WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2019. somewhere DOWNTOWN with @weston-taylor.
One day. All Natalie wanted was one day of relative success in anything she tried. Not a streak of great luck, or even good luck--- just a bit of not so shitty luck. Was that too much to ask for? Rivulets of strawberry milkshake and sticky chocolate fudge fled her fingertips in a race to join their friends, spattered across her notebook. Serves her right for thinking she could balance the cup and her schoolwork all at once. Thoughtlessly, she pushed fallen hair out of her face, then cringed when the mess seeped through the strands.
Great. Just great. You’re really on a roll today, aren’t ya? Resigned to a life of walking disaster, she flung the useless treat into the nearest garbage bin, then fumbled to reclaim her things from the sidewalk. You’d think at that point the universe would decide to give her a break, but no. When she hastily rose, avoiding the stares of anybody nearby, Natalie spun and - impressively - crashed into the pedestrian behind her. Papers went flying. She may or may not have cursed the gods. May or may not have wished for a hole to open up and welcome her home when her eyes lifted to none other than Weston’s face.
He appeared there like a specter. Like life’s twisted idea of a joke. Was that karmic payback for how much she’d lied through her teeth just days ago when, in the midst of random conversation, she claimed she hadn’t been avoiding him all these months? It had to be. Spots of pink met deep red across her cheeks, then joined forces and spread the length of her neck. “Oh.” Oh? Oh?! That’s really all she could think to say? A tiny whine of flustered embarrassment threatened an appearance from the depths of her throat. Would she ever not be in the middle of a new mishap when he crossed her path? “I’m--- I’m sorry about that.” One weak chuckle later, she drew another panicked blank. “I’m--- uhm. Hi.”
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24TH, 2019. at THE BEACH with @niaserrano.
“I can’t believe you actually live on a boat and used to hunt treasure for a living...” Stretched out on a faded green towel, Natalie stared at her with something that might’ve been awe in her eyes. This wasn’t the first time she’d randomly crossed paths with Nia; that’d been a mix up of shopping carts at the grocery store. This was just the first time she’d so much as learned her name, let alone the finer details of her life. One impulsive decision to enjoy a day off led her to the beach, and a coincidentally chosen spot led to recognition. Now, a few leftover, apologetic laughs and half a sandwich later, she couldn’t help but shake her head. “Seriously. I’m thirty and I’ve only ever stepped foot on a boat once.” This past May, to be exact. “How did you even get into something like that?”
DELILAH GREGORY.
“Well, I just don’t see the point Rheyna,” she spoke into the phone pressed against her ear, her blue-green orbs focused on the people in front of her as she walked down the sidewalk. When she started to walk by ‘Bake My Day’ she happened to glance into the store and spotted someone she thought look familiar. “Rheyna, I’ll call you back. Just keep the same grade I put on the paper and tell them if they need to see me about they need to check my office hours.” Quickly hanging up the phone, the brunette walked up behind the person she spotted before tapping on their shoulder. “Fancy seeing you here, needed some kind of sugar rush?”
A light tap on the shoulder tore Natalie out of a daydream and into reality with a startled yelp. Go figure. Eyes wide and brows at her hairline, she turned around with shades of pink already stained across her cheeks. “Sorry, I---” sheepish laughter stuttered from her lips--- “I’m sorry. I guess I got a little too swept up there.” Like almost any other time she had more than three seconds of idle time on her hands. The line for the counter inched forward, but she remained in place. Something about the woman behind her seemed familiar. Nat just couldn’t decipher what. Still studying the distinguishing features of her face, she continued, “A sugar rush and my body weight in caffeine, though? Definitely needed.” Maybe it’d help jog her memory. The more she stared, the more wisps of recognition tugged at her brain. “I’m sorry, but--- do I know you from somewhere?”
SIRENA HALL.
Sirena knew what she was doing when she walked into the bar that night. With the amount of stress she had felt the last few weeks, it was a miracle she hadn’t had a drink until then. She knew that she was breaking sobriety. She couldn’t even be bothered to care about how badly she was slipping with the amount of alcohol running through her system.
She was making music again, and spent the whole day in the recording studio for the first day of recording her new EP; not that anyone knew that yet. She wasn’t ready to tell people. She wanted to keep it to herself until she had done more and was closer to a release. It was a shame though that her first day wasn’t smooth sailing by any means.
The blonde had the good news that she wasn’t pregnant to hold on to, but even that wasn’t enough to keep her from getting this intoxicated. The regret and frustration she felt about the entire situation was more than enough to keep her in a negative head space.
