Ravensburger Waltz: key points
2015 Technical handbook and RW pattern
Pattern 1, KP 1: (Gif 1) This is a man only key point, and it’s the two right forward inside three turns with 6 beat swing roll that the dance opens with. Right forward inside edge for 2 beats, turn on beat 3, right back outside for 3 beats. The edges must be clean on the entry and exit of the turn, the turn itself must not be hopped, and the free leg should swing through as close as possible to the skating leg.
Pattern 1, KP 2&3: (Gif 2) A mohawk for both partners. The lady is marked for KP 2 and the man for KP 3. Both partners do a left forward inside for 2 beats, then transfer onto a right back inside for one beat. For the turn, the free foot should be placed at the inside of the skating foot. The turn should be done along a continuous curve and the entry and exit edges should be of equal depth.
Pattern 2, KP 1: (Gif 3) Both partners. Firstly the lady does a left forward inside three turn, again turning on the third beat. She then does a run, chasse, right back outside edge into a twizzle while her partner does left forward inside for 3, right forward outside for three, and then left forward outside three turn. There’s a lot going on here, but the only steps that are actually marked are the three turns by each partner. Edges must be clean & turns must not be hopped.
Pattern 2, KP 2: (Gif 4) Man only - it’s just the first two outside edges you see in the gif. He should step directly onto an outside edge, not go from a flat to outside, and hold each edge for three beats. In the gif you can see Ruslan coming back onto an inside edge at the end of the first step; this is OK this season, as a change of edge is allowed to prepare the push onto the next step, as long as it’s only done on the last beat of that step.
Pattern 2, KP 3: (Gif 4) Lady only. While her partner is doing the outside edges, the lady does a left forward outside for two beats, then a rocker turn on beat 3 onto a left back outside, holding that edge for 3 beats. The free leg should swing closely past the skating leg before the turn and then after the turn is allowed to swing forward again on beat four. She then steps onto a right forward inside edge for 3 beats, and then does a closed choctaw onto a left back outside, again holding for three beats. For the choctaw, the free foot should be placed behind the heel of the skating foot.
To get any key point, edges must be clean, turns must be done with the correct foot placement and each step must be held for the specified amount of time. However, skaters missing the key points can still get positive GOE for their patterns if they have good ice coverage, mostly clean deep edges, good holds, and the shape of the pattern is correct.
