My name is Max. My world is fire and blood. Once, I was a cop. A road warrior searching for a righteous cause. As the world fell, each of us in our own way was broken. It was hard to know who was more crazy; me, or everyone else. I am the one that runs from both the living and the dead. Hunted by scavengers, haunted by those I could not protect. So I exist in this wasteland, reduced to one instinct: survive.

Max made his way over rather slower than his dog did, due in part to the three-year-old hanging off his back. “-- Sorry, uh...she...smells something on you. Must be new.”

          eyes slide about the park, examining surroundings. one observation, particularly potent, sits uneasily with the boy: the unnerving reality that nobody he has seen, here or anywhere, has a quirk of any kind to be seen. what is going on here? eighty percent of the population should have a quirk of some sort. is this a community of people without quirks, maybe…?

           shakes his head, dismissing the possibility. there’s no way that a community this large can exist and only be comprised of quirkless people, not when the ratio of quirkless people to the whole population is one to five. something’s not right. he considers the circumstances that brought him here. a villain, most likely, acting stealthily, with a quirk that could transport him here. but… izuku can’t be sure where ‘ here ’ is.

          ‘ hey. ’ he stands up and approaches the nearest person, speaking in english. ‘ is everyone here quirkless? ’

Max is watching his son and his dog run around the park, himself sat upon a nearby bench as he kinda massages his knee beneath its brace, a combination of habit and soothingness. He’s a little startled when someone comes up, though, so involved is he in watching his kid and dog playing. It...takes a lot not to react violently. But he takes a breath. And frowns. “-- ...Eh?” is his eloquent, Australian response. “-- Quirkless?”

“Why do you have to make so much sense?” Scott asked, smiling a little. “I’ll talk to him… maybe not right now, but soon. Thanks. I’m Scott. You work with Stiles, right? I think I’ve seen you around.”

“-- Side effect of being a dad,” was Max’s response, his eyes flickering over to his son, Jamie, who was currently chilling with crayons as three-year-olds were prone to doing. “-- Anytime, hope it works out well. ‘Sright, though. It’s uh...nice to...finally put a name to the face and uh...face to the...everything else. Max.”

“-- Eclipse is when one space thing covers another space thing.” Max pulled out a scrap of paper from one of his many pockets, and ripped it into three pieces, setting them all in a line, going from her to him. He pointed at the one closest to her. “-- You’re that one. Middle one blocks out the other one, yeah?” He then moved the one he’d been pointing at, a couple of inches to the side. “-- You’re in space. Doesn’t block it out anymore. Angles. Not in a line. Not blocking it out. Not an eclipse.”

Max frowned, in all honesty. “-- ...Isn’t uh...hm...wouldn’t be an eclipse, though? ‘Cause uh...angles?”

Monty smiled. It was nice to have ended up in a place that wasnt in constant conflict. Some people were even genuinely nice. “That sounds like fun. Maybe I’ll have to take you up on that.”

A nod. “-- Just uh...let me know, yeah? I’m Max. I uh...work at M&G. Coffee place.”

Max frowns, but keeps walking. “-- Uh...not...really. Just uh...spent some time with...people. Hm.”

Mia was fairly sure she was blushing, and she really hoped he didn’t notice. She wasn’t used to this… whatever it was. “Thank you…”

He did notice. He just didn’t say anything. Didn’t think anything of it. “-- Don’t uh...don’t worry about it. ...You’d do the same.”

“That’s an understatement.” He muttered, biting his lip. “Yeah… Yeah I guess that makes sense. I just wish there was no way for him to find out, that’s all. It’d make things easier.”

...Welp. Guess he had to bring out the Dad. “-- ...Listen...I know this isn’t what you wanna hear, but yeah, you’re right, it’d make things easier for you. It’d also be a constant lie you’re telling to someone you care about. You’d be deliberately keeping things from someone you care about. Worse still, you’d be betraying his trust. You seem like a good kid, don’t fuck that up.”

Monty looked away from the sky offering a smile to the stranger. “Might just do that. Though I am not gonna be too keen on heading out into the wilderness alone. Bad experience.”

Max nodded. He got it. Not personally, but he understood where the kid was coming from. “-- Me and uh...my family go camping out there a bit. Don’t mind a tag-along. Offer’s there.”

Max hesitated at that. Considered it. Regarded the snake he was still petting. “-- Not when they’re about to kill me,” was what he decided on. “-- But uh...other than that...yeah. ...Uh...you?”

What the hell is going on? Clarke wondered, taking a look around the town before entering a crowded coffee shop. At this point, she’d truly believed that she’d seen it all, but alas, reality had taught her otherwise. Truthfully, it was nice to be out of isolation, although she didn’t trust it. Rather than allow her confusion to show, she ordered a drip coffee, and then sat at one of the few open tables. Opening her sketchbook, filled with scenes from the lab, she began drawing the cafe around her – the first sign of life in years. (Maybe this was a blessing?) When someone passed her, she looked up, offering, “You can sit by me, if you want. I’m only drawing, and conversation isn’t all bad.” She paused before adding, “I’m Clarke.”

Max worked here, in this hipster-y café by name of M&G, and was working on wiping down tables when someone talked to him. He looked around. Nope, not talking to anyone else. Uh. Well then. He shook his head. “-- I work here. You uh...can talk, though. While I do...this...” he was working at a particularly stubborn coffee stain. “-- ...Max.”