“Ooh hey. Come sit with me,” she said to person who had just come in. She took a sip from her glass and forced a small smile. She was feeling a little better now than she had when she got to the bar. Her words were coming out a little slurred. “I’m sure you’re going to be more interesting than some sport on the screen that I know fuck all about.”
Natalie wasn’t certain her company would amount to anything interesting, but given the alternative? She’d sure as hell appreciate someone to talk to versus blankly watching men throw a ball across the screen. Among the many things on her list of unfamiliar territories, sports ranked somewhere near the top. “Not a huge football fan, I take it?” They were playing football, right? Her eyes edged for the elevated TV to confirm, then landed back on her face. “You’re not alone.” The fact that she had to second guess her own identification just a second ago proved it. Natalie slid into the empty seat, eyeing up the remnants in her glass. “What are you drinking tonight? For solidarity’s sake, the next round’s on me.”
ALISON HARPER.
Allie tried not to laugh out loud as the woman described the scene before but now that she said it, she hadn’t noticed him favoring one side until now so maybe she wasn’t that far off. Still, the idea of him being a Nascar driver delighted her more than she expected.
“Definitely think he’s a beat cop who hates being out but she wanted him to take a moment to be with her, to explore life outside of his office and so it resulted in her pulling him here to try and dance and just forget some things,” she said, shrugging slightly before looking over at the other woman. “I’m Alison,” she said, extending her hand to her.
Amusement sank in a crooked line across Natalie’s mouth. Her eyes skipped from the woman’s - no, Alison’s - face to the couple out on the dance floor to view the exchange in a different light. “You know--- you could be onto something there,” she relented after about twenty seconds of quiet inspection. “He’s so hellbent on making detective he never takes time to let loose, and she’s starved for a night spent anywhere but their couch.”
Were either of them right? Most likely not, but a soft chuckle rolled out of her all the same. “It’s nice to meet you, Alison. I’m Natalie.” Their hands clasped for the requisite shake, then she reclaimed her steadily dwindling bottle of beer. “It’s not every day I go out to the bar and find someone else as into people watching as I am.” It wasn’t every day she got out from behind the bar to even try, either. “Are you that curious about other people’s lives, or are you just that bored tonight?”
IAN HENDERSON.
‘‘I’m pretty sure you’re not, either,’‘ Ian agreed, a chuckle leaving his lips. Maybe he was wrong entirely, but her being nervous and thinking of the little things, such as decoration? It was endearing at the very least. That also carried the connotation of her planning for their future together – as in, she was there to stay. They weren’t just dating, they weren’t just in a relationship. They were already living together, which was a preparation for the rest of their lives. How couldn’t he love every single bit of it, even the ones that left her a little stressed out and nervous? ‘’Like a cactus,’’ He deadpanned, even though everyone knew that taking care of a cactus required no effort whatsoever. ‘’We can even forget it’s there,’’ As soon as he said, however, a fit of laughter escaped him and before she would’ve run off, his hands landed on the sides of her hips to keep her in place, just in case. ‘’If you wanna get a plant, we can get one. But,’’ He smiled. ‘’You think we’d have time for somethin’ a bit more alive? Like a bird?’’ He didn’t want to say dog because dogs were practically like children, as far as taking care of them was concerned. ‘’A fish tank?’’ He then offered, but another fit of laughter bubbled up to the surface. ‘’Just because we do wanna practice for something a bit more… alive, right?’’ He locked his eyes on hers, hoping she’d catch what he meant by it. He wasn’t about to just drop the topic of a baby on her, but he did want to know how she felt about it. ‘’A cooking class sounds great,’’ He nodded not long after. ‘’But you already know my Mom thinks you’re great. They both just need some time, you know?’’ Referring to his parents as he pushed a strand of hair out of her face, Ian mused on it. His parents did think Natalie was cute and funny and pleasant to talk to, but he felt like they didn’t think she would stick. And who could have blamed them? He introduced them to Naomi out of nowhere, his mother held out a hope only to have that crash and burn. And before Naomi, he never actually introduced them to a serious girlfriend. And suddenly, he was living with one– despite them being aware of Natalie’s existence back when he was serving, he now understood they didn’t think she was that serious. In fact… he was pretty sure that they still thought he was secretly dating Greer or something along those lines.
“Maybe something blue or light gray---” She murmured in that distracted way of hers, eyes blindly scanning from couch to walls. Natalie didn’t have any experience with color theory, either, but the palette hinted at peaceful. Calming. Everything she found in Ian and needed to keep her head from exploding during the day to day. Natalie jolted back from her wandering imagination - from the fledgling idea of bringing the beach and the ocean waves indoors - when he mentioned something about a cactus.
