maomao is my favorite "not like other girls" style protagonist bc for one shes a girls girl through and through. to the bone. and two she's just a weird little freak. absolute lunatic. they have the whole "omg she's actually beautiful and everyone falls for her when she's all made up" trope but the punchline is that she does not fucking want to look like that. she actively puts dirt on her face every day bc she does not want to be perceived as attractive (mostly out of fear of being used for sex work though at the same time she has the utmost respect for women who do sex work like she grew up in a brothel those are her sisters). she's Sherlock level smart and solves every mystery so fast but goes "well thats none of my business. anyway back to testing poisons on myself" she has the 2nd most powerful guy in the nation head over heels in love with her and is like "man this guy is weird around me what's his deal. I guess he's fine though because he gives me rare medicines and has no dick" fucking ICON i love her. also she once slapped someone so hard they fell on the floor. 10/10

thinking about how when chuuya was taken, his puppy barked so loud it woke the neighbors. scratched up the door trying to follow him. when the men in coats didn’t bring him back, the little thing curled up in chuuya’s bed and waited. refused to eat for days. cried at the window every night like he thought if he just watched long enough, chuuya would come waddling down the street again. even months later, he still padded into chuuya’s room at night, curled up on his pillow just to smell him on the sheets.

by the time chuuya's integrated into the mafia, the dog is old and gray. he still whines at the bedroom door. and he will probably continue to do so until he physically can't anymore, till he grows too weak to walk the house and check the windows and doors every night before bed. till he resigns himself to the (too) little dog bed that chuuya handpicked for him and dreams of his kids smile and voice before he dozes. even in rest, loyalty is a hard thing to put down.

i wonder why they made verlaine have chuuya's hair color in the manga adaptation. he's depicted as blonde in the light novel art.... i guess they have the same hair color to emphasize their relation? they aren't genetically siblings, though... so i wonder what the decision behind that was. now it just seems like these government fuckers really like to experiment on gingers (/lh)... or does it imply that the experiments turn them ginger? 😭

Keep thinking about the similarities and differences between Dazai's living conditions and Chuuya's living conditions, but how at the end of the day, they both just...don't know how to live. Even Verlaine looks around and asks how/why Dazai lives in the middle of nowhere and in a container, clearly pointing out that it's unusual but Dazai just shrugs it off. Chuuya has his desk in the middle of the room facing his bed when desks are usually in corners or against walls or facing a window but his is pointed at his bed. Meanwhile Dazai's is facing the wall. You walk into either of these rooms and wonder who lives there because you glean no personality or interests from them and wouldn't expect them to be where two teenagers make their homes. And there's something uniquely sad about that fact.
