronica decided, copying his smirk. She had yet to decide if meeting up with him counted as hitting rock bottom, but they did always have fun together. What was the harm in one more night together? "I hope you didn't forget about my exquisite taste." Nothing but the top shelf, she doesn't accept mediocrity.

What the- "I don't let the people I care about get hurt on my watch."
"Well... yeah... I know that." Most of the time, anyway. Occasionally there were moments where she found herself slipping back into the habits she'd developed during her time with the Mason family. She was younger and naive back then- something happened in her subconscious that stayed with her 'til this day. "I know that," she said it again, less convincing than the last time. "... But the Mason family fucked me up."
Her eyes soften at the mention of the Mason family. She knows enough about them to understand what Sarah was talking about. "I get it." Her own family fucked her up, she knows what it's like, but that doesn't give her friend an excuse to tear herself down. "That just means I'll have to stick around to remind you of how amazing you are, and eventually you'll start to really believe it."

"..." And just like that Sarah's seconds away from crying. "I'm not... good at letting you guys help me." The mere thought of asking for help makes her sick to her stomach. "I've built up a reputation as the Mom Friend, the person everyone goes to for assistance- not the person who needs it." She tightens the grip she has on her pen. "If I start asking for help, letting people do things for me, then... who am I? Who do I become in the family?"
If Veronica happens to notice a pair of teary eyes staring back at her, well, she doesn't mention it. What she does do is place her hands on top of Sarah's. "Even Mom Friends need help every now and then." She gets it; sometimes, her independence becomes a fear of depending on others, but that doesn't mean she's okay with Sarah's refusal to put herself first. "You don't need a role to be family. You're Sarah Miller, and that person is so much more than just a mom."