“God, you have that little faith in me, huh?” Her palm swatted Ian’s chest. "I’ll have you know it’s been a year since Cerbie accidentally came into my life---” although it wasn’t much of an accident when she stole him--- “and he’s still kickin’.” The dog shared her trait of scrounging for scraps when life (re: Natalie) failed to supply. He was also probably waiting for her to pick him up from Bexley’s now that she’d officially settled in.
Her body pivoted on his lap. Pressed back to chest, draped arm over stomach. Then, when she was good and comfortable, Natalie helped herself to the second half of Ian’s sandwich. Out loud, she mused, “What’s more alive than that?” Her brain didn’t automatically operate in a maternal direction, so it took a moment for the pieces to fall into place. A wedge of sourdough and roast beef lodged in her throat. “Do you---” coughing, she slammed a fist to her chest, just once--- “do you mean like... kids?”
The idea of growing a family probably should’ve been expected, but it threw her for a loop. Even if Ian wasn’t thinking about it, now Natalie was. Being a mother. Teaching someone how to succeed and thrive. She went still, save for a finger that flicked a piece of fallen lettuce off her thigh. “Shouldn’t we--- I mean--- we should probably be sure your family even wants me in it before we go addin’ my hopeless mess genes to the bloodline, right?” It took a few seconds before her eyes eventually gravitated to his face. Searching. Unsure. Was she way off base right now? Or had seeing Mike and Naomi take that leap inspired a similar urge inside of Ian? Without knowing, she proceeded gently and with caution. “We just--- it’s not something we’ve talked about in a really long time.” Not since they were younger and untainted by the stain of all her bad decisions.
Do you want children?
“I— well. I’m not sure. Maybe some day? I like kids, don’t get me wrong, but— I don’t know if I’m really the best person to become a mother. I didn’t really have— I just— I don’t know. I think maybe I want to want to have kids, but there’s still so much about the idea that terrifies me. I don’t wanna screw anybody up, and I just— I don’t know. Usually when someone has a baby, everybody’s always all ‘wow, they’re so lucky to have you as a mom’ and— I’m not sure that’d be the case for me.”
HONESTY HOUR.
Right now, in this moment, are you happy?
“When I look back on my life there are only a handful of moments that I can think of that I’d call happy, or at least close to it, and— how I feel now doesn’t even begin to compare. So, yeah. I actually really am. I feel safe and loved and hopeful— what part of that wouldn’t I feel happy about?”
HONESTY HOUR.
The thing I’m most afraid of is me. Of not knowing what I’m going to do. Of not knowing what I’m doing right now.

ALISON HARPER.
where: pravada night club when: midnight who: open/ @wilmingtonstarters
Allie sat in the booth, observing those dancing before her. She wasn’t the biggest dancer normally and the idea of dancing at Pravada was not high on her list of things to do. To be fair, the idea of dancing was never up there either. Instead, she’d rather just people watch and see how others reacted to being out and about late at night.
“What do you think their deal is?” she asked, watching the couple before her. Chances were that they got drunk and started to dance on the nearest body to them but a part of her wished these kinds of things interested her. The idea of going out to a club rather than staying in was just not on her radar. But then again, here she sat questioning everything about her decisions, apparently.
A flicker of surprise shot through Natalie’s gaze when the other woman engaged her in conversation, but only for a moment. Her brain already took the question and ran wild. “I think---” eyes bouncing from the brunette to the couple on the dance floor, she studied them another moment and then smiled--- “I think he’s a retired Nascar driver, probably cut short by an injury, and she’s never seen anything outside her hometown.” The man locked in her sights favored one leg, but flailed with such enthusiasm she figured he rarely slowed down. The girl, on the other hand, seemed more concerned with diverting his attention back her way - almost desperately.
Her guesses were silly, but Nat knew something about that all consuming need to be anywhere else. “He probably made some kinda comment about big city lights, naturally leaving out the part about working at a gas station now, and she saw her ticket west.” The edge of her mouth sank another fraction of an inch. “Your turn. What do you think?”
OLIVER FLYNN.
RIVERFRONT MARKET l OLIVER & OPEN
It had been exactly two months now that Oliver had been temporarily living in Wilmington, the possibility of extending his contract with the festival already a thought that had seeped its way into his thoughts. He would never admit it outloud, but the Irishman had come to Wilmington with a purpose that was highly unlikely to play itself out, but a purpose nonetheless. That didn’t mean that he had paid any mind to it so far, using his time in town to explore what the place had to offer since the last time he had been around. Despite the ground that he still had to cover, he once again found himself back at the Riverfront Market. He loved everything about the space, working as a warm reminder of both Waterton and New York. Lifting up a watermelon, he turned to the closest person he could find. “I’ll buy you this watermelon if you can explain to me how knocking on these things isn’t just some bullshit way to tell a customer that the melon they’ve picked up is ripe.” An amused grin took to his lips as he lifted the melon to his ear with one hand, knocking it and producing a hollow sound with the other. “I worked at a shop like this in high school and used it all the time.” Lowering the fruit back into the bin it came from, he lifted his gaze to the other shopper. “I try and steer clear of these things just for that…not much worse than cracking one of these babies open and having it disappoint.”
@wilmingtonstarters
Bell peppers, garlic, tomatoes, yellow onion--- Natalie scanned her list for the second (no, make that the fourth) time and grimaced. Why the hell did she think she could pull off this kind of meal from scratch when she couldn’t even safely boil water? The number of ingredients alone overwhelmed her, and shopping was meant to be the easy part. Nightmarish visions of the stove erupted in flames, or Ian’s mother keeling over from undercooked meat, nearly made her bolt for the exit. Nearly. She’d felt the urge creep up from her toes to her knees, just begging for her to give up and call it a loss, when - to the left - someone spoke out. “I’m sorry, wha---” Torn between her lifelong instinct to abandon projects before she could deem them a fail and his amicable musings, she wavered in place. Her eyes lowered from the warm smile spread across his lips to the watermelon in hand. “Oh.” A soft, featherlight chuckle breezed from the seam of her mouth. “I uhm--- I honestly don’t think I knew that. I don’t think---” Now, when she shuffled in that one spot, her shoulders slumped, bashful as ever. “I don’t think I’ve ever bought a watermelon, myself, to be honest.” She’d happily devoured the sticky sweet wedges at her best friend Sebastian’s house - he never could agree with her opinion that gummy bears counted as a serving of fruit - but that was about it. “I’d be the right person to sell the lie to, though, that’s for sure.” Again, her mouth curved with a sheepish tilt. “I don’t know anything about picking out produce. If it’s not fuzzy or strange colors, I’d assume it’s fine.”
SCARLETT MONTGOMERY.
“Oh my fucking god,” Laughing while shaking her head at the same time, the joke just said by Natalie made Scarlett love her even more than before. She was a fan of jokes, that was obvious, but she was a huge fan of bad and dad jokes. This joke was just bad and she loved it. She was also the kind of person to laugh at everything, but this joke made her laugh hard and leave a wide, amused smile on her face. “That was brilliant. You need to get your comedic ass to a talent show before I drag you there myself.” Teasing her coworker and friend easily, she followed her lead and took a sip of her hidden water glass. “I’ll bring you out to the next festival I lay my eyes on. I pinky promise.” She stated before holding her pinky out toward hers. “Sorry to hear about your busy schedule. Why did you add on another class to your list?”
Brilliant? Natalie’s eyebrows reached record breaking heights. “You think way too highly of my skills, Scar.” It warmed her from the inside out to imagine anybody assumed she had enough talent to go main stage, though. Even if, as she suspected, they were merely joking, themselves. Fingers tapped a beat against her glass while she fixed her friend with a final ‘are you kidding me?’ stare, then she finished off its contents. “I’m gonna hold you to that,” she warned with a steadily growing smile. If there was one thing she could count on when it came to Scarlett, it was making sure she didn’t fall into a blackhole of solitude and never climb her way out. Waiting for her refill, Natalie gently tucked a loose wisp of hair behind her ear. “I did it to myself, so not much reason to be sorry.” When it came time to schedule her new semester, she thought it’d be fine. How wrong she’d been on that one, huh? “Back when I was still working at the pharmacy, I couldn’t go more than part-time. I thought an extra class would help me catch up.” She just didn’t anticipate the amount of time she’d later devote each night to reading textbooks and pouring over essays. Coupled with the fact that she hadn’t truly been in school for a decade? “I might’ve bit of more than I can chew, to be honest. I’m just--- I don’t wanna disappoint people by dropping it now.”
Does Weston know you got back with Ian or is that just a distant memory?
“I haven’t talked to Wes in months. Most of this year, really. If he knows we got back together? No, it didn’t come from me. But I mean— I wouldn’t say that’s because he’s a distant memory? Not at all. It’s just— I mean— he made it pretty obvious he needed space from me, you know? It’s why things— yeah. I guess I just wasn’t his right fit. And I don’t— I don’t really think I cross his mind enough for him to really care what I’ve been up to. Definitely not enough to sit around waiting for me to reach out just to tell him that after so much silence. He’s— I mean— from what I heard he started seeing someone else, anyways, right? Wes came into my life when I needed him the most and I’ll always appreciate what we had together, but I don’t— it’s not— I have to believe there’s a reason he decided to pull away. I’ve just tried to respect that.”
